Do you believe the allegations that he groomed underage girls for sex and if so, do you hold accountable those in the media/BBC et al who heard rumours, had suspicions, saw evidence etc., but said nothing (probably to protect their careers)?

Personally, I always thought he was weird - even going back as far as schooldays when he was an up and coming DJ. I wouldn't have been at all surprised if all this had come out years ago and maybe it should.

But JS is still a rotten b*****d and so are all the others who've taken advantage of those unable to object.

My daughter has said today that she and her friends have been discussing this JS story, and they now understand why women were so forceful about feminism in the 60s and 70s. She couldn't imagine having the burden of men assuming they could touch women without their consent. Blimey - looks like some pennies may be dropping with this generation of young women who regard feminism as irrelevant. Maybe something positive will come out of us learning about what has been disclosed.

Hear hear when! I've spent a lot of time explaining to younger women this weekend, just what it was like then. I think they were very shocked at how badly women were treated.
I also told my son and daughter about my own experiences.
That felt strange too after all these years.

Whenim64 that is a good point and I hope you are right.

The police say they are now investigating two claims of rape and six more allegations of sexual abuse against JS. They are now following up 120 leads concerning over 25 victims.

I am puzzled by the apparent contradiction in Esther Rantzen's attitude. On the one hand, when she founded Childline she insisted that children must be heard and believed. Now she says that there was no evidence, only rumour, so she did nothing.

JessM Tue 09-Oct-12 16:40:59

Did she "get" child abuse rather later in the day than the times she heard rumours about JS perhaps?

JessM Tue 09-Oct-12 17:07:00

The met have admitted he was a predatory sex offender! 20-30 victims

merlotgran Tue 09-Oct-12 17:40:58

I'm puzzled as well, Greatnan. Very hyprocitical especially as she was married to Desmond Wilcox who was a big cheese at the BBC at the time. I bet the two of them discussed the rumours. They both had high profile jobs.

I think there's also a typo in it, but I may be wrong.

whitewave Tue 09-Oct-12 18:18:44

when that is exactly what I was saying to my DH today when discussing the situation. Pre-feminist era was so different I think people would be appalled if they went back and experienced it.

Ana Tue 09-Oct-12 18:20:56

Telegraph article

Don't know what went wrong with your link. phoenix! confused

Anne58 Tue 09-Oct-12 18:27:01

Neither do I! Thanks Ana !

merlotgran Tue 09-Oct-12 18:27:34

His epitaph reads, 'It was good while it lasted.' hmm

And apparently his body was entombed in concrete to stop graverobbers.....hmm

Greatnan Tue 09-Oct-12 18:47:23

I find Freddie Starr unconvincing. What on earth does a 34-year old fiancee see in him (apart from the obvious). He is another that has always made me shudder.

crimson Tue 09-Oct-12 18:51:50

I read about the concrete recently and wondered about that. Seemed a strange thing to do. Did he foresee these allegations coming to light perhaps?

annodomini Tue 09-Oct-12 19:42:10

There must have been some pretty sturdy pallbearers available for his funeral!

I'm wondering why no-one has mentioned the Louis Theroux programme made about J S some years ago. Louis would spend a weekend or so with his subjects - most memorable Neil & Christine Hamilton; Ann Widdecombe and for me, the one about Jimmy Savile because I always found him creepy and this programme confirmed it. Finding him creepy made me feel quite bad when I thought about all his charity work. Now his motivation for that is being revealed. He came across as fearful, guarded and uptight. Louis picked up on his penchant for keeping his mother's clothes and JS boasted about only needing one pair of underpants because he washed them out every night in his shower. Yuk.

Marelli Tue 09-Oct-12 20:52:13

I remember that programme, specki4eyes. Savile came over as very arrogant.

whenim64 Tue 09-Oct-12 21:32:22

Louis Theroux was mentioned in this post last week, specki

I was listening to Jeremy Vine today on my way to a poultry auction and heard somebody say that Jimmy Savile should not be posthumously stripped of his knighthood because it was awarded for services to charity and he did a great deal of fund raising for various charities. TRUE....but if that's the case, Lester Piggot did not get his knighthood for services to the Inland Revenue but for services to the racing industry. SO.... given that he served time for the offence....why can't he have it back? hmm

Anne58 Wed 10-Oct-12 19:56:43

Good point, well made merlot and at the risk of wrath, I think that what JS is alledged to have done, it is a far greater crime than LP. Yes, I realise that evasion of tax in a way affects us all, but abuse of the young is (imo) far worse.

I heard on the news today that a building that was named the "Savile Centre" (or something like that) was to be renamed.

I just wish that all this had come out before the horrible man died, and that he had been charged and made to stand trial.
