Watching the news and there have been 2 separate incidents in Paris (one explosion near a football ground and one shoot out at a restaurant.). 4 dead so far. So awful. What is happening?

soontobe Sat 14-Nov-15 16:55:01

granjura. With respect, I would rather you dont do a post about christianity, while discussing the Koran. I take your point without you needing to do that.
as people can indeed mistranslate and misinterpret things.

In a way I would disagree with you slightly Ana, because if other people can be shown that it is not in the Koran, then that has to be a good thing. If it really was in the Koran, there would be even more problems in my opinion.

Ana Sat 14-Nov-15 16:57:12

You've said yourself that there are parts of the Old Testament that no one would actually take literally and act upon these days.

So even if the stuff about the virgins awaiting the terrorists in paradise were in the Koran (which I know it is not) no one who was not an extremist would dream of acting on it.

Anyway, I don't think this is the thread to debate such matters yet again.

loopylou Sat 14-Nov-15 17:00:03

the BBC are saying that one of the terrorists came through Greece in September.
Goodness knows how many others may have entered Europe this way sad

granjura Sat 14-Nov-15 17:11:15

soontobe- I am sorry- but if it is relevant, to illustrate an important point- then I will.

soontobe Sat 14-Nov-15 17:18:57

ok, I will leave someone else to answer if needs be.

JamJar1 Sat 14-Nov-15 17:19:41

A shame, this thread started off well.

Daisyanswerdo Sat 14-Nov-15 17:20:04

I don't think I attributed anything directly to Islam, which I hold to mean 'Peace'. It seems that terrorists pervert beliefs to justify their actions. I stand by my comment.

soontobe Sat 14-Nov-15 17:22:36

I dont know about anyone else, but I think a different thread to debate or talk about all the different elements that may come out of this attrocity, may be the way forward.
Personally, and I cant speak for anyone else, it would be nice if this one was more about remembering those who died and have injuries, many of them serious.

Alea Sat 14-Nov-15 17:23:29

I agree with Ana and Soontobe that this is neither the time or the thread to debate fundamentalist OT theology. OT theology IMO has more to do with Judaism than Christianity although of course I accept that early Christians were raised in the OT and Hebrew tradition. Turns of phrase , ev n after centuries of translation and interpretation are always going to reflect their era.
And, Granjura I know you have a thing about the KKK, but again this risks derailing this thread, reviving former debates/discussions which have been hammered to death on other threads.
Fair enough, discussions can ramble and go off at tangents, but we have been there already

JamJar1 Sat 14-Nov-15 17:24:04

Yes I agree soon.

JamJar1 Sat 14-Nov-15 17:25:54

Also Ana and Alea slow typing fingers today.

Daisyanswerdo Sat 14-Nov-15 17:26:50

I see I said 'their religion' in my first post. I agree I should have said 'their interpretation of religion'. Apologies.

nightowl Sat 14-Nov-15 17:28:46

Son's girlfriend is safe thank goodness. She was intending to go out last night to an area quite close to the restaurant attack but didn't go because she felt too tired. How easy for anyone to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Good news for us but the worst kind of news for so many families today who will now be in shock and mourning. I agree there is no difference in lives lost whether East or West but of course we all feel for our own loved ones first. A very dark day for France.

Anniebach Sat 14-Nov-15 18:01:43

It was said on the news one of the dead assassins has been identified, born in France

granjura Sat 14-Nov-15 18:09:02

Thank you Daisy- and I agree, this is not the place, but I couldn't let it pass. I have witnessed so much hatred today on FaceBook and other places, including neighbours- and it was just too much. Apologies.

Will say it again, the 1000s of peaceful Muslims in France will suffer terribly due to this- my heart goes to all, Muslim and all.

harrigran Sat 14-Nov-15 18:30:14

One of the alleged suicide bombers entered Greece from a boat from Turkey, passing himself off as a refugee. This was always a possibility.
My thoughts are with all those in France at this sad time.

NanSue Sat 14-Nov-15 18:43:24

My heart goes out to all those involved.
Surely this makes it all the more important to further strengthen our borders to stop illegal immigration. We have no idea who is entering the country in this way. It makes me fearful for my DC and DGc and what their future holds.

Alea Sat 14-Nov-15 18:44:02

Did Muslims suffer in the UK after the July bombs? I don't think that they did, although I admit to sweating a bit whenever a young man of "Islamic" aspect and with a backpack got on a bus or underground train I was on. I fact I didn't use the tube for many months blush but I think only the uneducated and the bigots descended into xenophobia (talking of which did you see today's Sun headline? Disgusting) or violent anti Islam prejudice. Oh there will be right wing marches by rent a mob, there will be DM or Sun type rants, but hopefully not on GN.

granjura Sat 14-Nov-15 18:49:49

Not he place, as others have said, so will be short. The situation in France and UK re Muslims is totally different- totally- the reasons are very complex, based on the wars with Algeria, on history and secularism- etc.
I have witnessed awful behaviour towards innocent Muslims today in France, and with neighbours and on FB, etc. An American Huguenot group calling for revenge and killings, etc.

Anya Sat 14-Nov-15 18:50:27

The 'uneducated and the bigots' are widespread Alea in the UK sad

Jane10 Sat 14-Nov-15 18:55:11

Its a bit too late to restrict the migration. Hundreds of thousands have already arrived. I remember worrying about how it was an open door for terrorists. Oh well. Just have to brace ourselves. We've been comparatively lucky so far. BTW I agree that ISIS is nothing to do with Islam a religion of peace. This is just a bunch of bullies with guns coming up with a lovely justification for carrying out their revolting whims.

Welshwife Sat 14-Nov-15 18:58:09

The car used in the attacks was hired in Belgium - the driver has just been stopped at the Franco Belgique border and arrested.

WilmaKnickersfit Sat 14-Nov-15 19:00:26

The only connection these atrocities has to religion is that the attackers are EXTREMISTS. Let's leave it at that please on this thread.

harrigran where does your information come from about one of the attackers being a refugee? I have been following the events since it started and all I have heard is one attacker was identified by his fingerprints. He was born in Paris in 1985 was only known to police for petty crime. A Syrian passport was found near the body of another attacker showed he was born in 1990..

rosequartz Sat 14-Nov-15 19:06:38

This is devastating for the relatives, for France and for the freedom of us all.

Vive la France
sad

rosequartz Sat 14-Nov-15 19:07:18

stb Ana and others

You are right, this is not the time nor the place - nor the right thread.
