Has anything happened yet? It seems strangely silent.

Excellent article by Tim Farron. Nearly makes me wish I was a Libdem.

Won't undo the damage they did in the coalition, though.

Iam64 Wed 07-Oct-15 20:44:24

Have I missed something? The deputy chief constable of Manc, in charge of policing the conference praised the protesters' behaviour.

'Have I missed something"

Depends on what you know with all due respect. There has been ample news coverage on line and on t.v but if you haven't had the opportunity to view them then I guess you will have 'missed something".

There were 15 arrests 5 charged.

Journalists and those attending the conference were subjected to being called 'scum'. 'gobbed on', intimidated and whilst 'egg throwing' is more juvenile by nature it is still intimidation .

I won't waste much more time as there is so much evidence to be found it is more a case of either choosing to defend the indefencible or believing there is no place in a democratic country for 'the few' to intimidate , abuse and try to stop a legitimate meeting to take place, as happened a few days before at the Labour Party Conference.

People pick and choose which bits of the media reportage they decide to believe. Not worth bothering to disagree with those determined to see only what they want to see.

I have to say that I am really feeling the need for a finger-down-throat icon. DC's speech was sickening. A pretence of being caring; a set of plans for a greater Britain for heaven's sake - does he think we are totally brainless!? If this is what he has in mind - all this caring for the poor and disadvantaged etc. - why the heck has he not applied himself to it in the last 5 years? It is all so cynical. It makes me despair. What a creep. I really do think that is absolutely the most cynical political speech I have ever heard. I hate with a passion these "Churchillian" sound bites that all politicians seem to feel are necessary to communicate with us; the ponderous delivery; the well-placed tear - oh vomit vomit!

And all those back-slappers standing and applauding him - yuk!

Politics is such a dirty game.

Sorry POGS but I can't let the comment about the referendum campaign pass unchallenged. The man who 'egged' Jim Murphy was not part of the YES or NO campaign, simply someone who had a longstanding grudge against Murphy, who was incensed when he heard and saw him spouting forth beneath that man's own home. The only real violence of the whole campaign occurred in George Square on 19th September when gangs of men (Orange Order, Loyalists and Right wing thugs) arrived by train from NI and England and attacked the despondent YES supporters who had gathered there. They were immediately disowned by the official 'NO' campaign.

The MSM are very quick to print inflammatory stories of alleged violence but not prompt in reporting the real facts when they emerge later via Police or Court reports. I am intensely proud that we were able to have a democratic referendum on Independence here in Scotland with a campaign which was in the main good humoured, respectful and violence free. Compare that with other countries where the tanks would be out, tear gas used on Marchers, etc. etc. The Police summed it up as less violence or disorder during the entire 2 years of the referendum campaign than during/after one football match.

Gracesgran Wed 07-Oct-15 22:43:34

As you say Luckygirl. I think words are cheap; I will wait and watch the actions.

Gracesgran Wed 07-Oct-15 22:48:37

Quite right Ana there will always be a slant to the reporting and to the reading or viewing of the reports.

I posted this on another thread but it is just as appropriate here. We do indeed all see things differently.

Eloethan Wed 07-Oct-15 23:17:27

That's clever.

Challenge away.

I did not refer to any political persuasion nor particular type of intimidation toward Jim Murphy I was quite clear I don't care what party an individual belongs to 'nobody' has the right to try and silence another person because they stand in opposition to their own political persuasion through intimidation 'of any kind'.

Murphy being 'egged' (juvenile behaviour) was not even in my mind to be honest. I used Murphy as an example of my belief that I do not simply think the aggression/intimidation towards the conservatives is an issue for me personally. I detest 'any' poor sod from any party being intimidated.

So DC is going to tackle poverty?

So how does he square his rhetoric with a report produced by a team headed by David Willetts that says that as a direct result of DCs policies 200000 extra working people will be forced into poverty and overall a whopping 700000 extra people. This will raise the total to 4million.

The Tories do not like the fact that people are beginning to critisize this, however rather than revisit/rethink their policy they are thinking of delaying sending out the letters until after Christmas. They are obviously afraid of the

Sorry!

Headlines!!!

So more affordable houses to buy. Who on the minimum wage or zero hours contracts can afford to buy one of these affordable houses? No mention of building social housing so the poorest cannot buy, cannot rent social houses, cannot afford private rental property.

perhaps a Tory supporter would explain how some earning £268 gross can save a deposit and then pay the mortgage on one of these affordable houses

whitewave Thu 08-Oct-15 08:35:15

The bottom fifth of the population will be 4% WORSE off as a result of Tory policies. The top 5th will be 4% BETTER off.

Gracesgran Thu 08-Oct-15 09:45:28

^Today the chief executive of Shelter, Campbell Robb, said: "You don't solve an affordability crisis by getting rid of the few affordable homes we're building, yet that's exactly what this policy will do.

"Today's announcement confirms our fears that Starter Homes costing up to £450,000 will be built at the expense of the genuinely affordable homes this country desperately needs."^

This is from an article headed "How much do you need to earn for a mortgage on one of David Cameron's 'affordable' homes?"which has a calculator at the bottom to tell you what someone needs to earn to buy these houses.

2012
“There are young people who work hard year after year but are still living at home. They sit in their childhood bedroom, looking out of the window dreaming of a place of their own”
David Cameron, speech to 2012 Conservative Party Conference

2015
“When a generation of hardworking men and women in their 20s and 30s are waking up each morning in their childhood bedrooms – that should be a wakeup call for us”
David Cameron, speech to 2015 Conservative Party Conference

So what has he actually achieved other than fine words and, as I was told as a child "fine words butter no parsnips". There are still swaths of the population with unbuttered parsnips.

Gracesgran Thu 08-Oct-15 10:00:22

This map shows "If you're a family on the National Living Wage, here's where you can afford David Cameron's new starter homes"

Those who think D Cameron is doing well please look. I think his actions bely his words. Can you give me facts that tell me why I am wrong?

Anniebach Thu 08-Oct-15 10:19:24

Should someone tell him there are thousands who do not even have childhood bedrooms to sit in

Gracesgran Thu 08-Oct-15 10:30:08

It's enough to make you weep isn't it Annie

whitewave Thu 08-Oct-15 11:13:24

I get the feeling that everything is getting out of control, NHS in crises, Housing in crises, economy extremely fragile, local authorities having to take huge cuts in their grants, planning a free for all, control on the environment loosening, poverty rising exorbitantly, armed services taking enormous cuts. All in the name of laissez faire economics.

WilmaKnickersfit Thu 08-Oct-15 11:40:32

whitewave I agree. The changes being introduced by this government bring back the feelings I had when Thatcher was in power i.e. irreversible change to our society to the detriment of working class people. Millions being made from the outsourcing of public services or the wholesale selling of assets at low prices. It's woven into the governance of every level of our burocracy. This government knows what it wants to do and it will go to any length to achieve it irrespective of the true cost to the public purse. The truth behind the words is not what we are being led to believe.

And I feel helpless again. What is the point now of getting worked up about it? There's nothing I can do against this machine now it is in motion with several years before another election. All any of us can do is live our lives every day as best we can and hope public services will be there if we need them. As one of the vulnerable people we talk about, I worry about what lies ahead for me and my husband. God help us.

For people who still think Corbyn is doing okay, whatever Cameron and his acolytes say.

Ana Thu 08-Oct-15 19:44:15

Eh? confused

Ana Thu 08-Oct-15 19:45:10

You mean, he isn't doing OK?
