To answer my own question - yes, I believe it is because it is intended to denigrate Jews.

I accept your point entirely.

The first time I used the word Yiddish I was referring to the fact they were proud to be Yiddish in the spoken word. Perhaps the dictionary explains it better. Yiddishism 'The advocacy of promotion of Yiddish language and literature'.

I agree reading my post back I did use the word Yiddish incorrectly, hopefully most other GN's realized what I meant.

An interesting post Sussexpoet, but as someone who is half French, I take exception to your penultimate sentence.

My Jewish father must be turning in his grave. He, alongside many men, Jewish or otherwise, fought Moseley's blackshirts in the East End when the term Yid was endemic. The term has always been derogatory.

I don't know any other Jewish person who calls themselves Yid even in jest although if speaking Yiddish (a dying out language from our grandparents generation) then yes, it will be used.

If Tottenham supporters are proud to be Jewish or wish to support their Jewish fans then they should call themselves the Jewish army.

It is used derogatorily by some Jewish parents when their son is dating or marries a gentile girl.
