Breaking News - Allegedly 10 people killed at office of satirical magazine in Paris

Whilst we don't have all the facts, I have read that at least ten people have been killed at the offices of a satirical French magazine in Paris where gunmen have opened fire.

Given the troubled times we are living in should publications try to rein in the content of anything that might be deemed controversial to certain groups because scenarios like this one will make it hardly worth the loss of life/ves, or should free speech prevail at all costs?

I suspect that Thought for the Day is faith-based because of something in the BBC's Constitution.
At one time, there was a Daily Service which I think is still broadcast on long-wave, and Thought for the Day replaced that on FM.

It has been reported that the Paris Police Commisioner allegedly shot himself. There is also a theory that he was murdered to quell information he had uncovered.

I wonder if we will ever be told the truth.

says here about people wanting secular thought for the day

Sorry to digress from the thread.

Riverwalk Mon 12-Jan-15 18:08:47

I'm not asking for a totally secular TFTD, just fair dibs.

Eloethan Mon 12-Jan-15 18:20:15

Yes, exactly, *Riverwalk".

nigglynellie Mon 12-Jan-15 18:21:00

Surely not Agus! Nothing about it on the news this evening, I wonder why?!

Eloethan Mon 12-Jan-15 18:22:04

My husband saw it on Twitter.

jinglbellsfrocks Mon 12-Jan-15 18:31:25

Yes. I meant a fair share.

Agus Mon 12-Jan-15 18:32:32

You will find the report on PARIS (INTELLIHUB) if your Google Paris Police Commissioner. Sorry I can't do links

It seems he was already depressed and overworked so maybe the killings were the final straw?

KatyK Mon 12-Jan-15 18:34:36

Daily mail online has it.

Did any Brummies see the Fox News?

And this, again from Fox News. The solution is so easy, isnt't it? ((((O))))

Yes - I saw that the poor man was suffering from depression, so there was more to it. But meeting those families must have been so hard for him.

granjura - this Brummie saw the excerpt of Stephen Emerson saying that Birmingham was a no go area for non-muslims confused In actual fact 22% of our citizens are Muslim and we all seem to get along OK most of the time. I live here and can go where I please. He also said that in parts of London Muslims walk around with weapons and beat up anyone who isn't Muslim. What an absolute idiot. They spoke to him on our local news tonight and he has apologised profusely. The trouble is some Americans will believe him. Birmingham was the only UK city in the top 10 cities world-wide, so we can't be that bad! Jokers like this we don't need in the present situation.

Sorry, tried to copy the Fox News about Birmingham, but the other one came up about killing Muslims.

Nice to agree with Cameron, for once

Fox News man is 'idiot' for Birmingham Muslim comments – David Cameron

‘I choked on my porridge,’ British prime minister says in response to Steven Emerson’s claim that Birmingham is a ‘totally Muslim city’

Steven Emerson, who claims to be a terrorism expert, told Fox News Birmingham was a ‘totally Muslim city’ and London patrolled by violent religious police

The Fox News commentator who said the British city of Birmingham was a no-go zone for non-Muslims is a “complete idiot”, the prime minister, David Cameron, has said.

I saw the Fox News - someone had posted the clip on FaceBook. It is truly appalling that this sort of misrepresentation can happen, but more to the point is the fact that, many honourable, decent, stay at home Americans (only about 46% have a passport) might well believe it.

It is sensationalist journalism at its worst. Makes our red tops look incredibly tame.

granjura Mon 12-Jan-15 20:09:05

The worst is, I have relatives there who are Tea Party types who actually believe Fox News = the only ones to tell the truth! They only watch Fox News (Murdoch!)- saw a brilliant Tweet about it by JK Rowling.

Could anyone copy the news video- just don't seem able to do it. Thanks.

Here is another simple Fox News solution:

Regardless of the rights/wrongs of events in Paris, I cannot help but feel that Charlie Hebdo's front page today is poking the tiger with a pointed stick to see what will happen. The vast majority of Muslims have condemned the attacks, but this front page will be deeply offensive to all Muslims, including those that condemned the attacks.

What is their true motive for doing this?

Mishap Tue 13-Jan-15 15:40:09

Oh dear.

petallus Tue 13-Jan-15 15:56:06

I'm not surprised. Deliberately provocative like the previous cartoons.
