When David Cameron used the word 'swarm' in relation the the migrants in Calais.
The media are doing their best to make me think that I should be. I keep thinking about it, and I'm not.

No one has accused soontobe of being racist. She accused others of being so.

Not reading this lot!

We are going to avoid any kind of figurative language from now on. Goodbye metaphor, farewell simile. They upset people who think in concrete.

petra Fri 31-Jul-15 22:38:23

If I were to explain 'on thread' it would be deleted.

lily, perfect!

Lilygran Set it to music.

Goodbye metaphor, farewell simile,
It's a long, long way to oxymoron,
So literal we'll be.

There are clearly people who think that, if for example a person has been bullied, and that person speaks out about it, then that person is being intolerant.
Ditto any other type of victim you can think of.

thatbags Sat 01-Aug-15 07:30:16

Intolerance of bullying is fine. That's not the sort of intolerance we were talking about. I think you are deliberately putting wrong interpretations onto things, soon. You are thinking in concrete, so to speak. Soften up and start thinking in putty. It will help your world view and your people view enormously.

soontobe Sat 01-Aug-15 07:30:35

They use many words to try and hide what they think.

thatbags Sat 01-Aug-15 07:31:04

Blast! I've broken lily's brilliant rule already! No hope for me then grin

thatbags Sat 01-Aug-15 07:32:14

And some people use many words to poke out what isn't there in other people's words.

Are you fond of poetry, soon?

soontobe Sat 01-Aug-15 07:32:26

Then please explain a lot better what you did mean.
In words that are easily understandable.

soontobe Sat 01-Aug-15 07:33:51

I dont like poetry much.

Are you going to keep to the subject?

thatbags Sat 01-Aug-15 07:34:40

Even the divide between tolerance and intolerance is not like a line between black and white. Intolerance of actual racism or bullying is fine. Intolerance of figurative speech (such as the thread is about) is not fine.

thatbags Sat 01-Aug-15 07:35:36

Poetry is part of the subject. Poetry speaks in metaphor and simile, which you don't seem to understand. I suggest you try to begin to understand it.

thatbags Sat 01-Aug-15 07:35:58

Which bit do you want me to explain again?

soontobe Sat 01-Aug-15 07:36:09

You dont have to fully and easily explain of course.

But I cant think of any examples that fit the sentence that you said.

thatbags Sat 01-Aug-15 07:37:24

Which sentence?

Anya Sat 01-Aug-15 07:47:55

S2B you are fighting above your weight, I'd back off if I were you.

soontobe Sat 01-Aug-15 07:49:24

Intolerance of actual racism or bullying is fine

Good. And there needs to be a lot of intolerance of other stuff too.

You did not speak figuratively before. You either meant your original words, or didnt think them through properly, or something else.

Hopefully we can leave it at that now.

I dont propose to get drawn into words used by people on gransnet for whatever reason they can get used on here for.

soontobe Sat 01-Aug-15 07:50:51

Who are thatbags and her friends Anya? The mafia?

soontobe Sat 01-Aug-15 07:54:29

What weight?

Riverwalk Sat 01-Aug-15 07:55:29

In the main, swarm is used to describe a group of people in a derogatory or negative sense. You wouldn't say a swarm of children attended your grandchild's party or older people were swarming the grounds of Chatsworth would you?

But you would say a swarm of gatecrashers turned up, or protesters swarmed the grounds.

I thought it an unkind use of words aimed at desperate people, many of them genuine war refugees from Syria.

soontobe Sat 01-Aug-15 07:55:38

Words again. I will zip my mouth.

soontobe Sat 01-Aug-15 07:56:35

x post.
