I am hopeful that this buffoon's gaffes and ignorance will be made available for the great American public. His stupidity highlights the intelligence of Obama.
He couldn't even remember the name of the leader of the Opposition, calling him 'Mr. Leader'.

Greatnan Thu 30-Aug-12 08:11:53

At least the rednecks won't confuse him with Osama Bin Laden.

Joan Thu 30-Aug-12 08:02:40

His full name is Willard Mitt Romney (born March 12, 1947). I'm not sure Willie would have been better!! More fun though. Apparently the Mitt is after a family friend called Milton but known as Mitt.

I guess The former VP candidate Palin had some peculiar names in her family too. Why would you call someone Trig for instance? Or Track, Tripp or Bristol? I'm not keen on Todd (husband) either, as in Yorkshire 'tod' means sheep or rabbit poo. Not to mention what Bristol means in certain quarters.

I know the Americans specialise in odd names but does 'Mitt' really go with the title 'President'?

Greatnan Wed 29-Aug-12 20:34:55

She reminded me of Cherie eulogising Tony.

That should read the 1993 election! Slip of the keyboard. In 1963 the Sun was still the Daily Herald!!

annodomini Wed 29-Aug-12 20:30:58

Joan, I wish I shared your optimism. There is a lot of hate being poured out on Obama. Never overestimate the intelligence of the electorate - and I don't just mean the American electorate. And don't underestimate the influence of certain parts of the media. The 1963 election here (^It's the Sun wot won it!^) was a deeply disillusioning experience for many of us. I had managed to fall asleep last night with the radio on and was woken up by Ann Romney's panegyric to Mitt. Eugh!

He looks like the male equivalent of a Stepford Wife. Of course this does not explain his wife.

absentgrana Wed 29-Aug-12 14:00:34

soop Oh no, this is terrible [waves arms up and down].

Greatnan Wed 29-Aug-12 13:57:39

Nice observation, Soop!

soop Wed 29-Aug-12 13:12:43

Greatnan grin...or the puppet characters from 'Thunderbirds'

Greatnan Wed 29-Aug-12 12:45:25

Didn't you think many of the men looked like Burton's dummies - so smooth and smug?

Joan Wed 29-Aug-12 12:04:01

I wonder what odds the bookies are giving? I'd probably give 5 to 1 in favour of Obama.

Anyway, Obama achieved little because everything got blocked, as a matter of principle, by the republicans. I used to think GOP meant God's Own Party by the way!!! But now I realise that both sides reckon God is on their side.

I cannot imagine why any woman or any non-white person would vote for Romney, but of course many will. I find something frightening when I look at his face, as if he's the scary creature in a horror film. I can't put my finger on why.

Oh, I just watched Ann Romney's speech at their conference. Aaaarrrgghhh - I nearly threw up. So sickly sweet and so deeply boring. I looked at the audience and many were just quietly slumped in their seats and clearly as bored as i was. Of course, the requisite cheering happened, but not everyone joined in - probably because they were quietly and discretely asleep.

While I will vote for Obama again and believe that he is a leader of integrity and intelligence, I gasp at the level of US debt ($18 trillion!) incurred under his administration. Admittedly, he inherited a diabolical financial mess for which we have only George W. Bush to thank, but I believe Obama lacked both the political and business experience that would have enabled him to do better. I have to believe that he has learned lessons and - with nothing to lose in a second term - will make the hard decisons the US economy requires.

Romney may be the better businessman, but his record as a flip-flopper means no one can trust what he says. Because he has been perceived as "too liberal" (not to mention "too weird") for his Republican base, he's reversed his views on abortion, healthcare, climate change, tax cuts, gun control, etc. We've recently witnessed his stupidity abroad. Nothing about the man is reassuring.

The sad fact is that the election will be decided on the economy, which does not work in Obama's favour, at least not at the moment. And the Republicans will swallow their reservations about Mitt and vote for him because he is NOT Obama. It's going to be close!

I did enjoy it, Anno, many thanks!

Here's an interesting analysis of the Ryan 'plan': news.coffeepartyusa.com/p/2462707581/an-unserious-man

Yes, I also grew up with socialist parents who had suffered hardship during their youth (born 1908 and 1910)

As a snotty 12 year old grammar school girl I decided to oppose their politics and be a Tory. However, I knew in a family like mine I could not state a political view without being able to defend it. So I did my research - and ended up further left than them! My Tory history had lasted about a week.

So I watch American politics, especially the Republicans, in growing disbelief.

Greatnan Wed 22-Aug-12 12:21:57

Yes, it is significant that both the Chinese and Russian extremists picked on intellectuals, teacher, doctors, lecturers and burnt books. Knowledge is power. I was always a socialist, my parents having suffered during the 1930's. My father called Churchill 'a baby-starving rich bar-steward'. Of course when I grew up I began to study, read and think for myself, but I remained convinced that my parents were correct.

Annobel Wed 22-Aug-12 12:21:11

Unfortunately it's not just the old men. There was a young-ish woman defending Republican attitudes on Newsnight last night, though there was another Republican woman supporting choice - I think, though I must admit I was dozing off at the time.

Joan Wed 22-Aug-12 11:37:08

They are unbelievable, those Republican old men, aren't they? Thick as bricks.
Mind you, some Republicans hate tertiary education because higher education can turn people to the political Left!!!

Nonu Wed 22-Aug-12 09:54:35

Still think it a peurile remark sad

Greatnan Tue 21-Aug-12 23:02:47

Another Republican candidate has put his foot in it, talking about 'legitimate rape' and saying women's bodies could 'shut down' to prevent it ending in pregnancy. I don't think Obama needs to do anything - the religious right wingers are finally frightening women.

Joan Tue 21-Aug-12 22:35:20

Oh honestly - we all should have a good sense of humour; after all, we've all had sex and if that isn't the most hilarious thing when you think about it, I don't know what is!

(And the fact we end up on the labour bed is God's joke on womankind)

Nonu Tue 21-Aug-12 17:32:52

One never know"s does one ?

Greatnan Tue 21-Aug-12 17:28:27

Well, we all have different senses of humour, don't we? I try to post a joke every day on 'This made me laugh' - perhaps some of them would amuse you?
