Germaine Greer- is she being treated fairly?

Germaine Greer once said that she didn't think people born as male who underwent treatment to become women were really women. Now there is a campaign against her for her discriminatory opinions. Her college at Cambridge was going to give her an honorary doctorate but has changed its mind. Cardiff University Students Union is getting up a petition to stop her from giving a lecture there (not on her opinions about transgendered people). What is going on?

I think this appalling. It is an abrogation of free speech.

FarNorth Sat 24-Oct-15 17:21:27

Did she say anything further about transgender women? When did she say it - recently?

Anniebach Sat 24-Oct-15 17:29:23

Not the full story, Germain not only expressed her views on transgender , she apposed the fellowship of a transgender colleague , her campaign was on the grounds that the woman was not a woman but a transgendered person, this caused upset at Cambridge and Ms Greer was unsuccessful in her opposition. So more than free speech surely? It was her fight to stop the woman being awarded the fellowship that has caused a transgender group in Cardiff to appeal to the Cardiff University to cancel the lecture

Anniebach Sat 24-Oct-15 17:30:18

Meant opposed not apposed , sorry

Here's some info I found, about it. The fellowship incident happened in the 1990's

Jane10 Sat 24-Oct-15 17:37:08

Gosh. I'm surprised and disappointed at her. I'd always respected her.

Anniebach Sat 24-Oct-15 17:37:26

It happened

Ana Sat 24-Oct-15 17:43:03

So, has she never lectured at Cambridge since the 90s?

thatbags Sat 24-Oct-15 17:51:55

What's going on is that students have turned into intellectual cannibals.

Or twits.

thatbags Sat 24-Oct-15 17:53:35

Some students, I should say. That daft ones who seem to have positions in students' unions.

Why don't they bloody argue with her instead of banning her? Idiots.

NotTooOld Sat 24-Oct-15 18:16:32

I'd like to respect the woman as she did a lot for feminism back in the day but whenever I see/hear her on TV or radio now she just seems like a dinosaur, completely out of touch. Perhaps she should retire gracefully. Perhaps she's on GN? Eek.

Iam64 Sat 24-Oct-15 18:39:34

Ok what would germaine's gransnet name be?
Grumpyolderwomanwhoneverwasaman

I tend to agree, she is disappointing isn't she. I Saw her on The News Quiz and she did come over as stuck in the past and lacking a spark or humour

whitewave Sat 24-Oct-15 18:47:44

Greer is more of a disappointment every time I see her now. I simply can't understand where she is coming from.

I'm no fan of Germaine Greer, particularly since she supported FGM on the grounds that it was cultural imperialism to say it was wrong for women to undergo FGM, apparently not recognising that it's young girls who are subject to its practice.

I've no idea if she's since changed her opinions on this.

However, I think she's right that a man can't become a woman by virtue of surgery.

Marmark1 Sat 24-Oct-15 18:54:17

Dinosaur?thats ageism,It's her opinion for goodness sake. They can disagree. Most of the time she's right any way.How can they be proper female, with a few exceptions.Adult people discuss things sanely.Another thing she's right about, feminist today have completely lost the plot.

Marmark1 Sat 24-Oct-15 18:56:33

How would any of you like to be dismissed as a Dinasour.I wouldn't,it's very insulting.

Ana Sat 24-Oct-15 19:00:20

Calling someone 'a dinosaur' in this context is not ageism. It's simply referring to the fact that their opinions and mindset have not moved with the times and appear to be stuck in the past. There are people of 40 like that, never mind 80-odd!

Anniebach Sat 24-Oct-15 19:03:11

So we now have proper males, proper females, not proper males and not proper females

thatbags Sat 24-Oct-15 19:08:26

I'd be happy to be called a dinosaur. Awesome critters.

Marmark1 Sat 24-Oct-15 19:43:08

Some people really really pick and choose what to be upset about.Give me consistent call a spade any day.

Marmark1 Sat 24-Oct-15 19:49:45

And no Anniebach, you have male and female, end of.
The exception I was talking about, was a person who was born not developed down below. They said it would be easier to bring her up female. But as she developed it was clear she was male.Very very sad,I think he committed suicide in the end.

I'm a great fan of Germaine Greer. She says her disagreement with the appointment was nothing to do with the person's sexuality but with the way the it was made. I don't know if that's true or not but presumably neither does anyone else.

I'm not sure I agree with her views on people who undergo sex changes, but then I don't know if her argument has been properly reported. From what I have read, she seems to be suggesting that undergoing drastic surgery which leaves a person dependent on medication for life in order to try and "fit in" with set ideas of gender is not a true representation of real freedom.

I wasn't aware that she ever supported FGM and, if she did, I totally disagree with her and would hope that she has changed her mind about this.

I'm not sure she deserves to be called a dinosaur.

Lilygran Sat 24-Oct-15 20:29:55

Greer did not support FGM, she said women fighting against it in countries where it was practised should be supported. She was unsuccessful in her opposition to a transgender appointment in Newnham. She tries to make sure any topic is thoroughly discussed and some individuals think it is wrong to argue anything but the party line.

Deedaa Sat 24-Oct-15 21:11:26

In the interview I saw she said she wasn't objecting to people wanting to change their gender, she just couldn't see them as 100% changed. She said that was just her opinion and that at her age she wasn't bothered about going and arguing about it Seems fair enough to me.
