Granny23 It's heartening that Scotland's organised an event re: opposing Trident. It's a bit out of my commuting distance, or else I'd go. I suspect London CND will be getting this going down this end of the country again soon

On behalf of Scottish CND and Abolition 2000 we would like to extend an invitation to you to attend the Abolition 200 Annual General Meeting held in Edinburgh, between the 17th – 18th of April 2013.

Abolition 2000 is a network of over 2000 organisations in 90 countries who are working to achieve nuclear disarmament. This event will be a great opportunity for Scottish activists to meet and share experiences with international experts on nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament.

There will be an optional trip to Faslane on 19th of April. There might be a small fee associated with the trip, not more than £7.

The Abolition 2000 Closing Event will be on Thursday 18th of April, 6pm, at the Scottish Parliament.

Hundreds of people will take part in a blockade of the Faslane Trident base. There will also be a supporting demonstration for those who do not want to risk arrest. Do you really think our getting rid of Trident would stop N Korea and Iran developing nuclear weapons?

It was a great mistake to allow Israel to have nuclear weapons - no wonder its neighbours feel threatened.

We do need Trident. Pyongyang is likely to be north Korea's leader for a long time. At thirty he's not a baby. He's unlikely to change. China is reluctant to intervene. The US could be at risk in the future, and we would probably get drawn into yet another war. We have to afford Trident.

CND have been warning about proliferation from the very start- and were scorned and laughed at by the great majority in the UK. They were totally right of course - why would any other nation in the world accept that the UK and US are so superior that we are 'entitled to be trusted with nuclear weapons' and have the right to stop others from having them? The arrogance and stupidity is beyond the beyond The current situation with North Korea is really worrying.

We are a group of little islands with delusions of grandeur. We can't afford Trident, and we don't need it to deal with a 20 something kid in North Korea - he will get flattened from a great height without any intervention from David Cameron.

I should have thought that the top areas of risk for the UK in terms of external attack are terrorism and cyber crime. Neither of these can be countered with nuclear weapons. In spite of David Cameron's extraordinarily illogical statement that we need to replace Trident in the light of North Korea's threat – which was to South Korea and the USA, not the UK – even the Government does not regard an attack by any nation state as even a medium-level risk. I agree that the desire to possess these weapons is to ensure that Brit politicians still have a seat at the top table in spite of the Uk's being a third- or fourth-rate power and interest in the arms industry, as you say Greatnan.
