Disgraceful rejection of women bishops. If we have to have bishops in the House of Lords at least let some of them be women!

Nanadog Tue 20-Nov-12 23:17:45

You have a TV in the shower anno?

Joking aside I too wanted to throttle her. It wasn't just her inane remarks but the smug and beatific expression on her face that made me angry

Love your SBABWP phoenix grin

annodomini Tue 20-Nov-12 23:23:02

grin nanad, radio 4 on in bathroom while performing morning ablutions.

Anne58 Tue 20-Nov-12 23:26:41

Thank you Nanadog luckily I didn't see the stupid cow who has probably set progress back by decades lady mentioned, but I stand by my stand (!) on this, why should the damn church be exempt from laws just because it's always been that way!

DOUBLE SHIT BUGGER ARSEHOLE ETC, PLUS OTHER WORDS

Nanadog Tue 20-Nov-12 23:34:18

anno of course, that makes sense.
phoenix I have over the course of the last three months since I joined GN appreciated your posts and your way with wirds. Never more though that just now.

I'm off to sleep with a smile inside. grin moon

Nanadog Tue 20-Nov-12 23:35:54

WIRDS = WORDS ...said with a spouse accent ( only I'm not..a Mickey Mouser that is)

Ana Tue 20-Nov-12 23:42:52

A spouse accent! grin That's a new one....

Anne58 Tue 20-Nov-12 23:44:55

Spouse accent, love it! [grin}

Nanadog Tue 20-Nov-12 23:46:24

Time I went to sleep !!! Night all moon

JessM Wed 21-Nov-12 05:29:27

So this is what it takes to break the self-imposed ban on naughty words in GN! grin

Bags Wed 21-Nov-12 06:03:30

Comment in the Guardian reckons the CofE has just committed suicide. What a bunch of prejudiced nitwits it is, that synod thing. Pompous twits.

Mamie Wed 21-Nov-12 06:12:24

At least we all get a chance to practise spelling disestablishmentarianism... smile

Joan Wed 21-Nov-12 06:37:08

Oh dear - what utter dinosaurs! When I first read about the lost vote, i assumed it was blokes voting against it, men who imagined their balls would drop off if women got the power they deserve. But women!! They are the uncle, I mean auntie Toms of the gender battle. Whimps!

JessM Wed 21-Nov-12 06:57:58

I guess the dinosaur brigade have been politicking away, getting themselves seats on synod, while the sane majority have not.
Twenty years of ordaining women priests and the sky does not appear to have fallen - but none of them can become bishops. I remember Anne Widdecome (sp?) (who on earth is that woman!!!) being interviewed and saying she was going to leave the Anglican church over it.
I reckon amend the religious category exemption from the sex discrimination act and let em sue! But can you imagine the ruffled feathers that would cause in other forms of religions (nearly all of them sexist to the core) so no government would do that.

Ariadne Wed 21-Nov-12 07:00:11

I cannot believe it! You have all
said exactly what I think, and Phoenix you are so right; it wouldn't be allowed anywhere else. How CAN other women be so spectacularly stupid?

Very very very bad words! angry

Nelliemoser Wed 21-Nov-12 07:22:00

I wonder if a lot of this opposition has come from the militant tendency evangelical wing of the C of E. They are the ones that seem to be into submiting to husbands, anti gay etc etc.

phoenix grin grin

Wheniwasyourage Wed 21-Nov-12 07:28:12

As a member of the C of S (no bishops, women ministers but only one female Moderator so far - ridiculous) I feel so sorry for the women C of E priests who have been thwarted again, particularly when the clergy have gone for it this time. It was sad to see so many in tears again sad - how much more rejection do they have to put up with? flowers and [hugs] for any GNer who is a priest or close to one.

JessM Wed 21-Nov-12 07:50:18

Hear hear. Even if they have no interest in the job, it is a poke in the eye for the contribution they are making.

absentgrana Wed 21-Nov-12 08:35:34

Clergy AND Bishops in favour, laity against, especially female laity. I blame St Paul of Extreme Misogyny.

Good words phoenix – just a bit more extreme than pee, po, belly, bum, drawers of Flanders and Swann fame.

As an atheist I couldn't give a fig what the Church of England does with its inner workings, but as a woman I am indignant.

annodomini Wed 21-Nov-12 09:04:26

Even in the House of Laity, where they needed a 2/3 majority, the pro-side only lost by six votes. And over the Synod as a whole, the majority was 74%.

absentgrana Wed 21-Nov-12 09:09:16

Compare and contrast with the election of Police Commissioners…

Riverwalk Wed 21-Nov-12 09:19:07

Like absent I also don't give a fig about the inner workings of the C of E, but I'm indignant that we'll have to hear about it for the next 10 years!

Anne58 Wed 21-Nov-12 13:09:11

Rowan Williams was NOT impressed, by the sound of it.

merlotgran Wed 21-Nov-12 13:49:08

I caught a bit on Jeremy Vine where some daft old bat said she thought women lack the necessary leadership qualities (or words to that effect).

Unless I'm mistaken, isn't the head of the Church of England a woman? hmm

Mishap Wed 21-Nov-12 13:53:57

Well the chap in the Guardian seems to have got it about right.

These dinosaurs have an automatic right to sit in our legislature even though this ruling is (in any other walk of life) illegal. I am sure that the calls to get rid of bishops in the H of L will become more strident now - hooray say I!

What a kick in the teeth for those women clergy who have proved themselves in the area of pastoral care. I am agnostic, but still feel angry on their behalf.

It is really quite scary that the fundamentalist/evangelical wing is allowed to wield such power.

AlieOxon Wed 21-Nov-12 14:44:36

Good T-shirt shown for several seconds on the BBC News just now - said something like
"Christ was an equal opportunities employer - Pity about the Church"
