Headline in the DM today.
Now, with gangs of men roaming the streets and young German women being told to cover up, the moods changing.
But that's ok, don't you change, we will adapt to your culture.

I must be a soothsayer, I was saying this would happen weeks ago.
Must buy a lottery ticket.

whitewave I have asked that question in both the Anglican and RC church for years ,

Marmark1 Mon 28-Sept-15 08:44:10

Another bleddy hypocrite

I am not clear how any of the major Christian sects can square their accumulated wealth with the Christian ideals.

"makes the church appear to be grabbing and not missing out on a money making opportunity"

Nothing new there then.

nigglynellie Mon 28-Sept-15 07:08:20

Yes, it could well be that this cottage has to be charged for, we don't know that, but even so, it doesn't sit well from a humanitarian point of view and makes the church appear to be grabbing and not missing out on a money making opportunity,
No, of course refugee camps are not ideal, but with what could be millions of people fleeing appalling persecution and needing a place of refuge and hopefully security, I can't see what else in the short-term anyone can do. We can't magic up homes, jobs, infrastructure overnight, but what we can do is support these poor people in the camps where due to 'evil bastards' they've had to flee, and at least try to make life a bit more tolerable until someone somewhere can come up with some sustainable answers.

Welby's grandfather was a German Jew who changed his name when he came over here. Before the first world war, I think.

Greyduster I feel that in the main this is a fairly tolerant country. But a country is made up of individuals and some of those individuals hide their prejudices under a veneer of "tolerance". Like all bullies and cowards, they only "break cover" and join in the attack on certain individuals or groups when they feel that individual/group is at its most vulnerable. This has always been the case. As another poster mentioned, Jewish people who came here as part of the kindertransport during WWII have given accounts of the prejudice that some people displayed towards them as well as of the great kindness that was shown by others.

Some people have suggested that more resources be put into the refugee camps to make them more "bearable". In that way, we can apparently with a clear conscience, put to the back of our minds the fact that families, through no fault of their own, may spend many years stuck in the middle of nowhere, dependent on handouts of food because there is no work, living in basic dwellings and in featureless "neighbourhoods" that stretch for miles in which there are none of the amenities we take for granted - shops, libraries, playgrounds, cinemas, etc. - and which offer no opportunity to achieve personal or professional goals. I wonder if we would be happy to accept such an aimless existence for ourselves or our children/grandchildren and, if not, why should we think it acceptable for anyone else?

Anniebach Sun 27-Sept-15 23:14:12

Yes Jen,it was the death of their child which caused him to enter the priesthood

Anniebach Sun 27-Sept-15 23:12:52

You just did Ana

durhamjen Sun 27-Sept-15 23:06:48

The reason a deceased child should be mentioned is because he only started working for the church after that child had died, I believe. Before that he was working in the oil industry.

If you are going to criticise people for doing something good, at least get your facts right, rather than just sneering at him.

Ana Sun 27-Sept-15 23:05:09

I could say the same about you and your cronies, Anniebach, but I won't.

Anniebach Sun 27-Sept-15 23:02:36

Nigglynellie, we don't know the reasons, perhaps rules of the charity, perhaps insurance clause, the Bish doesn't own the property does he

Anniebach Sun 27-Sept-15 23:00:09

Ana, I respect the opinions of everyone , I dislike the ganging up and mocking in which you can usually be found at the centre

Ana Sun 27-Sept-15 22:36:51

It would also be rather nice if you backed off with your constant put-downs of those who hold different opinions to you, Anniebach.

Anniebach Sun 27-Sept-15 22:33:20

Because Ana, he is the father of six children, five living and one deceased ,you may choose to say he is the father of six children, the father of five children, is the father of five children but has been the father of six children, or you could back off with your constant nit picking , that would be rather nice

Ana Sun 27-Sept-15 22:25:07

(I don't see why it was necessary to mention a deceased child though - why do that?)

nigglynellie Sun 27-Sept-15 22:24:28

Oh dear, this really saddens me, as I used to have a lot of time for Justin Selby. I can't believe that he or.rather the church is being paid rent for the use of this cottage! Well, there you go, not a lot more you can say really.

Ana Sun 27-Sept-15 22:24:09

Oh sorry - got that wrong did I?

I'm so out of touch with present day Archbishopness! grin

Anniebach Sun 27-Sept-15 22:20:59

Not many single blokes around with a wife , five children and one deceased child are there ?

Ana Sun 27-Sept-15 22:09:47

Yes. He could move into the cottage - he's a single bloke after all...

rosesarered Sun 27-Sept-15 22:01:24

You could fit quite a few refugees into Lambeth Palace.....

rosesarered Sun 27-Sept-15 22:00:22

So, he's not even going to do it for free then?

Ana Sun 27-Sept-15 21:37:27

Yes, he's an example to us all...hmm

Luckygirl Sun 27-Sept-15 21:35:54

We could do what the Archbishop of Canterbury is going to do. He is kindly going to welcome a refugee family into a cottage in his grounds, and then a charitable organisation will pay him rent on their behalf. So generous of him.

trisher Sun 27-Sept-15 21:30:04

Aid isn't really helping to solve the problem is it? It is keeping people alive but in appalling conditions. The countries dealing with the refugees are, Jordan, Iraq,Lebanon,Greece, Turkey,Macedonia,Serbia and Hungary. They are taking in the people who need help whilst we just send money. It isn't enough.
