Quite rightly he's being suspended but should the BBC be cancelling episodes of Top Gear?

If a man working in a factory punches a colleague he would probably be sacked but I doubt they'd remove the product he was making from the shelves.

daffydil Thu 12-Mar-15 09:26:39

I was just about to add a post on the same lines a lam64. Let's suppose that David Cameron was in a restaurant and a customer punched a waiter over some trifling incident. Would DC have been so indulgent? He has condoned violence simply because Clarkson is 'a constituent and a friend'.

You can enter any name/email/postcode you wish, they can be fake - I suspect this is fake - still counts as a vote.

J52 Thu 12-Mar-15 09:36:36

I understand that his contract is due for renewal soon. Am I being cynical; as they say there is no such thing as bad publicity.

If he's sacked by the Beeb, then I'm sure an independent channel will reinvent him!

Such good PR!

For the record, I cannot stand the man! x

Sorry Grans but Jeremy Clarkson makes me laugh. Probably for all the wrong reasons but I can't help it. I've always thought, having read his books, that the "jezza" character he adopts on Top Gear is almost put on for the cameras. That's showbiz. I bet he's really cross with himself at having got himself into another fine mess. He's an awfy laddy but he shouldn't have lifted his hands to anyone. Idiot!

annodomini Thu 12-Mar-15 09:39:39

durhamjen - very peculiar. I just had another look at the 38 Degrees petition and it's there on the right hand side of the page. At least it's there on my laptop!

rosequartz Thu 12-Mar-15 09:42:55

The 'jezza' character perhaps did start as something 'put on' for the cameras but if so he has grown into it - arrogant, unpleasant and feeling that he is untouchable. Rather a monster in fact.

soontobe Thu 12-Mar-15 09:43:09

He used to make me laugh too. But I came to the conclusion that he means some of what he says.

Anniebach Thu 12-Mar-15 09:44:06

Clarkson is not a lad, he is nearing sixty. If a fifty six year old man working in B & Q hit a manager because he didn't like the canteen food would this be acceptable? He is a middle class Bernard Manning , more offensive than funny

soontobe Thu 12-Mar-15 09:46:27

Agreed rosequartz.
And I really dont think that a Prime Minister should be, publically at least, standing up for a friend that misbehaves.
Having written that, what am I saying? He shouldnt be pulling strings, for something like this [assuming Clarkson has done it], behind the scenes either[if Cameron is].

merlotgran Thu 12-Mar-15 09:52:02

Did he actually hit the man?

Nothing's been confirmed has it?

He used to be funny but he has now made himself so unpopular that I doubt a move to ITV will give him any more freedom to shoot his mouth off. His career will depend on which advertisers are prepared to support his behaviour.

Nelliemoser Thu 12-Mar-15 09:53:06

Daffydill and Iam64 I too am shocked at DCs lack of condemnation of JC's behaviour. As Iam64 says, he also supported Rebekkah Brookes.

He should be more careful who he claims as friends if he values his reputation.
Daffydill also mentioned JC being regarded "'as constituent and a friend'; we should probably add and a wealthy Tory party supporter as well.

Jane10 Thu 12-Mar-15 09:59:32

I feel like that Dick Emery character - the one who used to say "you are awful but I like you"! I warmed to him when I read that he always preferred to be seated next to older plumper women at dinner parties as they were always more interesting than the skinny glamour pusses. He also always writes endearingly about his children. As I said -he's been an idiot. Hope he's not gone too far this time

KatyK Thu 12-Mar-15 10:27:38

The press (well the Daily Mail) are now coming out on his side, saying that the BBC want him out because he is 'too male and too white' confused

hildajenniJ Thu 12-Mar-15 10:39:43

Well, I've just signed the petition to have him sacked!!!

Teetime Thu 12-Mar-15 10:53:02

I'm late to this debate but just to add in my view as I said on Facebook its about time this misogynistic, chauvinistic racist was sacked. I saw him and the other idiot driving two Peugots into the wall of a house the other day as they didn't think much of Peugot cars- outrageous. angry

AlieOxon Thu 12-Mar-15 11:15:14

I am bumping the link to petition as I had to search for it! Hope this works..

This is the link to the 38 Degrees petition

AlieOxon Thu 12-Mar-15 11:17:43

No, it didn't...I have signed - can someone resurrect the link?

grumppa Thu 12-Mar-15 11:20:32

There seems to be congestion on the sense of humour bypass.

Jane10 Thu 12-Mar-15 11:25:58

Too true grumpa. I wonder how many posters here actually watch Top Gear. Those that do have more of an understanding of the tongue in cheek nature of it. However sign away everyone if you think it'll make the slightest difference!

Mishap Thu 12-Mar-15 11:36:51

The point for me is that young men are dangerous in cars and need to be encouraged to take them seriously as potential killers. They are already fired up with more than enough testosterone - they need no encouragement from this irresponsible nitwit. Until we change attitudes to cars the carnage will go on.

I think it is a sad reflection on our broadcast media that this chap has been given airtime at all - talk about dumbing down.

AlieOxon Thu 12-Mar-15 11:39:36

Found it. I first saw the man on 'who do you think you are'.
Yuk.
I think he is suffering from the celebrity complex, sometimes called Savile Syndrome (not necessarily sex) - just the idea that because he is a celebrity he can do what he likes....

Ceesnan Thu 12-Mar-15 11:48:02

I was going to keep away from this thread as I happen to know the family well, and I am obviously not going to condone an attack on one of his colleagues (if, indeed, that is what happened). What I will say, however, is that on the many occassions I have been in his company he has never been anything but kind, generous and a delight to be with. By the way, how many of us have never, at some time, ' poured scorn' on Health and Safety?

J52 Thu 12-Mar-15 12:23:41

If people in the news are courteous, polite and respectful in real life; then I find it even more amazing what they will do for money!

soontobe Thu 12-Mar-15 12:39:32

Have you read his books Ceesnan?

Ceesnan Thu 12-Mar-15 12:42:32

I've read some of them - why do you ask?
