Bugger it that's the next election lost.

Eloethan Thu 17-Sept-15 19:28:24

Frankly, soontobe I don't know what you're talking about. I am anti- nuclear weapons and in engaging in conflicts when our involvement will do (and has done) more harm than good.

In in a country that professes itself to be a modern demoracy, the entrenchment of hereditary privilege, as personified by the royal family, is, I feel, incongruent. I would therefore be happy to see a Republic but obviously accept that that is unlikely to happen in the foreseeable future.

Because you disagree with JC's views re these matters does not entitle you to call him, or me, or anyone else anti-British.

I don't know whether Harold Wilson was pro-monarchy or not - I'd guess he was because that was the received wisdom of the time. Disliking the institution of monarchy doesn't mean that you have to dislike the person or wish them harm.

I also saw Andrew Neil interviewing Richard Murphy on the Daily Politics and very infuriating it was too. AN was obnoxious - hardly letting his interviewee finish a sentence and shouting over him throughout. I was surprised how cool Richard Murphy remained and I was gratified to see AN getting redder and redder in the face because he just could not rattle him.

WowMarmark - you sound very overwrought - what brought that on?

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 17-Sept-15 19:59:21

That was stupid comment ( Marmark1 nbeing overwrought) As bad as that old worn out chestnut, 'calm down dear' hmm

Sounds bitchy.

Tegan Thu 17-Sept-15 20:21:09

Marmark is speaking for 'most of us poor genuine working class' and it's a huge responsibility and quite stressful....

thatbags Thu 17-Sept-15 20:22:36

Because you disagree with JC's views re these matters does not entitle you to call him, or me, or anyone else anti-British.

Actually, eloethan, I think it does if that's what she thinks. #gotmyfreespeechhatonagain.

And you're entitled to say that what she thinks is bollocks.

thatbags Thu 17-Sept-15 20:23:06

Should you wish to, of course.

rosequartz Thu 17-Sept-15 20:28:37

I think people are just pondering and trying to make their minds up. Or they may have grave reservations about JBC's intentions.

It doesn't mean that those who already have made up their minds that Jeremy is the saviour of Great Britain should be trying to ridicule and suppress the views of those who disagree.

That is what happens in a communist or fascist state, and I am sure none of us would wish for that, would we.

Ana Thu 17-Sept-15 20:38:11

Perish the thought!

Marmark1 Thu 17-Sept-15 22:26:08

It's called plain speaking, genuine ,truth and honesty,Anything you recognise yet?

I think Richard Murphy stood his ground very well towards the end.

durhamjen Thu 17-Sept-15 22:45:35

"Did it look like as much fun as I felt it to be?"

Comment by Murphy.

Gracesgran Thu 17-Sept-15 23:40:03

It was an appalling performance by Andrew Neil Jen but it is always nice to know you are not alone in thinking that. It is more of this sense of entitlement that we get from those in power or who think they have power. Silly man.

Eloethan Thu 17-Sept-15 23:44:05

This, from Marmark1 sounds pretty aggressive to me and I think my response was fairly mild by comparison:

^I will tell you how SOME people make a success of their lives,it's certainly not by sitting on their assess saying poor me ,I need and deserve help.
Not everyone was born with a silver spoon,or even well off, with some its shear hard work and dedication. And believe me,most of us poor genuine working class wouldn't appreciate anyone's patronising, thank you very much.^

And that last remark from Marmark1 wasn't exactly polite was it.

Who is ridiculing or trying to suppress the view of others? Stating that someone should agree with a government's defence programme and should be in support of a monarchy in order to prove their allegiance to Britain seems to me very much like suppressing the views of others.

Gracesgran Thu 17-Sept-15 23:48:54

This is interesting but more interesting that they are writing for papers like the Financial Times rather than letting the media set the agenda.

AN was simply dreadful and I think his colleague was uncomfortable with his behaviour too. He is so full of his own self importance to the point of appearing ridiculous. I can only guess Richard Murphy had a good idea of what he was in for and that made him determined not to stoop to AN's level.

durhamjen Thu 17-Sept-15 23:58:15

I watched Question Time with John McDonnell, and was very impressed by his sincerity.

Eloethan Fri 18-Sept-15 00:25:09

Question Time was certainly more lively than usual. I enjoyed all the contributions of the panel apart from Elizabeth Truss who did what many politicians do - just keep talking around the subject rather than answer a question properly.

durhamjen Fri 18-Sept-15 00:54:17

She probably had an ear piece in from head office, Eloethan, telling her to keep on message. It's a shame lots of MPs do not seem to be able, or are not allowed, to think for themselves.
The Telegraph journalist spouted his usual, but then he always does. I usually watch the papers on BBC news channel, except when he's on. I do not mind other right wing journalists on there discussing the news; just him.

WilmaKnickersfit Fri 18-Sept-15 02:41:59

We will be watching QT on iPlayer this week. The reports of his apologies leave no doubt about what he said, although he wouldn't get far in his new job if he didn't apologise. I saw a clip of the Thatcher comment and it did seem like a stupid, but unplanned thing to say. Will be interested to see how he comes over on QT.

Jeremy Corbyn and the Two Lefts: the anti-idealism of the blinkered idealists by Paul Berman. Very good essay.

thatbags Fri 18-Sept-15 06:30:31

Or, why some of us are uncomfortable with JC as leader of the Labour Party.

Anya Fri 18-Sept-15 08:45:14

Interesting phrase used in that link 'yielding to the pleasures of hatred' - very thought provoking.

whitewave Fri 18-Sept-15 08:46:10

What an odd essay?!

Marmark1 Fri 18-Sept-15 09:16:49

Your response has confused me now,
Remember I'm just a Genuine working class sole,it won't take much.
Respect to you.

whitewave Fri 18-Sept-15 09:41:10

marmark you need to say to whom you are talking as it does get confusing otherwise.wink

rosequartz Fri 18-Sept-15 09:45:31

Marmark's post, as quoted and therefore taken out of context, sounded more defensive than aggressive to me.
