Quite rightly he's being suspended but should the BBC be cancelling episodes of Top Gear?

If a man working in a factory punches a colleague he would probably be sacked but I doubt they'd remove the product he was making from the shelves.

gillybob Thu 12-Mar-15 12:47:24

I'm not sure whether his TV persona is actually an "act" at all though J52 . I tend to agree with AlieOxon he is probably suffering from that awful disease called "celebrity complex" also known more commonly as "Do you know who I am?" syndrome.

Apparently this all started because he stayed drinking in a local pub for so long that the chef of the luxury hotel in which he was staying, had gone home and was unavailble to cook him a steak and (bless him) he was asked to choose something from the........ I almost can't say it......... bbbbbar menu. Poor chap.

Needless to say (one of the effective side effects of the celebrity complex disease) he did get his way and the hotel manager cooked him his much "deserved" steak. Phewww.

Because some of the things he writes through several books. So I think that he believes them.
Excess speed is one of them. There are several others.
Not merely health and safety.

Ceesnan Thu 12-Mar-15 12:55:19

soontobe I'm sorry but I don't quite understand the point you are trying to make, especially about excessive speed - the man reports on fast cars for God's sake, what is he supposed to write about - the colour of the paintwork?!

Nelliemoser Thu 12-Mar-15 13:04:42

Jane10 & ceesnan Just because someone seems nice in private but goes about making nasty bigoted and spiteful remarks in the Media does not mean they are reasonable people. There are a lot of men who appear smart, intelligent and very successful who beat their wives for example.

Clarkson has made far too many sexist, ageist and racist jibes to be acceptable. ie the one I quoted on here about "worrying about his mother When she starts to smell of wee."

Do you really find that amusing? I is that the sort of remark to make in about a named relative in any circumstances, never mind on a television? How would you feel if it was directed at you by name.

His humour is spiteful and nasty in ways other comedy shows are not.
The Radio 4 News Quiz and The Now Show are both highly satirical and very funny but they do not stoop to the nastiness generated by Clarkson. This latest incident just highlights what he is really like.

How would you feel if I made jokes about Jane10 & ceesnan smelling of wee when they get older? Is that remark and many of the others examples posted on here acceptable in your view? It does not matter if they are nade in public or private. Would that get me banned from GN?

annodomini Thu 12-Mar-15 13:17:29

No matter how pleasant and charming he can be in private, ceesnan, the image he projects on screen is downright boorish. He's telling his audience that it's OK to be a boor. Well, in my book it isn't.

Jane10 Thu 12-Mar-15 13:18:02

I fully intend to smell strongly of wee when I get older. Got to have something to look forward to!! ( That is a joke by the way!) I expect that his mother had a sense of humour too!

Ceesnan Thu 12-Mar-15 13:21:30

I never met J C's mother, but from what I gather from the way he spoke about her they had a loving relationship and would assume that the remark in question was made in the same way my sons tease me about what they will do when I go "Doo-lally". Incidentally Nelliemoser if you did make that remark to me I would probably laugh at you smile

Elegran Thu 12-Mar-15 13:24:25

Punching a producer (if that is true) because a busy professional has not waited 3 hours for him to condescend to leave the pub and turn up does not seem the act of a nice man. Would he have waited 3 hours for someone to turn up on set?

soontobe Thu 12-Mar-15 13:24:31

He appears to have promoted drink driving on twitter and seems to be happy with it in at least one of his books.

As Mishap says, his attitude to speed is wrong.

Ceesnan Thu 12-Mar-15 13:26:54

Just out of interest -.how many of us knew, before the fuss and bother last year, that a slope was an insulting term for someone of Asian origin? I know this is slightly off thread, but I really would love to know. i didn't by the way.

thatbags Thu 12-Mar-15 13:29:08

If he hit someone at work he should be appropriately dealt with by his employers but in other respects I agree with jane10. The "smelling of wee" comment and other similar ones are obviously not meant to be taken seriously. It's rather troubling to find that so many people apparently do take such things seriously. You don't even have to think them funny to know that they are not to be taken seriously. The man's a complete piss-taker about anything and everything people get their knickers in a twist about. One doesn't have to like him or his piss-taking to understand that piss-takers have a useful role in society.

thatbags Thu 12-Mar-15 13:31:12

I didn't either, ceesnan. The fuss about the word slope struck me at the time as coming from someone(s) who were simply looking for something to complain about and to take offence at.

Anya Thu 12-Mar-15 13:35:49

What matters is if JC did know what 'slope' meant.

merlotgran Thu 12-Mar-15 13:36:45

It seems there is always a trigger happy person at the ready to report whenever Jeremy Clarkson is in the wrong. The knives are always out it seems and yet we still don't know if he actually punched the producer who didn't make a formal complaint.

Elegran Thu 12-Mar-15 13:37:17

Whatever Clarkson's private personality (and many psychopaths have been said to be charming and charismatic) his very public persona is of a loudmouthed buffoon who advocates breaking the speed limit, smashing up vehicles and insulting people who can't defend thenselves.

Alf Garnet was a created character, whose pronouncements were highly non-PC. Those who saw that it was all as satire were not tempted to repeat them in real life, but there were still a large number of wallies who thought it an example to be copied.

thatbags Thu 12-Mar-15 13:37:18

Not necessarily. It also has the meaning he used it for, namely a slope in the road or bridge. I live on a slope and I expect other gransnetters do too.

thatbags Thu 12-Mar-15 13:38:06

I was answering anya's post.

thatbags Thu 12-Mar-15 13:40:07

Does he actually advocate breaking speed limits? Or do people just interpret what he says about speed limits as an excuse to break them? There's a difference. I've heard him talking about speed limits a few times and I wouldn't call what I heard him say "advocating" breaking speed limits. I'd call it making an argument against speed limits. There's a difference.

Anya Thu 12-Mar-15 13:40:42

Is that how he used the term bags?

thatbags Thu 12-Mar-15 13:40:54

Whether I agree with his argument about speed limits is irrelevant, by the way.

thatbags Thu 12-Mar-15 13:41:31

I saw some footage, anya, after the furore, and yes, he was talking about a sloping road surface.

thatbags Thu 12-Mar-15 13:42:09

There happened to be a person (male, I think) on the sloping road surface at the time, if I remember correctly.

Anya Thu 12-Mar-15 13:43:17

Well I can't see what the fuss was about if that was the case Bags confused

thatbags Thu 12-Mar-15 13:44:18

So there you are, anya. You have implied from your question that you haven't seen actual evidence of the slope 'insult' and yet you appear to condemn the use of the word.

merlot's last comment suggests to me that this is what people are doing about the latest JC story.

thatbags Thu 12-Mar-15 13:45:18

All the fuss is about people telling everyone how awful a person Jeremy Clarkson is. A lot of people seem to like doing that.
