Just seen it on the news. Flames billowing from top floor, with fire having started in basement.

I feel so sorry for all the students, many of whom will have lost their end of year or end of course practical projects.

Tegan Fri 23-May-14 14:32:01

Oh no; one of my favourite places. Is the Library in danger?

Aka Fri 23-May-14 14:35:55

That's terrible.

Tegan Fri 23-May-14 14:38:55

Have just read the link; of course it's in danger. My son studied Mackintosh for his A Level Art and the visit to the school was the highlight of out weekend there. Don't think any news item like this has upset me so much before [I agree about the students and their work also but the building is very dear to my heart as is all of Mackintosh's work].

janerowena Fri 23-May-14 14:39:38

How awful. Tragic, in fact.

suebailey1 Fri 23-May-14 14:57:06

Oh no - I'm a big Mackintosh fan and loved my visit to the School and Kelvingrove last summer.

whenim64 Fri 23-May-14 15:36:26

Oh no, that's awful. I'm also a Mackintosh fan, but love the building, too. I hope much of it can be saved.

whenim64 Fri 23-May-14 15:41:50

Says here the library is lost

Apparently the library at Glasgow School of Art has also been lost. Architecture/design like this is irreplaceable: twitter.com/M0REM00REM0RE/status/469849381626478592/photo/1

That is sad news - what a terrible thing to happen.

Tegan Fri 23-May-14 16:34:16

I can't believe this has happened. Was there not a sprinkler system etc. All I can think [in a very selfish way] is, thank goodness I've been there and at least I've seen it. I hope my son doesn't hear the news; he's away on holiday at the moment..he'll be very upset.

Soutra Fri 23-May-14 16:49:27

MIL was a student there in the 30's so we have a particular affection for it. A lovely building with a unique history. sad

Tegan Fri 23-May-14 16:56:10

I can't stop crying. Can't think of another building that would have affected me so much. At least [trying to be positive here] it isn't the Mona Lisa. By that I mean that the design and the plans are still there and it can and will be rebuilt even though it's soul may have been destroyed.

ffinnochio Fri 23-May-14 16:56:46

sad

besottedgran Fri 23-May-14 16:58:06

So sad to hear this news.

Priceless architecture appears to have gone - but thank goodness -

no lives lost.

Agus Fri 23-May-14 17:04:08

Oh God no! I don't want to hear any more just yet. I feel sick.

Can't believe this is happening to our much loved building here.

Tegan Fri 23-May-14 17:06:49

Do you live in Glasgow Agus? Is there a more beloved building anywhere in the world?

ninathenana Fri 23-May-14 17:07:28

Very sad news, another Mackintosh fan here.

ninathenana Fri 23-May-14 17:10:32

No lives lost phew a glimmer in the darkness.

J52 Fri 23-May-14 17:54:34

We are both shocked and very upset. Thankful that no lives lost. shock sad Sorry for all who have lost work and treasures.

Agus Fri 23-May-14 18:11:57

I am Glaswegian Tegan but live on the outskirts now.

I do love, this building. Family and friends were students there and I still pop in from time to time. We have so much beautiful architecture in Glasgow but the Art School and Scotland Street School (also CRM) are my favourites.

This is heartbreaking, not only for Glaswegians but for so many people who love and have an affinity with the Art School.

Tegan Fri 23-May-14 18:29:33

As part of my never ending tidying up I was actually looking at our photos of the School of Art a couple of nights ago. We've travelled to many places over the years but nothing ever affected me as much as seeing the Tearooms, the School of Art and Scotland Street School.

Agus Fri 23-May-14 19:01:15

I think the fact that The Mac was a piece of art itself as well as being an art school was what made it stand out from others.

I have just watched local Scottish news. Most importantly no one was injured or lives lost and Muriel Grey, the present Chair and ex student spoke of a determination to first of all see what has and can be salvaged and take it from there.

Tegan Fri 23-May-14 19:22:36

It will rise again; given the layout of the building [windy staircases and corridors] it is incredible that no one was injured. I daren't look at my photo's as I'll realise even more what has been destroyed.

Wheniwasyourage Fri 23-May-14 19:35:08

How very sad. I was watching Muriel Gray too, Agus, and she seemed so strong. Of course it's excellent news that no-one was hurt. I feel terribly sorry for the students who have lost so much work.

We were just wondering about whether it can ever be rebuilt, but thinking of some of the buildings in Würzburg and Dresden which we have seen, where they were destroyed by bombing but have been rebuilt as they were, perhaps the records there must be would allow that in the Art School. Of course it's a replica when that happens, but it preserves the memory of superb design and workmanship.
