Sometimes I despair of our species.

durhamjen I realise that. TBH I am always suspicious of DM articles too, especially the online versions, they are often hyped up. The thread has gone all over the place so I'm not sure quite what you mean by your comment?

Tegan Mon 01-Dec-14 13:08:46

Newspapers sensationalise articles that they write; I know that having seen the sort of headlines that they use when I've wanted to pass information on and have contacted them with a view to having a story publicised sad. They want a storyline to be as sensational as possible and will look for that angle; some newspapers more than others.

Tegan Mon 01-Dec-14 13:17:47

...I'm not, by the way saying that this article was sensationalised; the pictures speak for themselves. I do question PETA in some ways; I was told once that their long term aim would be for people to not even have animals as pets as that is regarded as exploitation but I don't know if that is the case. I was once sent a PETA video about raccoon dogs being skinned alive for their fur. Much as the practice is abhorrent to me I was also angry with the sender of the email for subjecting me to something that has stayed in my mind ever since. Someone sent the same video to my daughter recently and she was very upset by it. And, as I've said before the RSPCA are an organisation with a lot of money that puts down healthy animals so I question their ethics sometimes as well.

If weidos on the other side of the world think they have a need to do horrible things to animals, there is probably not much we in the West can do about it. Be glad they stopped bull-fighting in Spain. No point in making yourself miserable about this. No way we can change it.

jinglbellsfrocks Mon 01-Dec-14 14:18:11

And the thing about the deer certainly isn't worth worrying about. Isolated incident.

I am not ashamed to be part of the human race. Too many good things being done by good people in a very sad and unfortunate world.

Riverwalk Mon 01-Dec-14 14:20:32

jings bullfighting is still a very popular 'sport' in Spain sad

jinglbellsfrocks Mon 01-Dec-14 14:32:48

Ah! I was thinking of a bullring in Barcelona, which is now something else. Yes, only actually banned in Catalonia. Numbers falling apparently (thank goodness)

Tegan Mon 01-Dec-14 14:36:15

I was wondering if the driver of the car that hit the deer was injured [I'd be surprised if they weren't, given that the impact must have been great] which meant the police had quite a major incident on their hands.

Riverwalk Mon 01-Dec-14 14:40:56

Bullfighting seems worse than the goings-on in Nepal .... it's done for fun!

I didn't realise until recently that the bull always gets killed, even if he wins the fight, still gets put down.

Petallus You might find this article by Dr Briffa of interest.
www.drbriffa.com/2007/09/03/study-links-blood-sugar-imbalance-with-increased-appetite/

Basically he is saying that the reason that eating high GI carbohydrates like white bread and refined sugars makes people gain more weight than eating the equivalent number of calories from protein and/or fat, is that the carbohydrates stimulate the appetite, so you want more.
I don't think anyone advocates cutting out carbs completely - just trying to restrict them to the complex carbohydrates found in vegetables and whole grains.

anniezzz09 Mon 01-Dec-14 16:28:15

Tegan I remember that PETA video of the dogs being skinned alive. I still feel sick when I think about it. Like jingl says, there really isn't much most of us can do, beyond endless petition signing, about these horrible things happening on the other side of the world.
I wondered about the driver of the car too. A friend's daughter had a deer jump out onto the front of her car. Smashed the windscreen, did a lot of damage to the car and of course to the deer too. Driver very upset and shocked. I wonder if there are rules about circumstances when policemen can fire their guns? Always hard to make judgments when you weren't there.

durhamjen Mon 01-Dec-14 16:33:16

So why are we all making judgments about the people in Nepal. I assume none of us is there.

janeainsworth Mon 01-Dec-14 16:54:32

I don't think anyone is judging the people, Durhamjen. It's the quasi-religious practice that is being judged.

thatbags Mon 01-Dec-14 16:58:18

Speak for yourself, dj, re judging others.

Nonu Mon 01-Dec-14 17:30:11

I don"t feel in the least bit ashamed of being human.

Elegran Mon 01-Dec-14 17:39:22

I think most of us respect the people but don't think very highly of their religious practices.

jinglbellsfrocks Mon 01-Dec-14 19:01:37

I think you could get fat on a surfeit of pork chops.

jinglbellsfrocks Mon 01-Dec-14 19:03:33

It makes me a bit cross when someone posts a link to an article, and then continues, "Basically what he is saying..." As if other posters' comprehension is just not up to it. hmm

POGS Mon 01-Dec-14 19:04:08

Elegran

At last. [Hallelujah emoticon]

jinglbellsfrocks Mon 01-Dec-14 19:05:48

Calories are calories. Makes no difference where they come from.

janeainsworth Mon 01-Dec-14 19:11:14

jingl it gets on my tits when people make veiled references to other posters when they could perfectly well address their remarks directly to the poster.

Personally I find it annoying when people just post a link without any explanation. The reason I try to give a brief summary of the link is so people can decide whether they want to bother reading it or not.

Get over yourself.

janeainsworth Mon 01-Dec-14 19:12:48

And presumably you know a great deal more about metabolism than all the medical researchers who have written articles in the subject.

jinglbellsfrocks Mon 01-Dec-14 19:25:32

You reckon that doc is a medical researcher?! grin

It wasn't really a "veiled comment". It was very obvious.

I don't think I know how to "get over myself".

Riverwalk Mon 01-Dec-14 19:30:52

I find it very useful when a poster summarises a link .... saves you having to read it if it's very long. You can then decide whether to delve further.

It's a million times more considerate than posters who just post a link and a thread title!

jinglbellsfrocks Mon 01-Dec-14 19:33:36

That's alright then. smile

I guess we all see things differently.
