Thought I would post this up for those of us who are hoping for the stamina to stay up!

Granny twice sums it up. As for proportional voting, I'm all for it, especially after the results in England.

BTW I did not have a Scottish vote, in case anyone was wondering. x

mollie65 Fri 08-May-15 07:56:39

excellent result (no I am not a selfish anti-labour voter) smile
admit it - if things had gone in your favour (as they did in 1997) you would all be crowing at how wonderful it is. (addressing the left-leaning majority on here)

No. They have won because Labour is useless and (shock, horror, no one really cares that much about the Welfare state because it is always in a mess).

rosesarered Fri 08-May-15 07:57:34

I realise this result won't please many of you on this thread, but after all, the British people have spoken, so it is what they want.

Soutra Fri 08-May-15 07:57:43

Well, didn't see that coming. One thing Nick Robinson pointed out this morning was the anomaly of our 'first past the post' system as illustrated by the fact that in terms of actual votes, the SNP and UKIP have achieved very similar numbers, UKIP has 1 seat, the SNP have over 50. My sympathies do not lie with either party so I am not saying one is fairer than the other but it is clear there would be a different outcome nationally if the densely populated urban areas dictated what happens right across the country.

It is strange that Scotland voted against independence in last year's referendum, but the SNP have swept the board, bar Orkney and Shetland, in Scotland. Also interesting to see how London has bucked the trend and swung very much to Labour, yet voted in a Conservative mayor last time around.

Final observation, the Lib Dems have been virtually wiped out particularly in England by the Conservatives with whom Nick Clegg chose to form a coalition. It looks as if that was a suicidal decision for the party and IMHO Clegg should go for selling his soul and that of his party.

Falconbird Fri 08-May-15 07:58:47

The Tories ate the Lib Dems alive and spat out the bones. Only two years Durhamjen - a small consolation but a glimmer of hope I guess.

durhamjen Fri 08-May-15 08:00:46

Yes, Iam. I put a link on earlier to a DM article listing the best 50 seats to vote tactically to keep Labour out.
It hasn't always worked because at least five of them have gone to Labour, 3 from LD and two from conservatives.

rosesarered Fri 08-May-15 08:01:26

the SNP just cleared the board in Scotland, Labour were nowhere.I think in a few years you will find Scotland going it alone, and for us, here in the rest of the UK maybe this is the best thing.

whitewave Fri 08-May-15 08:01:42

I think that the next parliamentary term may see huge changes.

The SNP will of course push for independence, and this government could lose the UK.

We then have the EU referendum and we could be out of Europe.

The NHS will look very different in 5 years time with effectively it being contracted out to the private provider.

There are to be no tax rises - so the rich can rest easy, as nothing else the government does will touch them.

The poor will grow as will inequality - the sort of society I was hoping never to see.

State schools as we know them will no longer exist -

The list goes on and on.

The good news? We won Hove grin

durhamjen Fri 08-May-15 08:01:44

Perhaps the North East should join the SNP.

durhamjen Fri 08-May-15 08:03:37

Won Cambridge and the Wirral from the conservatives, too. Esther McVey has gone, but says she'll be back.

jo1book Fri 08-May-15 08:08:06

Oh my God. Get real. Big Business rules the World and the Tories won because "It's the Economy, Stupid".

durhamjen Fri 08-May-15 08:11:39

Caroline Lucas got an increased majority.
We are real, jo1book. We need some small bits of comfort, and you are being mean to deny us.

Scooter58 Fri 08-May-15 08:15:23

gillybob,I for one certainly did not vote for SNP because I hate England and resent the very suggestion that I might have.

FarNorth Fri 08-May-15 08:15:40

GrannyTwice, that sounds like a fair assessment.
jo1book, I expect you are a typical Tory voter, thinking no one is real but yourself and selfish big business interests.

Jane10 Fri 08-May-15 08:20:03

That's nasty and unnecessary farnorth. There have always been many grans who quietly supported the party who had the best economic policies. Just because they don't go on about it doesn't mean they aren't there. Btw I have no faith at all in SNP grasp of business and how that translates into jobs and funding for benefits.

POGS Fri 08-May-15 08:20:42

Well that's ED BALLS gone!

jo1book Fri 08-May-15 08:21:45

No, just pragmatic. Labour is so last century. You need better people leading you for a start. I'd love to see David Milliband's face this morning! You need another "New Labour" movement with another Blair type; you know it's the only way. Please don't get another Geek!
Also, may I congratulate all left wingers on this forum for ensuring a Tory vote.

thatbags Fri 08-May-15 08:22:02

jane10 0749. I'm thinking the same as you re proportional representation.

Years back, my first husband, a Scot and a mathematician, always voted Liberal because that was the only party to support proportional representation, which he felt was the only fair system. What we have now is not as democratic as it could be by a ling chalk.

thatbags Fri 08-May-15 08:23:40

make that long. Heather has nothing to do with it!

thatbags Fri 08-May-15 08:25:24

jane10, likewise your post at 0820. I fear for Scotland's economic prospects under the SNP.

nightowl Fri 08-May-15 08:26:57

I suppose the 'best economic policies' are always open to interpretation though Jane10. Best for whom? And don't say the country. The country is made up of the people who live in it.

rosesarered Fri 08-May-15 08:29:33

woW, Ed Balls gone? Who was it that said "a week in politics is a long time"It seems a night in politics is a long time too.
the polls got it very wrong this time.
I suppose if you are left wing then you will be devastated. There will be another election along in five years though!

thatbags Fri 08-May-15 08:29:43

But the predominant party in Scotland now only represents half the people who live in it. Hey ho. Time will tell.
