I think Corbyn will be a great opposition leader for three years, and we will be going through this all over again leading up to 2020.

Some Tories are Thatcherites, some Labour supporters will feel empathy with Communism, but they are the extremes.

I don't think that saying that Labour supporters are communists - including as has been said by posters on here that some of the GN posters are communists - is in anyway the same as saying some Conservative supporters are Thatcherites, Anniebach.

It would be closer to say that some Conservatives are fascist. Communism by its very structure anti-democratic and I have heard nothing from Jeremy Corbyn to show that he is anti-democratic. Discussing whether someone else is a true Corbyn supporter if they are or are not communist and deciding that they are or are not is a conceit showing the person appending this label to other posters believes they know the various Corbyn supporters minds better than the person does themselves. It really is just childish name calling.

There are people on the extreme of the main parties who do want this sort of government - they are right and therefore nothing must stop them putting there views into action but deciding this of GN members, who have never claimed this for themselves, is incredibly arrogant and seems to be just another part of the thread spoiling gangs methods.

I have a strong feeling that if left of centre supporters started bandying around the word fascist in relationship to other posters there would be an outcry as there should be when those who have no interest in a left wing government start deciding who is any form of communist on here.

Certainly getting back to the welfare state which has existed for much of the last century (really?) - my maths is not that great but even I can work out that the Welfare state did not exist more than 70 years ago - and then not envisaged as it exists today. Not the intention of the Beveridge Report imo. A return to the concensus that existed for much of the last century would mean reining it back considerably.

I am laughing (well, nearly) at the admonishment to non-Labour supporters for de-railing a thread!

Please could Labour supporters who do not wish comments, questions or input of ideas on one of 'their' threads please make it very clear in the OP . The rest of us of whatever persuasion can then trundle off to the gulag.
Perhaps they could then afford other OPs the same courtesy and not attempt to 'take over' other threads which start fairly innocuously but end up as political arguments.

I have started a thread about owning threads and diversions, partly because of this thread.

There hasnt been anything from gransnet HQ yet, but most people think that no ones owns a thread except the site owners, and diversions are always going to happen.

GNHQ are on the Mumsnet thread drinking gin and handing out blankets.

It sounds like an attempt at supression of political debate on GN by supporters of JC .....

Communism and fascism are not very far apart. Both are authoritarian, not democratic. I dislike both.

The north of the country (or countries if you prefer) that held a general election recently that returned a lot of SNP members for the Westminster parliament (you know, that one in England that serves Scotland and Wales as well) is Scotland. The other north is the north of England. I'm sorry if this wasn't clear from my recent post. Only mentioned it because whoever mentioned the north going all Ukip on us had apparently forgotten about Scotland.

My son wrote an article for The Guardian just before the last election about the reasons why he was leaving the Labour Party. It concluded with the words "I always knew that as I grew older my views might move to the right. I didn't think it would be the Labour party doing it."-paraphrased can't remember exact words. Perhaps Boothroyd and others are just displaying their age and Corbyn will usher in a new young, bunch of left-wing politicians with real ideals and beliefs. If so I will be there cheering them on.

Pollly Toynby seems to think that it is a foregone conclusion that JC will win. Not that she agrees with him.
Given that the IMF and many other countries and economists agree with the main thrust of JCs arguments I will be interested in how the other 3 candidates will reconcile their opposition to his economic stance, which argues strongly for a mixed CAPITALIST economy ( for the benefit of those who don't seem to get it), and what they see as the way forward. Following an extreme austerity programme as the Tories have been doing for the past ,5 years was clearly rejected by the vast majority of the British people,

Gin and blankets? Is this a new benefit bought in by social reformers? If so, I'm all for it.

By the way, I am cultivating my inner patroniser because of something (funny with hindsight but groanish at the time) that happened between me and DH the other day. He asked me if I'd moved his wallet. I said yes, I'd taken it out of his jacket pocket, removed all the receipts so I could check over our joint credit card bill (which is in my name; he's an add-on), and then I'd put it back in the same jacket pocket.

He then started to tell me that he'd left it on the wee chest of drawers (chester!) that we keep gloves and crampons in. I said I didn't need to know what he'd done with his wallet; he needed to know what I'd done with it, which I'd told him. He then carried on about having left it... etc, etc.

I need to cultivate my "Yes, dear" responses.
