It seems that the day of the Royal babies christening will be a national holiday of compulsory celebration, with mandatory bunting and Union Flags.

The news sites are already predicting that some unscrupulous traders will take advantage and bunting costs will go through the roof.

Downright profiteering if you ask me.

Since the Scottish monarchy took over the English monarchy 410 years ago, surely they have more right to be called monarchs of Scotland. grin

I always obey the prime minister to the letter!

One of my old students put a caption on FB today which did make me laugh heartily, and reminded me of a previous GN thread:

'I thought the Government was not keen on people having babies and expecting State hand-outs' lol

Wisewoman Oh I do hope so grin

Seriously tho' Monarchs are technically King/Queen of England and also King/Queen of SCOTS. A subtle but important difference as English Monarchs rule by right of birth whereas Scottish Monarchs rule only hold the Crown with the consent of the people. In England the King/Queen is Sovereign - in Scotland, Sovereignty lies with the people.

There is no such person as the King/Queen of Great Britain. UK is shorthand for the United KingdomS of Scotland and England - 2 Kingdoms currently sharing the same Queen.

Another benefit claimant has been forced on us and D.C. wants a day of celebration??? .If I hear of a future king of England being born again I shall be sick.As a Scot living in a large English community I get fed up with English people telling me that I'm English even when I tell them I'm not!!A friend of mine who is Welsh was asked by an Englishman "you're English aren't you?"when he said "no I'm Welsh"the reply was" same thing" (angry)

Deeda Should Prince Newborn ever come to the throne, he still won't be head of the Church of England. The monarch is not the head of the Church of England.

Ariadne Tue 23-Jul-13 21:48:04

But the monarch is the Governor of the CofE? I understand that the Archbishop of Canterbury is the Primate etc. not being snippy, just enquiring. Honest!

gracesmum Tue 23-Jul-13 21:56:00

No, the Queen as Supreme Governor, is Head of the Church of England - a position that all British monarchs have held since it (the C of E) was founded by Henry VIII .

Nonu Tue 23-Jul-13 22:02:50

So you were right Ariadne !! wink

annodomini Tue 23-Jul-13 22:10:03

Initially, Henry VIII called himself the Head of the Church IN England. That is, the Church was supposed to remain Catholic, but not under the leadership of the Pope. So Henry made the rules. I don't know when this arrangement morphed into the Church OF England.
