Quite rightly he's being suspended but should the BBC be cancelling episodes of Top Gear?

If a man working in a factory punches a colleague he would probably be sacked but I doubt they'd remove the product he was making from the shelves.

A final warning for what though? For saying things that some people think offensive and others regard as outrageous humour but humour nonetheless? He often trod a fine line between free speech and whatever lies next to free speech (offence, I suppose), and he had been made to apologise for various things he'd said, but had he really done anything worthy of a "final warning"? Some would argue he had not and argue that all the 'charges' against him were trumped up nonsense against his non-political correctness.

I've heard other people say things that I find far more offensive than anything he has said.

We still don't know if he hit anyone.

I see that humour now has it he wasn't drunk, hadn't imbibed any alcohol.

He seems completely unconcerned by all the fuss. He is reported to have said he feels "intensely relaxed" about the whole thing.

I'm still waiting for actual facts. As are the rest of you. Judge not lest....

rumour now has it... not humour

It's up to the BEEB to decide if they want this chap on board or not; and the victim to decide if he wants to press charges if that is appropriate.

Personally I could live without him - I dislike his attitudes. But he thrives on being outrageous - he has made a career of it. You can only keep that up for so long without something giving out.

He sounds from the reports as if he is a bit near the edge at the moment and a few years out of the limelight might help him.

Is JC really as bad as the media portray? Yes he says outrageous things. Yes he's not always politically correct. But is this the real JC or is it a persona he takes on for work?

Are we going to crucify a man just because he says things that are a bit OTT?

The real JC is a patron of Help for Heroes. Someone who doesn't care about the environment wouldn't be bothered about the habitat of birds yet he's an avid bird watcher. He has said several times that he's not against protecting the environment he just can't stand environmentalists who are not realistic about the amount of electricity the world needs and the amount that can be generated using wind turbines.

Do people look for the bad in him? Did you know 'slope' was a racist term until he said it about the bridge they built? I certainly didn't. The bridge was tilted at an angle. It sloped to one side. That's what I thought he was talking about. Do you really think he believes you can only get a job at the BBC if you're a black lesbian? The media can't wait to jump on anything he says and tbh if I was him I'd be outrageous too just for the hell of it.

As for the punching incident, we don't know what happened yet. We only know what the media tell us. One thing though...if I'd been working all day out in the cold I'm not sure I'd have been happy with cold cuts. Whoever was responsible for organising the hotel should have phoned to make sure hot food was still available. I bet JC wasn't the only one to be annoyed.

Loopylou, there is a petition not to have him back, have seen it on FB.

Ana Wed 18-Mar-15 21:43:32

Are any of these petitions really going to make any difference? I doubt it. confused

Flowerofthewest Wed 18-Mar-15 21:47:32

Nope not an iota

thatbags Thu 19-Mar-15 06:51:31

I doubt the petitioons will do any good (or bad).

Another reason to wait and see what the investigation throws up.

vampirequeen Thu 19-Mar-15 07:29:48

It's brilliant free advertising for Top Gear btw.

merlotgran Thu 19-Mar-15 12:17:07

It's not April 1st yet is it? grin

annodomini Thu 19-Mar-15 13:05:49

What a bizarre idea!

vampirequeen Thu 19-Mar-15 15:40:02

Just so wrong in so many ways. I love Top Gear. It's so laddish. Much as I love Stephen Fry he's far too intellectual.

petra Thu 19-Mar-15 16:08:13

I could watch Stephen Fry in anything.

Juliette Thu 19-Mar-15 16:13:25

James Martin.
Loves his cars, loves his food, loves his dog and even better loved his gran. What's not to like?

merlotgran Thu 19-Mar-15 17:10:34

He'd be my choice as well, Juliette and he has a pilot's licence. Is that one up on JC?

Jane10 Thu 19-Mar-15 17:49:51

But he's so boring compared to Jeremy!

grumppa Thu 19-Mar-15 18:04:13

Which James Martin?

JessM Fri 20-Mar-15 12:16:59

You don't find all that contrived, carefully scripted humour boring then Jane10 ?

KatyK Fri 20-Mar-15 12:29:11

I love James Martin! I do agree though that he wouldn't be 'edgy' enough. Jeremy Clarkson makes my skin crawl.

posie Fri 20-Mar-15 12:30:10

Well I find the very contrived, carefully scripted humour boring JessM. As does my car mad son who used to enjoy watching it but now doesn't watch it as it's all so predictable.

Jane10 Fri 20-Mar-15 16:39:03

No I don't jess. As ever it ain't what you say its the way that you say it! He's just plain funny!

Anniebach Fri 20-Mar-15 16:57:15

But is it funny to insult people?

granjura Fri 20-Mar-15 17:26:20

like school lavatorial humour- it might have been funny once- but it is so so predictable and same old, same old- JC is just NOT funny anymore.

But again, I do wish they would get on with it. Either he hit the guy or he didn't.

Mishap Fri 20-Mar-15 17:43:46

I dislike JC's attitudes and the way he conveys them - but a bit of me also feels rather sorry for him. Anyone who feeds on publicity as he does and who gets so overwrought that he finds it hard to control his temper is not a happy bunny. You feel he is on the edge all the time. Maybe some time out is what he needs.

rosequartz Fri 20-Mar-15 18:13:02

Maybe some time out is what he needs

And some professional help - anger management?
I don't think the naughty step will be enough on its own.
