Adults over 18 would have to 'opt-in'

I think adults can usually make their own minds up.

Re TV watershed /storylines I do think things have got lax and adult issues are now on the screen before 9:00p.m. I know parents are responsible for their children and should be managing them & their viewing but too often that does not happen... often for already vulnerable youngsters.
I think if 'society' at least promoted a more considered attitude towards children and what they can legitimately view before 9:00 p.m then an expectation is set. I am not promoting TV censorship for adults.

I agree. It's much better now that we can discuss things.

petallus Tue 04-Sept-12 16:14:50

Oh, I was thinking of adults looking at porn/erotica, not children.

Young children shouldn't see it of course.

I wouldn't like to see sexual matters going underground and unmentioned again as they were when I was a child.

petallus Tue 04-Sept-12 16:13:16

Censorship; a tricky area.

I remember Mary Whitehouse.

I've unfortunately seen children damaged by pornography....some worse than others.

One little boy sneaked a peek his dad's SKY porn channel and was so horrified by what he saw he came to me for a bit of one to one TLC at school. He said he couldn't tell me what he'd seen because it would upset me too much to think that people do that but he did manage to say that the ladies had their 'top bits' exposed. I ended up asking his dad to have a man to man chat with him about it.

The worst damaged I knew were three brothers who were exposed to hardcore porn films and photos from an early age. Their attitude to young women was appalling. They couldn't tell the difference between a girl simply being friendly and a girl giving them the come on. Also they genuinely believed that no didn't mean no in sexual circumstances.

Children need to understand about relationships before they're introduced to sex in any form. This means they shouldn't see pornography but also we need to change the storylines in soaps and reintroduce a watershed.

Whatever people define as pornography/erotica it is not healthy for youngsters to be exposed to it before they are mature enough to understand that pornography /erotica is about power and control and not about an intimate sexual relationship. Images in pornographic/erotic material mostly objectify humans as purely sexual beings. I am no prude but I do not want children to see even soft porn in newsagents /p3 of papers etc because they are not able to understand it. Those who think it harmless obviously have not met children damaged by it and are rather naive. Adults can make their own choices.

I would sign a legitimate petition to make access to porn/erotica very difficult for those under 18 but like others are wary of my signature being used for some propaganda by religious groups!

It has been said that people are seldom so innocently employed as when they are using erotica (don't like the term 'pornography' as it is a completely pejorative one). I fail to see what is so dreadful about it.

And when will some Christians keep their noses out of other people's private business?

Ella46 Tue 04-Sept-12 11:19:00

BUMP.

petallus Sun 02-Sept-12 09:59:53

I broadly agree with you vampirequeen. If only all pornography was of the type you describe though.

Incidentally, only one poster thought liking/watching porn was abnormal.

It's obvious that it's normal in the sense that (probably) more than fiftypercent of people watch it/don't mind it.

vampirequeen Sun 02-Sept-12 09:15:09

I have nothing against pornography as long as it's well made by consenting adults. It's one of the few industries where the women get paid more than the men. A lot of the women are very well educated and articulate. They're not victims of the industry. There are also women producers and directors.

Children shouldn't see it but then neither should they be exposed to the language and story lines they see in soaps or topless models in some newspapers.

Oh dear under the criteria on this thread I'm not normal.

Have signed it ,agree with petition and trusted when ....she knows these thingsxx

Nonu Sat 01-Sept-12 19:25:39

Enough already , I think you did . My boredom thresh hold is very low . I am now bored big time

petallus Sat 01-Sept-12 19:20:40

I understood you to say that NO normal human being is for pornography, meaning that anyone who looks at porno is not normal.

I think about 70 percent of men have looked at porno, probably less women?

So that's a lot of people who you think are abnormal.

My mind was boggling at the thought of all those people being abnormal.

How was my post not clear?

I don't think I can elucidate further.

I might have misunderstood your post of course.smile

Nonu Sat 01-Sept-12 18:59:03

Excuse me where did men and women come into this , you surely knew I meant everyone should find porography reprehensible . U still haven"t told me why your mind is boggled . sweetgrin

petallus Sat 01-Sept-12 18:53:22

Your comment seems to suggest that (I'm guessing) at least seventy percent of men are not normal, and probably a smaller percentage of women.

Of course, depends on how you define pornography.

Hard porn is one thing, Fifty Shades of Grey is another.

Ohu why are (most) human beings so fallible?

Nonu Sat 01-Sept-12 18:47:25

The mind boggles at what ?

petallus Sat 01-Sept-12 18:46:46

Thanks Nonu. All is now clear.

The mind boggles!

Nonu Sat 01-Sept-12 18:16:31

What I meant , is that NO normal human being is for pornography , it"s impossible , because it is a reprehensible thing . I perhaps didn"t totally make myself clear , hope I have now .

petallus Sat 01-Sept-12 18:12:00

Thanks for the info when and ella

Just didn't want to fall into the hands of the far Christian right smile

Although I did notice that out of four things Safetynet tell me I should do to stop children seeing pornography, the fourth one is 'pray'.

Will go off and sign something or other.

Nonu what was that about normal decent human beings? Do you mean are they for pornography for children or for pornography per se?

Ella46 Sat 01-Sept-12 18:02:20

Phew!! grin

whenim64 Sat 01-Sept-12 17:57:58

Safetynet is a reputable organisation for child protection, but if you prefer another epetition for the same campaign, here's another high profile one with exactly the same aim. There is a FAQ pdf on Safetynet's petition website, which should give reassurance.
