Whilst we don't have all the facts, I have read that at least ten people have been killed at the offices of a satirical French magazine in Paris where gunmen have opened fire.

Given the troubled times we are living in should publications try to rein in the content of anything that might be deemed controversial to certain groups because scenarios like this one will make it hardly worth the loss of life/ves, or should free speech prevail at all costs?

I don't know what anyone else feels but I'd be prepared to bet everything I own that bullets hurt a lot more than offended feelings.

Just returning to the journalist saying that Palestinians suffer at the hands of Israelis...I too am the daughter of a Holocaust survivor and I believe the journalist was quite correct to point out what he did. He did nothing wrong and I don't believe he was insensitive.
Jews don't have the monopoly on persecution, by any means.
For the record, my father, at 88, is a very active member of Jews for Justice for Palestinians.

Thank you for this post Rowantree- and my total admiration for you father and his work, for justice.

rubylady, his hair and tatooes don't bother or frighten me at all- and I'd like him to stay as he is. BUT... as so many people are prejudiced about appearance, I'd love him to cut his hair, put a suit and tie on- stop gesticulating, and then say what he is already saying- and see what happens. He shouldn't have to- but it would be interesting to see the reaction.

So pleased that the cartoon published today by CE is reaching out to the Muslim community. Just as in the Christian tradition - Jesus said "Father forgive them", so Mohammed is reaching out to say "Forgive them" and by implication "Not in my name".

Don't forget that this idea of no image is not an old tradition in the Muslim faith. Many Muslims are not offended by this image or any other of their prophet.

Alright. This one I do find funny

("Sweetie, I'll be out for five minutes. I'm just going to get the paper")

Love this, jinglbellsfrocks grin

I have always thought Russell Brand talks a lot of sense. He just gets carried away and needs to tone it down a bit.

jinglbellsfrocks Wed 14-Jan-15 10:10:40

perhaps the front page of to-day's issue is not so bad really

Probably not very wise to publish it, but the sentiment is, hopefully, good.

jinglbellsfrocks Wed 14-Jan-15 10:12:32

...But are they admitting they have something to be forgiven for? (thinking too much now hmm)

jinglbellsfrocks Wed 14-Jan-15 10:16:27

Brandt is ridiculous. I too would love to see IS bombed off the face of the earth. Trouble is, of course, innocent bystanders would also be bombed. I have every sympathy with how that presenter on Fox News feels.

Has Brandt got any sensible solutions? He is excellent at knocking other people.

petallus Wed 14-Jan-15 10:18:42

Just watched R Brand. Brilliant! I agree with everything he said. The woman on Fox News was very scary.

jinglbellsfrocks Wed 14-Jan-15 10:34:05

A lot of people feel like that about IS.

Where is Brandt's solutions?

What IS do has nothing to do with Rupert Murdoch, or any other trading "deals" the West go in for. They just want to spread their own brand of Islam. By whatever means.

You can't blame her for being angry.

jinglbellsfrocks Wed 14-Jan-15 10:36:53

I hate jihadists. Doesn't he?

Does he think he's Jesus? confused

TriciaF Wed 14-Jan-15 11:32:26

He certainly sounds as if he wants to save the world - but what's he going to do about it?
Just a windbag imo.

Good sensitive post Rowantree, this reporter shouldnt have to resign, his stance was neither derogatory or accusing, he was doing his job and asking questions. Sadly, as your Father undoubtedly knows, there are many Israelis who interpret any questions or statements of facts about what is happening in Palestine as being anti -Semitic or being a holocaust denier. Surely, if Israel was represented in the march in Paris, demonstrating for a free press and freedom of speech, they should be able to answer questions about Palestine without taking grievous offence. It is ironic given the point of the march.
I too have relatives in US who follow Fox News, and if you ever read any of the illiterate badly spelt comments on Facebook it is terrifying; they are convinced Obama is really a secret Muslim ( what?) and is hell-bent on the destruction of the American way of life. I dont know whether to laugh or cry when i read it, a nation of immigrants telling France that it is their fault for 'letting in' immigrants, and telling Britain that if they armed us all, it would be fine. Terrifying.

Eloethan Wed 14-Jan-15 11:49:53

When these terrible atrocities are committed we always seem to end up in a situation where people start competing with one another as to who hates who the most.

As you are a Christian jingle, I don't think Jesus would have taken the same stance as that venomous woman on Fox News. Sometimes Russell Brand's views might be considered muddled or simplistic but at least he isn't joining in with the current "hate fest".

soontobe Wed 14-Jan-15 12:16:23

It is darn darn difficult at times to Love Thy Neighbour as yourself.

They will get repaid by God accordingly, if they do not repent.

jinglbellsfrocks Wed 14-Jan-15 13:58:43

I have said before Eloethan, I'm a failed Christian. (Jesus came to earth for the likes of me)

Anya Wed 14-Jan-15 14:07:06

I don't think Jesus wanted me for a Sunbeam either.

POGS Wed 14-Jan-15 14:51:19

Eloethan

I don't see a 'hate fest' on the contrary I see millions of people uniting against hate.

I am no fan of Yasmin Alibhai-Brown and put my hands up to finding her annoying at times. However I thought she wrote a good piece in the Daily Mail today 'It's tragic that so many of my fellow British Muslims are turning their backs on freedom'. I don't know how to put up a link.

She has wrote similar articles before on this subject and I whole heartedly agree with her article.

Here you are, POGS

Anya Wed 14-Jan-15 16:03:07

Thank you POGS and janeainsworth

The same worries postulated by this muslim writer were aired on a TV programme this week. Violent extremism is bad enough but the growth of non-violent conservative Islam is just as worrying as it is creating a 'them and us' culture within the muslim communities of the UK. This was also highlighted in the 'Trojan Horse' incident in Birmingham schools and no doubt in other schools that exist within a muslim monoculture.

Nonu Wed 14-Jan-15 16:26:21

I do believe Yasmin is very brave to have written that.

I do most sincerely hope there are no repercussions for her. I tip my hat to her. Pity more don"t feel the same.

soontobe Wed 14-Jan-15 16:36:47

What an excellent piece of journalism.

A bit scary. Lots of fear about, especially for women, but men too.

I didnt realise that their faith didnt mean that they had to wear headscarves. Again, poor women.
