I used to pass it every day going to school. Even at a young age (5) there was something wonderful about it. My son studied there and is absolutely devastated. Glad no-one was hurt and we can only hope it can be restored.

sad

I'm so distressed by this news. The Art School is a building much loved by the people of Glasgow.

On the 10 o'clock news it said all was not lost. Much of the students' has been saved and many of the treasures. Hard to believe watching the footage but I hope it's true

Aka Fri 23-May-14 23:04:54

Should read 'students' work has been saved'

Tegan Fri 23-May-14 23:37:26

Oh I do hope it's true. Fingers crossed.

That really would be great news. Just have to wait and see what tomorrow's news is to give us a rough idea about the extent of the damage.

The news was much more hopeful this morning - once again the Fire Service has done an excellent job and deserve to keep their pay rights and pensions.

My younger daughter studied at the GSA. We went up for her design show 10 years ago this week and it was so special wandering round that truly beautiful and iconic building, and getting a taste of all the talent being nurtured there. I was so upset to see the news yesterday, but it looks much more hopeful today. I'm sure some of the students will have lost their work though, which is terrible. Three out of this year's Turner Prize nominees studied in that building, which shows what a special place it is.

I meant to say three out of the four nominees. Amazing.

According to the news here in Scotland, 90% of the building and its contents have been saved, thankfully. Hard to believe after having seen the footage, but positive news, just the same. The fire had apparently started in the basements.

Had a wonderful tour with one of the students a few years ago. The only o'the tourist was a young American with no teeth. The student went well over her allotted time with us. She was full of anecdotes and details. And as it must have been burning I was having lunch with a friend who was taking a Canadian visitor to Glasgow and they had only put in the Willow tea rooms and not the College of Art on their itinerary and I was saying of all things don't miss the College.

Stansgran Sat 24-May-14 14:26:13

Lunch yesterday sorry I really should reread the nonesense in type.

Agus Sat 24-May-14 14:34:07

Haven't managed to see any news yet Marelli'thanks for posting that. 90%!
That is hard to believe but very welcoming news.

Well done to the wonderful fire services who pooled together and arrived at the scene rapidly.

Hoping to hear of a restoration fund which I will gladly contribute to.

The news I heard most recently was that 70% had been preserved but the library was gone.

Maggiemaybe Sat 24-May-14 15:38:37

According to the BBC Scotland website's latest update:

"The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said more than 90% of the structure was viable and they had protected up to 70% of the contents."

This seems remarkable following the horrific coverage of flames shooting through the roof and windows - the fire service did a tremendous job. Apparently the extent of the damage to the library is not yet known - let's hope no news is good news.

I've never been but I've always thought it was a wonderful building and I was so shocked to see the fire. I noticed that the students watching looked very upset so, hopefully, they realise how lucky they are to have such a beautiful school.

Just read in The Herald ( Scottish newspaper ) that much of the Mackintosh legacy, letters, water colours etc was kept in a fireproof vault. Great news, also that the building was fully insured, so hopefully reconstruction can take place as soon as possible. Apparently, the task of sifting through the devastation to rescue artefacts will take some time. X

Just read the Herald too J52. Really heartening news X

Tegan Mon 26-May-14 17:39:39

It's such a relief to hear all this.
