Cliff Richard - shock!

I heard on the 1 o'clock news that police are searching the Berkshire home of Cliff Richard regarding an alleged sex offence with a boy, aged under 16, dating back to the 1980's.

DD3 aged 27 is in shock and was heard to say 'What is the world coming to, it will be Terry Wogan and Bruce Forsyth next!'

It will be interesting to see whether the fact that it has been reported on television brings any more victims to the fore.

I don't believe this allegation is true. I want to know why journalists were there to film the police entering and leaving Cliff's English home. Feels like a set up to me.

Nonu Thu 14-Aug-14 22:45:23

Not usually smoke without fire1

Mishap Fri 15-Aug-14 07:54:53

Yes - I thought that it was most odd that all the cameras were there to film the police going in - it really does not seem right. Who tipped them the wink?

whatsgoingon Fri 15-Aug-14 08:19:38

Mishap the police could have I would assume, some of them are as corrupt as the suspects they are investigating.
Most of us are law abiding citizens but sadly there are some evil twisted people out there and the police have an almost impossible job to do because not everyone is what they seem to be.

It used to be the accepted procedure for Police to inform the media before raiding someone - and although it is less common nowadays it still happens quite legitimately. It's certainly not evidence of corruption.

There have always been rumours about 'Stiff'. No smoke without fire! Strange bloke- bloody awful music.

Anniebach Fri 15-Aug-14 09:26:13

The police have always tipped off the media . Nothing is gained by doing do, unless destroying a persons reputation on an allegation can count as in the public interest which says much of what the public are interested in . No matter the outcome of this we are witnessing a career ending , smoke without fire etc. Innocent untill proven guilty doesn't apply in this country.

Pity alleged corrupt police officers are not named , give them a dose of their own medicine

I am no Richards fan, find him irritating and rather pompous but I feel so sorry for him, 2014 and we still have 'nudge, wink,he is gay'

Nonnie Fri 15-Aug-14 10:48:47

I wonder why it took quite so many police to search on apartment? I thought they were claiming to be understaffed. Seems a lot of them came down from Yorkshire too. He used to have a big house in Weighbridge, if he still does why haven't they searched that. Not sure they would find much after so long anyway but perhaps they were looking for something more recent?

When did Jimmy Saville's crimes become 'actual' instead of 'alleged'? Not defending him, just saying that there has been no trial. Every time I was in Stoke Mandeville around 40 years ago they sang his praises.

Anniebach Fri 15-Aug-14 11:45:48

Staged for the cameras I expect Nonnie, two officers walking up the drive wouldn't have the same effect

Cagsy Fri 15-Aug-14 12:21:43

I was wondering that Nonnie. I have no idea what he has or hasn't been up to and if he is gay or not, and over the latter I care not a jot but surely people can remain single, it's not an offence, though some of his music is!
You do wonder where it will all end and how sure we can be about events that happened 30 years or so ago, wonder how many celebs are having sleepless nights?

nonnasusie Fri 15-Aug-14 13:50:10

Dare I admit that I've been a Cliff fan since I was about 12. I've been to a few concerts and they were always packed out with fans of all ages so where are all these fans? I'd have thought on a site as big as this there must be some who like him and/or his music!! Or is it a case of no-one will admit it?
I just hope the allegations are not true!

KatyK Fri 15-Aug-14 15:16:49

susie - I've always liked Cliff. I wouldn't say I was a die hard fan but I've been to a few of his concerts in the past and have some of his LPs/CDs. He puts on a great show. The venues have been packed with fans of all ages, with everyone up dancing the night away.

dustyangel Fri 15-Aug-14 15:33:09

I was only saying on Sunday, how pleasant he always seems when being interviewed on radio. I don't like his hair but that is by the by.
I hope the allegations aren't true as well.

Nonu Fri 15-Aug-14 15:50:58

NONA, I was reading in today"s paper that he HAS had a lot of support from his fans and online.

I`ve been a Cliff fan since I was 15, back in 1958, when he made his debut. I`ve never been to a concert, can`t afford it, but have bought a good few records over the years. I truly do hope that the allegations are false, too many of my bubbles have been burst lately.

Marelli Fri 15-Aug-14 16:08:13

Haven't logged on since early yesterday, glass, and yes I do remember the conversation that we had about Cliff Richards. Can't remember anything inflammatory at all unless you consider talking about his moving to Barbados and what his hair, skin etc is like......and I think I said my DH saw him a lot when he (DH) worked out there in the late 60's. No - all perfectly innocent and nothing that would cause any contempt in any court! smile

Treebee Fri 15-Aug-14 19:58:58

I never liked the pretend Elvis Cliff, but have liked him and his music since the '60s. I've seen him 3 times in concert, a true professional with a friendly, likeable persona. I admire him for being so upfront about his Christian faith, a very uncool thing to do. Yes, I bought the Milennium Prayer and swayed along to it at the end of 1999.
I hope he is found innocent of this suggested abuse and that it's not the end of such a brilliant career. I do hope so.

papaoscar Fri 15-Aug-14 20:30:09

I agree, Treebee.

thatbags Fri 15-Aug-14 21:10:42

I have never suspected CR of anything untoward but my perception of his character has always been that it was nauseatingly goody-goody. Of to read what is said on MN.

Faye Fri 15-Aug-14 21:37:24

I read years ago that Cliff Richards had a live in partner. I wonder if the romance he had with Sue Barker was a smokescreen.

Elegran Fri 15-Aug-14 21:46:45

He does say "companion" in that piece, not partner.

feetlebaum Fri 15-Aug-14 21:47:38

Who is Cliff Richards then? Any relation Cliff Richard?

Ana Fri 15-Aug-14 21:49:11

Pedant!

Nonu Fri 15-Aug-14 21:57:46

faye read my post 14/8. 18.03

susieb755 Fri 15-Aug-14 22:21:34

I know innocent until etc etc, but this wouldn't shock me in the way Rolf did( I still cant believe Rolf )
Libel is only libel if untrue by the way, and I suspect that several GN's like me have knowledge that CR's 'non gay' unmarried lifestyle could bear more scrutiny - but then it is his personal life and up to him how he wants to portray himself
