Labour Leadership watch

I thought, as the message says "start a new thread" that I should.

A quote from an article by Jeremy Corby to start this thread off.

"Ours is a democratic socialist party. Nearly 300,000 people now have that on the back of their Labour Party membership card. Our members and supporters have ideas, experience and knowledge that are a valuable resource - and none more so than our local councillors; often, the most innovative ideas are delivered in local government. Shadow minister and policy advisers do not have a monopoly on wisdom, so the must interact with party members and supporters. By making policy together, we make better policy"

and a little further on ...

"I stood in this campaign to open up a debate, to engage new people and to rebuild our party as the movement it needs to be. That is not just an approach for the leadership election but one to win in 2020."

So a watered down version of such extreme policies will not be acceptable to those looking for a fairer and more equal society. This of course (for the benefit of those who don't get it) does not mean equal financially.

As you were. Have some gin.

thatbags Tue 25-Aug-15 10:38:47

Sorry, ww, didn't mean to "imbertrupt" you, as Minibags used to say.

whitewave Tue 25-Aug-15 10:42:09

No problemsmile

POGS Tue 25-Aug-15 10:43:36

WW 0718

'Pogs where have I said I want a different economic system.'

I apologise I didn't realize you were happy with the status quo . I thought the main reason to vote for Corbyn was to have a different system of economics to what we have.

AB

We will have to agree to disagree as I gave what I thought was a valid explaination as to why Betty Boothroyd sits as a Cross Bencher. Interested to know if Michael Martin is a hypoicrite or has 'abandoned ' labour as he accepted a life peerage and sits on the Cross Benches due to the same Lords convention/protocol ?

whitewave Tue 25-Aug-15 10:56:45

Dear oh dear! Nothi

Anniebach Tue 25-Aug-15 10:57:07

Michael Martin has not bounced onto tv to air his views on the party leadership contestants POGS. Boothrhoyd has.

whitewave Tue 25-Aug-15 10:59:48

Nothing in the way of an explanation seems to get through to you. I think that you are doing it quite deliberately for the sake of argument so I shall bow out gracefully.

Most policies look like they get "clearly rejected by the vast majority of the British people"
as it is a first past the post system.

Anya Tue 25-Aug-15 11:18:11

I'd offer you a gin WW but bags has supped it all.

durhamjen Tue 25-Aug-15 11:20:00

If the first past the post gets over fifty per cent, then it is the will of the majority of whoever votes.

whitewave Tue 25-Aug-15 11:21:24

No problem anya hope to have one or two on my hols just coming upsmile.

Anya Tue 25-Aug-15 11:31:07

grin

soontobe Tue 25-Aug-15 11:33:34

I dont understand your post durhamjen.

Just because someone votes for one party, does not mean that they dont agree with some policies of a different party.

Also there are people who dont vote, who may agree with austerity or whatever.

I could have done with carrying on my post.

Most policies look like they get clearly rejected by the vast majority of the British people is not likely to be correct.
Non voters, voters form other parties, people who chose not to vote on a particular day etc etc can all make that statement wrong.

Eloethan Tue 25-Aug-15 11:50:47

In the book highly respected and meticulously researched book "The Spirit Level", the authors demonstrate that most of the major health and social problems found in the rich countries of the world are more common in unequal societies.

I don't understand why ordinary people feel so threatened by the idea of a fairer society where extremes of wealth and poverty are gradually levelled out. That is not to say that there will be absolute equality but at least that the system is not geared to always favour those who already have great wealth. The world and its resources - including "human resources" - should not be commandeered by one small group of people purely for their own benefit and to the detriment of the majority who are actually instrumental in producing the wealth.

When people have to resort to sarcasm and name calling, such as referring to anyone with views that they find unpalatable as "Loony Left" that suggests to me not that they have a sense of humour but that they either can't, or can't be bothered, to argue their case in a reasoned and respectful way.

whitewave Tue 25-Aug-15 11:55:10

Social democracy has a long and respectable history, and let's start by giving ourselves an identifiable ideology so that those in any doubt can understand where our arguments stem from.

thatbags Tue 25-Aug-15 12:10:39

I doubt if anyone feels threatened by a fairer society. I think the disagreement lies in how that is to be achieved. One doesn't have to be a Corbyn supporter to believe that greater fairness in society is a good thing and something to keep working towards.

I'm believe that Betty Boothroyd is a sincere woman who knows what she's doing and is in favour of a fairer society. I'm willing to give her the benefit of the doubt anyhow. I don't think anything she has done so far has proved otherwise.

Anniebach Tue 25-Aug-15 12:23:37

The attacks of loony left , communist, Marxist are so old hat , so daily mail.

I am a Christian and a socialist , how can I be Marxist ? I am a socialist because the principles of socialism follow the teachings of Christ, they cannot be separated . How can a Christian vote for Cameron who supported apartheid ? not possible

Anniebach Tue 25-Aug-15 12:26:17

The Tories do not believe in a fairer society if they did they would work for one

whitewave Tue 25-Aug-15 12:33:05

thatbags of course you don't have to be a Corbyn supporter but given that we as LP members have a decision to make it is natural for us to discuss who would most likely give us that sort of society.

Anya Tue 25-Aug-15 12:45:22

Daily Mail Anniebach

rosesarered Tue 25-Aug-15 12:52:11

I think I may like Socialism more if it had a better and stylish dress sense. And perhaps a sense of humour.
