As jinglbellsfrocks had the last word in the last thread about Jermy Corbyn, I am starting a new one.

Do you think that the election of Jeremy Corbyn has scuppered Labour's chances of winning the next election or has it revitalised the party?

Which 8 countries? Sorry, I am a bit lost. Or 9.

soontobe Thu 01-Oct-15 13:28:55

I consider we defend ourselves against all countries. All of them.

soontobe Thu 01-Oct-15 13:30:53

You have had peace above your head. In the UK. That is what I am talking about. Never underestimate it.

Anniebach Thu 01-Oct-15 13:31:22

soon, you feel under threat of war from America and France ? you really troubled and frightened

soontobe Thu 01-Oct-15 13:32:38

Or not appreciate it. Or be thankful for it. Big time.

soontobe Thu 01-Oct-15 13:38:17

No I dont ffel under threat of war from America or France.
But neither do I just think today or short term, or even middle term.
Who knows what is coming our way in 20 years time.
No good then to say, "oh, we need such and such". The military just doesnt work in that way.
It is about foresight.

I barely worry about a thing Anniebach. God and all that.
But I sure as heck believe in preparation. Be prepared. The world is always changing. Always has, always will.

You have to ask what would be left to defend if we are talking about nuclear. It has also been said that general thought is that when Prime Ministers write the letters that will allow the codes to be used in the event of a wipe-out most will have said the same or similar to JC - they just haven't told everyone.

I really is incredibly simplistic to believe that nuclear has kept us safe. I don't know how many remember the Bay of Pigs crisis but it was not the weapons that kept us safe it was diplomacy. Diplomacy and the change from the need to rule others have both added to our safety. I would also say that being able to see the rest of the world on our screens within minutes, and to see the outcomes of war has had at least as great an effect as the bomb.

Just as the right brainwashes us to believe there is no alternative to austerity they have brainwashed us to believe people behave in a particular way and the outcomes will always be the same. The idea that if you have a big stick at home no one will attack you is madness - and retaliation is pointless. If we have reached the point where someone wipes us out - that's it folks. Better by far to work towards the most stable world we can.

Gracesgran Thu 01-Oct-15 13:47:49

I wonder if you believe in some sort of God given end-time soon.

Anniebach Thu 01-Oct-15 13:48:37

soon, we are of completely different faiths, I didn't feel peace during the Iraq or Afghanistan wars, I feel no peace knowing Syria is being bombed ,

Christ and all that

nigglynellie Thu 01-Oct-15 14:32:12

Well, I'm simplistic because I certainly believe that our deterrent has done just that, and kept us safe for the past 70 years. No one is or has suggested that we fire it first, that of course is out of the question, but I do believe that the knowledge that if the worst happened the nation responsible can be assured that from a submarine deep in the ocean far away from these shores, they will regret such an action, and knowing that will, and probably has, concentrated the mind of countries that wish us harm.

TriciaF Thu 01-Oct-15 14:36:00

I seem to remember that someone predicted not long ago that WW3 would start in the Middle East. Probably between Russia and the USA.
The situation in Syria currently has got those 2 together, let's hope and pray it doesn't all go bad.
Gog and Magog etc and the end of the world?
Sorry, feeling depressive today after a bad night.

Anniebach Thu 01-Oct-15 14:44:28

TriciaF, we survived the yellow peril and reds under the bed , these were suppose to bring about the end of the world

rosesarered Thu 01-Oct-15 14:58:47

So now we have two threads about Trident... A bit excessive.Have already put what I think on the other thread, but will just say that Comrade Corbyn has made the mistake of his political career by saying he would never under any circumstances push the button. He's finished now and will never become Prime Minister.

rosesarered Thu 01-Oct-15 14:59:45

Ooops, more ipad changing going on, the word was finished!

rosesarered Thu 01-Oct-15 15:02:00

I do think he knows he will never become PM though.

soontobe Thu 01-Oct-15 15:27:26

Gracesgran. Yes I do. But cant see what that has to do with this.

Anniebach, you must agree that there is peace above your head. Right now?

Anniebach Thu 01-Oct-15 15:33:48

No I cannot agree soon, I cannot think in such a narrow or selfish way, above me is the sky, the sun, the same sky and sun which is above Syria, the refugees in France and other countries

Iam64 Thu 01-Oct-15 15:44:10

How can anyone believeeve there is "peace above our head right now"? What absolute nonsense

whitewave Thu 01-Oct-15 15:51:07

It is getting worse too. I am beginning to worry somewhat as to how far it is going to escalate.

Can anyone remember when USA and Russia were bombing the sametargetatthe same time? Sheer madness.

nigglynellie Thu 01-Oct-15 15:53:10

Yes, the Russians and the Americans!! I remember posting on a completely different forum that this lethal combination could escalate in the Middle East and it being roundly pooh poohed! Seems it could be a frightening reality now, just say your prayers that someone somewhere can bring an end to this madness.

Gracesgran Thu 01-Oct-15 17:29:11

So believing in a God given end-time would not affect your view of weapons of mass destruction soon. You keep thinking that while the rest of us worry about people with your views.

durhamjen Thu 01-Oct-15 17:47:06

Michael Portillo thinks we should scrap Trident.

durhamjen Thu 01-Oct-15 17:49:10

I wonder, if Mr Cameron will not say he is also unwilling to use them, how can we trust such a man with the future of the human race, the continued existence of life itself? After all, this was the man who went against parliament's decision to involve our servicemen in attacks on Syria. David Cameron 'was aware' British pilots carried out Syrian air strikes despite Commons vote, and chose to disregard the democratic decision.

Why do these weapons exist at all?

durhamjen Thu 01-Oct-15 17:52:59

No point in arguing with you POGS. You obviously haven't looked at the link if you think it's selective.

The World Economic Forum is quite important, but obviously not to you.

Gracesgran Thu 01-Oct-15 17:57:33

Didn't know that about MP Jen. He's on tonight so that could be interesting.
