Bugger it that's the next election lost.

Anne58 Sun 13-Sept-15 14:27:31

Couldn't they have found someone to make the announcements who could actually pronounce the word "thousand" correctly?

soontobe Sun 13-Sept-15 14:30:12

If he had been willing to bend, he wouldnt have voted against his own party 500 times.

Going forward on gransnet Anniebach, now might be as good a time as any, to say that I think we understand words to mean different things sometimes. Not saying that my understanding is always the right one, it probably isnt all of the time. In this instance for example, honour probably means quite a different thing to me than what it means to you.

Anniebach Sun 13-Sept-15 14:31:39

So anyone in a job should not carry out their duties if they fail to pronounce a word correctly! We managed with a king who had far bigger speech problems than a person with an accent

soontobe Sun 13-Sept-15 14:31:40

I have probably missed it somewhere along the way, but why is JC only going to do 1 in 5 PMQ's?

rosesarered Sun 13-Sept-15 14:33:19

yes, Phoenix, but that would no doubt have been considered an elite thing to do, someone who sounds like a docker is so much more authentic.

Anniebach Sun 13-Sept-15 14:33:40

soon,i think it obvious many words have different meanings to you and I

rosesarered Sun 13-Sept-15 14:35:17

Soontobe, probably because he hates confrontations and isn't any good at them.

Anne58 Sun 13-Sept-15 14:38:47

I don't think saying "fousand" instead of "thousand" has anything to do with an accent!

soontobe Sun 13-Sept-15 14:39:49

Anniebach - thanks.

rosesarered - oh. Oh.

Anniebach Sun 13-Sept-15 14:42:13

A docker is a more authentic Labour Party member rosesarered, mmmmmm

Anniebach Sun 13-Sept-15 14:44:42

And not being unable to pronounce a word does not mean a man should not hold a position Phoenix

rosesarered Sun 13-Sept-15 14:47:48

that would depend on the position, surely?

Anniebach Sun 13-Sept-15 15:04:39

Yes and an elected chairman is just that - elected , does it matter that a person has a cockney accent or Yorkshire accent if they can do the job they were elected to do. Jim is not in a job where he makes speeches or pops up on telly as a presenter, I think criticising a persons accent is scraping the bottom of the barrel, but it makes some happy, I just think it pathetic and so petty

Anne58 Sun 13-Sept-15 15:05:00

Oh for heavens sake!hmm

Anniebach Sun 13-Sept-15 15:07:29

Phoenix , I assume you like me are not English and sometimes have difficulty in understanding some English accents , but I can accept it is that persons accent,

Gracesgran Sun 13-Sept-15 15:50:58

I know this is a long way back but Ceesnan says:

Oh dear, have just finished a phone call with my sister who has declared that JC would "probably have declared Hitler to be an okay sort of bloke, put him on trial and sorted out legal aid for him". Summed up quite nicely I think!

If Hitler had survived that is exactly what would have been done, by the Allies, who went to a great deal of trouble to ensure justice was seen to be done. Once found guilty, he would have been hanged. "Not only must Justice be done; it must also be seen to be done."

What is your sister's problem with that.

Anniebach Sun 13-Sept-15 15:57:54

Well said Gracesgran ,

Anne58 Sun 13-Sept-15 16:04:33

Anniebach I am English, with Welsh ancestry, incidentally, but I still don't think it is an accent thing to say "fousand"!

Ceesnan Sun 13-Sept-15 16:06:48

Erm, don't think my sister actually is the one with the problem Gracesgran

trisher Sun 13-Sept-15 16:10:36

Cockneys are always said to be unable to pronounce "th". The 2 famous sayings being
Firty fousand feathers on a frush
and
firty free miles to Soufend
so maybe it is an accent. But it could also be part of this posh thing to try to sound working class

Gracesgran Sun 13-Sept-15 16:13:47

Of course pronouncing "th" as "f" is an accent fing phoenix or perhaps you could call it a dialect fing but it is still somefing that I am amazed someone would criticise.

Gracesgran Sun 13-Sept-15 16:15:21

So what would she have expected to happen to a living Hitler Ceesnan?

Gracesgran Sun 13-Sept-15 16:18:25

Well said Gracesgran

Obviously not Annie as according to Ceesnan I am the one with the problem for expecting justice to be seen to be done. shock

Anniebach Sun 13-Sept-15 16:20:40

Really Phoenix ? I have heard cockneys say it , I doubt ancestry affects a persons accent, I have a Welsh accent because born and always lived in Wales. I think you were unkind to pick up on one word , it was petty sorry

Anne58 Sun 13-Sept-15 16:23:38

Are you sure it shouldn't actually be "somefink" , Graces? (Tongue in cheek emoticon)
