The 'ordinary people' voted Hamas into power.

Eloethan Sun 10-Aug-14 21:10:41

nigglynellie All the aid agencies and most of the commentators attest to the fact that it is impossible for the Palestinians to evade these bombings - a huge number of people have been squeezed into a very small area and there is no escape.

I agree with jingle that the Hamas rockets are but a pinprick as compared to the terrible might of the Israeli military machine.

As for propaganda, Israel is known to have a sophisticated PR machine that is very active in the US.

This is a link to a longish film which analyses how this propaganda machine is used to present a false picture to the American people (who need to be kept on side as they are, through their taxes, giving massive amounts of aid to Israel) as to the causes of the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians. You may say "oh well, it will just be Palestinian propaganda". But most of the contributors are actually Jewish or Israeli and include a former senior member of the IDF and two rabbis.

I do understand that people are fed information by a highly sophisticated PR and media regime but I still find it shocking that educated people do not unxerstand how powerful and wealthy Israel is compared to Palestine. That power buys defences which easily intercept the Hamas rockets. Palestine has no defences to protect its people against Israeli attack. It is onits knees. All it can do, not to feel totally humiliated is to resist. I don't know what people expect them to do... give up their hopes for a free home???

merlotgran Sun 10-Aug-14 22:31:59

So what you are saying, Penstemmon is that Israel should stop all hostilities with Hamas because it can afford to protect its citizens with a powerful defence system.

Hamas will carry on firing rockets into Israel which won't matter because Israel is a wealthy country.

What will that achieve?

jinglbellsfrocks Sun 10-Aug-14 22:32:12

It's not anti-Semitism. More like anti-bullying.

jinglbellsfrocks Sun 10-Aug-14 22:34:08

merlot, we haven't got the answers! It all seems impossible.

jinglbellsfrocks Sun 10-Aug-14 22:35:44

But we can condemn the cruelty. Loudly and clearly!

merlotgran Sun 10-Aug-14 22:38:41

Yes. We can condemn the disproportionate response by Israel.

Aka Sun 10-Aug-14 22:42:32

Of course we condemn the disproportionate response. But it was made clear on tonight's news by a Hamas spokesman that they intend o keep firing rockets too.

A point I need clarifying. Who supplies Hamas with arms?

jinglbellsfrocks Sun 10-Aug-14 22:47:22

Other Arab nations? Syria? Iran?

merlotgran Sun 10-Aug-14 22:48:52

Turkey? Qatar?

jinglbellsfrocks Sun 10-Aug-14 22:52:41

I hope this doesn't happen

jinglbellsfrocks Sun 10-Aug-14 22:57:21

so wrong

Aka Sun 10-Aug-14 22:58:39

Definitely not Turkey. They were the first Muslim country to acknowledge the State of Israel.

Aka Sun 10-Aug-14 23:02:30

North Korea, now there's a horrible thought. But I think their shows of military strength is 'all fur coat and no knickers'. Didn't their one and only attempt to launch a missile into space end in trial humiliation?

jinglbellsfrocks Sun 10-Aug-14 23:04:27

Yes. But they could probably rustle up a few loads of little rockets.hmm

Aka Sun 10-Aug-14 23:05:41

This would seem to say not

Penstemmon Mon 11-Aug-14 16:21:41

I am saying that if Israel withdrew from land it is not entitled to occupy it would help. They are being bloody minded as much as Hamas continuing to fire rockets.

Thanks bags, for your posts.

Tinkerbell - is there a conceptual difference in your mind between Islam and Islam extremists? Do you actually mean Islam fundamentalists ? Or do you not know what you mean at all because you are just so prejudiced ? Israelis just want to be left in peace ? Have you any idea of the terrorism that led to the establishment of Israel? Of the land grabbing that had occurred since? Of Palestinian children in jail? And wow, Christianity has been such a force for good - look at Central and South America and the RC church, look at the role of the Dutch Reformed Church in South Africa , look at the role of the Church in the Southern States of America blessing segregation and an example this week of the power of the church in Ireland which wants to continue making the state refuse abortions to girls pregnant because of rape or incest.

GrannyTwice Mon 11-Aug-14 20:36:53

X posts with deletion but you get my drift ....

merlotgran Mon 11-Aug-14 20:44:53

I read Tinkerbell's post which I'm sure was intended to be provocative but is it right for it to have been reported and deleted?

It was an unpleasant post but I can't see how it broke forum guidelines.

GrannyTwice Mon 11-Aug-14 21:27:49

I posted my criticism because T's post was much worse than provocative and unpleasant - it was intellectual rubbish - you simply cannot conflate Islam and Islam extremism. Whether it broke guidelines or not I can't say but a UKIP councillor resigned after making the same analogy and I don't actually think that the fundemental wing of any religion can claim any moral high ground.

merlotgran Mon 11-Aug-14 21:33:07

Intellectual rubbish?

Surely ignoring an opinion you disagree with is better than having it wiped out even if the facts are incorrect.

Isn't everyone entitled to an opinion on here even if it's misguided? hmm
