...while this is going on

Penstemmon Fri 20-Sept-13 18:49:58

I think you have a point J08

Focus on vox popularis 'anti burka' stories in the press...it links with other anti-islamic stories and helps to spread the attitude that Muslims are somehow less human than 'us'. Just what Nazis did to the Jews /Gypsies etc before WW2.

Once we have dehumanised Muslims by lumping them altogether as a homgenous whole and not individual people we can feel less concerned about their countries /communities.

Atqui Fri 20-Sept-13 18:51:04

But this is 'grans' net. Anyway, sorry, don't want to detract from the issue which is of course horrendous.
I agree with you Lona.

KatGransnet (GNHQ) Fri 20-Sept-13 18:52:41

Hello. This thread has been reported a few times so we thought we'd post.

Some like to swear, and some people detest it. There isn't really a right or a wrong - we're all grown-ups I hope <looks over shoulder> grin. As it isn't actually against our forum guidelines, we'll leave the thread title how it is.

Greatnan Fri 20-Sept-13 18:55:24

The swearing doesn't bother me, although I don't do it myself on line, but I don't think one area of concern means we don't care about another. Concern , like love, is not rationed.

J52 Fri 20-Sept-13 19:24:24

I wonder what would happen if a doctor, police officer or a teacher swore at their clients??

betsysgran Fri 20-Sept-13 19:35:31

J52 I totally agree. Would any GNs use it in any context in front of their GCs?

Riverwalk Fri 20-Sept-13 19:41:32

Probably not betsygran but what's that got to do with the price of fish? confused

betsysgran Fri 20-Sept-13 19:48:09

River please see previous posts.

Riverwalk Fri 20-Sept-13 19:57:56

I've read the previous posts Betsy and can't for the life of me understand why people are asking j08 if she would swear in front of her grandchildren.

The thread wasn't aimed at anyone's grandchildren but grown adults who are now swooning at the printed word.

I'm flabbergasted at all the tut-tutting!

Ana Fri 20-Sept-13 19:59:35

Me too! confused

Ana Fri 20-Sept-13 20:00:06

(And the reporting)

betsysgran Fri 20-Sept-13 20:13:21

Not guilty of any reporting but feel that using language like this can be offensive. We are all intelligent people with a very strong command of the English language. I personally feel that such usage is not necessary to put over your point in a heading in a thread in which the majority of GNs will agree. You are entitled to your opinion, as am I.

Atqui Fri 20-Sept-13 20:33:55

Surely people are aware from past experience that using the F word in the title of a post will provoke a reaction to the language rather than the issue?
Probably repeating myself here. Yes, young people say it all the time , as well as another word beginning with C. Many older people, have been brought up to find extreme swearing offensive, and old habits die hard . Someof us have become immune. What purpose has it achieved? Its upset some more sensitive people , and sidelined the issue of Syrian Children.

celebgran Fri 20-Sept-13 20:40:25

It is great shame thatnthenwhole tone of the forum is lowered by the heading.

Maybe guidelines aren't broken I certainly not got time or energy to report it but feel disappointed by the grans net team comment use of this swear word not necessary.

celebgran Fri 20-Sept-13 20:41:14

At qui very well put sadly some posters just crave disapproval!

NfkDumpling Fri 20-Sept-13 20:43:45

Sometimes, just sometimes something is so terrible and bad that bad angry language can be justified. What's happening in Syria is beyond polite language. I'm not a particular intelligent or articulate person and I cannot find the words to express how I feel watching the mayhem there. Certainly not polite ones. J0 is right to be angry and swearing shows that anger - Polite language doesn't.

betsysgran Fri 20-Sept-13 20:55:35

Very disappointed in both some GNs and also HQ. Think I'll take a break from GN as I feel it has been changed by some GNs and not for the better. sad

vampirequeen Fri 20-Sept-13 20:58:54

Oh for goodness sake it's only a word. I'm sure you've all heard it and/or seen it written before. As NfkDumpling says....sometimes polite language just doesn't say enough.

Penstemmon Fri 20-Sept-13 21:17:26

Gracious! What a fuss. If you were offended by the swearing in the title no need to click on the thread! Why upset yourself over a word!

I swear quite a lot for emphasis but like most other people I am judicious about when and where! On an adult forum it is an expectation and I take no offence. In front of children I would object.

thatbags Fri 20-Sept-13 21:32:33

Focussing on burkas is about liberating women and equality. It isn't about anything else.

I feel all the OP's outrage for and horror about what is happening in Syria as well as thinking the burka is a misogynist monstrosity. I don't need to grade these things in my mind. I just do what I can where I can to change things for the better.

That will have to do whether people approve or not because that is who I am.

And I don't mind the word that some are objecting to.

Go j08, fight for and shout about what matters to you and do it in your own way. flowers

absent Fri 20-Sept-13 21:37:00

I don't particularly object to the language, although I am uncertain what the OP is sorry about. However, I do object to the implication that the rest of us are a bunch of dilettantes and chatterers without an ounce of compassion.

Penstemmon Fri 20-Sept-13 21:56:13

thatbags I am also opposed to the oppression of women of all races/cultures/faiths etc. However I really do think there is a real danger of dehumanising Muslims through continued negative press, much of it repetitive and often scaremongering. For example bank raids by people in shirts and trousers are more common than a one off incident of a gang in burkas! They chose burkas but robbers have often chosen masks, fancy dress etc. It is a red herring.

liminetta Fri 20-Sept-13 22:33:39

I would just likw to say that I strongly object to the swearing on Gransnet.Tonight I watched a discussion on Question Time with David Dimbleby.Everyone had their say and he conducted an intelligent discussion on the wearing of the burka.NO swearing needed.
I also am outraged at what is going on in Syria, as I was at what went on in Bosnia, Rawanda ....and so it goes on......and on.......

j08 Fri 20-Sept-13 22:51:20

KatGransnet I wouldn't say I like to swear tbh.

Galen Fri 20-Sept-13 22:54:42

Jingle, what about the doctor being sworn at as I was on Monday!
