...that will apparently be arriving to live here tomorrow?

The stirring up of hostility towards legal migrants was disgraceful, and now the DM needs to answer for the blatant lies and wrongful speculation it printed in the last month or so.

petallus Sun 26-Jan-14 11:21:12

I basically agree but I think we should wait to see how many Romanians come in over a period of say six months or a year before breathing a sigh of relief.

Ana Sun 26-Jan-14 11:28:01

It wasn't only the DM

The DM has dropped itself in it because they have attributed quotes and 'facts' to individuals and companies who have had no dealings with them about any issue, let alone provided statistics and sales figures for Romanians and Bulgarians seeking benefits advice or purchasing travel tickets. If they'd referred to anonymous sources, they wouldn't be able to give their articles credibility, but neither do they gain credibility by making things up.

I am interested in your post could you give a couple of examples of facts and figures that the DM has reported where the paper has made things up. I don't mean a report which clearly attributes/states pertaining to a person or 'body' but facts and figures they have produced in isolation.

I don't think anybody knows or ever will know any true figures related to this matter. I don't think we will ever know the true number as there are obviously so many aspects concerning immigration.

We do know however we have a massive unemployment problem and it does not take a brain of Britain to know that if you have high immigration numbers who fill those vacancies then something will shift against BOTH the indigenous population and yes also to the immigrant population already here who have successfully made a good contribution to our society by working hard and paying their taxes. It's a folly to believe only the indigenous population think there is a problem.

I know the argument that immigrants do the jobs our people don't want to take. Perhaps Labour are on to something when Milliband says Labour will educate you, guarantee you a job and if you don't take it you will loose all benefits. confused.

I agree there are lovely, kind, respectful immigrants, I have them as friends. They are however, like myself, well aware that there is concern over how far the free movement of people can go. The rise of the Far Right in some countries, worse than we have here!, is quite alarming. They are growing because there is a liberal thinking agenda that refuses to accept discussion or action over the problem. It will be interesting to see how well the likes of UKIP and the nationalist parties in other European countries do in the soon to be held elections. I might sound contradictory when I say I hope that UKIP does not do as well as expected, as whilst I agree with some of their views, I think there is a lot of tosh spoken and UKIP is a one man band that I wouldn't mind betting implodes as I think Farage will get bad tempered once the interrogation of it's policies takes hold. I even wonder if he will resign from his role, but that is obviously purely my personal thought.

I also think there is a point to be made about the wording and subsequent actions that have been put into place. The Free Movement of a person is fine. The right to benefits, housing and NHS is, I say with a hard hat on, not OK. It is simply not sustainable as we are now finding out at great cost. There is a distinct divide in parts of the UK. there are those who daily have to deal with the influx and those who haven't a ruddy clue what it's like to have to deal with it. This is where the danger lies. One side thinks nobody is going to change their lot and the other side thinks they are being racist or are all bigots.

Why are immigrants taking up the vacant jobs available?

JessM Sun 26-Jan-14 18:31:55

Who says they are aka? Where on earth did you get that idea from?
Plenty of UK people are getting jobs all the time.
Many immigrants are filling jobs in the south of England that are not appealing to the local population. e.g. long, unsocial shift work as waiting staff in hotels.

BlueBelle Sun 26-Jan-14 19:12:23

I so agree with your post Jess

Aka Sun 26-Jan-14 19:16:15

POGS did....the question was to her. Didn't I read her post correctly or did you not read it? confused

Aka Sun 26-Jan-14 19:18:36

'we have a massive unemployment problem and it does not take a brain of Britain to know that if you have high immigration numbers who fill those vacancies…'

Why are you so ready to jump on me ....again?

whenim64 Sun 26-Jan-14 19:19:31

POGS if you read the link that Nellie put on, the complaint contains those details.

JessM Sun 26-Jan-14 19:44:13

The quote is opinion, not fact aka which is why I did not understand your post.

Aka Sun 26-Jan-14 19:57:46

And mine was a question about that Jess so just back off will you.

POGS Sun 26-Jan-14 20:13:41

Whenim

I missed the Bump by Nellie, obviously I understand your post and it's reasoning.

Thank you for responding. I am a DM reader so it will also be of interest to me to read any outcome also.

Just an observation: my local Co-op which opened two years ago is entirely staffed by young/young(ish) Asians. Judging by their accents they are not local Londoners of Asian heritage but recent arrivals/students.

They work very hard - the store is open from 06.00. 23.00. So at this late hour these young men and women have to wend their way home to heaven knows where - presumably they don't live in expensive central London.

Do locals not apply for these jobs?

Does the Co-op actively recruit foreigners, as Pret-a-Manger is accused of doing?

Are you better off on benefits?

Nonu Sun 26-Jan-14 20:28:06

POGS , I will say this gently , you are VERY brave to admitting to being a DM reader.
For what it is worth , I don"t take that paper , except at weekends for the TV pullout but many G/Ns seem to really get a really BIG bee in their bonnet about this paper !
sometimes it is best to just chill , D/M readers don"t really seem to get their knickers in a twist about left wing publications .
However, what do I know ?

Ana Sun 26-Jan-14 20:31:56

You're more astute than you're letting on, Nonu! smile

Goodness, an admitted DM reader and a self-confessed Tory voter (albeit disillusioned) in one day...

Nonu Sun 26-Jan-14 20:55:02

ANA may I ask , are you flattering to deceive ?

Ana Sun 26-Jan-14 21:04:40

Eh? confused

Penstemmon Sun 26-Jan-14 21:37:34

POGS can read what she likes and should not be persuaded or shamed or bullied into keeping it quiet! What a dreadful place it would be if people felt ashamed to read a paper or feel they had to keep quiet about it. My socialist principles would support the freedom of the individual to read what they wish.

However I also believe that people should be able to challenge /defend ideas, thoughts, policies based on well researched and verified facts and not just on personal anecdote or massaged data and 'economical' truth!.

The DM is a paper I find sensationalist and full of Tory propaganda with articles that are often styled to spread anxiety through its scaremongery columns which supports the current governments policies and thinking. As I am not a Tory supporter or thinker obviously I do not choose to buy the paper. I do read some of its articles on line. I accept that GNers that are Conservative/UKIP and even further to the right will regard the papers I prefer to buy in a similar way.

Perhaps it would be good for all of us to read a newspaper we do not usually read for a few weeks.

Yes I am .
For reasons unknown to me , that post appeared twice .
