Watching the news and there have been 2 separate incidents in Paris (one explosion near a football ground and one shoot out at a restaurant.). 4 dead so far. So awful. What is happening?

Along with the police cuts the border force is about to be cut - planes and ships. Who will protect us. Instead of sending money to countries who spend it on arms why do we not look after our own people and country.

The Western way of life embraces not just freedom in its literal sense but the right to enjoy our lives. ISIS will continue to target restaurants, concert halls and football stadia because they are easy pickings but we will not be cowed into submission because who would want to exist under a rule of terror?

As individuals there is little we can do other than to be vigilant and have faith in our intelligence service.

Their religion tells them they will go to Paradise when they blow themselves up. Seems to me until they are disabused of this, we cannot expect change.

What a sad world we all live in now - my thoughts are with all the families and friends affected .But let's not blame immigration on this ,they are an evil few. We have dear friends in Paris I hope they are safe, - no word from them yet .

MamaCaz Sat 14-Nov-15 13:33:33

Jétais Charlie.

Je suis la France.

I have a nephew with a pregnant wife living in Paris. I have just emailed them, I hope they are ok!!

Anniebach Sat 14-Nov-15 13:43:26

rosesarered, I do not rant, this thread is about the killing of innocent people, not nit picking

jackiekiel Sat 14-Nov-15 13:44:30

I used to think that cctv cameras and checking our emails was an infringement of our liberties but changed my mind some time ago. I'm sure that activities like these have prevented terrorist attacks. I wonder what people like Edward Snowden would think if their loved ones were affected by an incident that could have been picked up by security services listening in?

merlotgran Sat 14-Nov-15 13:46:57

This thread is about the killing of innocent people in Paris.

The French, as a nation which considers their privacy of paramount importance, loathe CCTV cameras, and I must say I agree with them. There has been much opposition to the installing of CCTV in the centre of Toulouse, but it seems inevitable. Maybe we have been living in a cosy fool's paradise and we all need to get used to being spied on for our own safety. But if we have nothing to hide... so what?

whitewave Sat 14-Nov-15 14:22:15

I am not clear that cctv will prevent such atrocities.

Intelligence is the only thing that will stop them.

soontobe Sat 14-Nov-15 14:27:57

cctv may or may not prevent attrocities. But it must be a useful tool, especially after an event such as this.

I would imagine that intelligence uses cctv a lot.

JamJar1 Sat 14-Nov-15 14:36:44

We would never be able to stop all attacks, we enjoy our way of life, our freedom. When the people out to commit these terrible acts are wearing suicide vests, quite prepared to die it must make it so much more difficult for the security services.

My beautiful daughter is safe. She lives in Paris. Very shaken. She teaches in a university, which is such a worry. So terrible. Those poor people .

granjura Sat 14-Nov-15 15:53:55

My heart goes out to France- including the signficant proportion who are peaceful Muslims- and still often treated like 2nd or 3rd class citizens- even after 2, 3, 4 generations in France- they will suffer hugely because of this.

granjura Sat 14-Nov-15 16:04:11

'Their religion tells them they will go to Paradise when they blow themselves up. '

please, do not fall in this trap- this has nothing to do with Islam.

granjura Sat 14-Nov-15 16:07:00

The Koran, again and again, refutes murder and terrorism. Here is just one passage, but there are many many more throughout:

1. Terrorism is above all murder. Murder is strictly forbidden in the Qur’an. Qur’an 6:151 says, “and do not kill a soul that God has made sacrosanct, save lawfully.” (i.e. murder is forbidden but the death penalty imposed by the state for a crime is permitted). 5:53 says, “… whoso kills a soul, unless it be for murder or for wreaking corruption in the land, it shall be as if he had killed all mankind; and he who saves a life, it shall be as if he had given life to all mankind.”

nigglynellie Sat 14-Nov-15 16:12:18

I think we should all carry ID cards. Other countries do without any discernable problems. I absolutely no problem at all with ccttv cameras, anyone reading my extremely tedious emails or any other form of surveillance. If you've nothing to hide, you've nothing to fear, and if this is what has to happen to keep us safe, then, bring it on!

soontobe Sat 14-Nov-15 16:15:59

So do terrorists add the bit about blowing themselves up and going to Paradise, on to the Koran in some way granjura?
Or are you saying that the terrorists dont believe that?

MargaretX Sat 14-Nov-15 16:28:57

It is the 70 virgins who are awaiting these suicide bombers when they arrive in paradise. Thats the reward for them.

Of course it is France at the moment but it is a world problem and Annibach is right when the cost of lives is being counted, there is often a difference between East and West.
I always have a selfish thought and think of my dcs and wonder when they leave home to travel the world what the risks will be then.
This is a really sad day.

MargaretX Sat 14-Nov-15 16:30:08

grandchildren I meant of course.

granjura Sat 14-Nov-15 16:40:23

No-where in the Koran are 72 virgins promised to murderers or terrorists.

It takes just a few minutes to research this and see that it is a mis-translation and mis-interpretation. Very easy for enemies of the 'Christian West' to pick bits of the old testament to demonstrate what a violent religion Christianity is.

granjura Sat 14-Nov-15 16:44:21

Have you ever red the old testament...what about:
Kill the Entire Town if One Person Worships Another God (Deuteronomy 13:13-19 NLT)
Kill Homosexuals (Leviticus 20:13 NAB)

and the new:
Luke 19:27:
But those mine enemies, which would not that I should reign over them, bring hither, and slay them before me.

Matthew 10:34:
Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.

e.g. has the Westboro church something to about Christianity...not at all
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Westboro_Baptist_Church

Ana Sat 14-Nov-15 16:45:01

It doesn't matter whether it's in the Koran or not. It's what the terrorists believe.

I'm sure most people are aware that the vast majority of muslims believe no such thing and want to distance themselves from these extremists.

granjura Sat 14-Nov-15 16:50:13

I'd say that is does matter, hugely. It's a bit like saying that the KKK is a Christian organisation and acting on behalf of Christians.

My heart goes out to France- but also to all the peaceful Muslims there, as said, often still treated like 3rd class citizens, even when fully integrated, not wearing specific clothing, well educated, etc- and who will suffer even more if that kind of 'amalgam' takes hold and such nonsense used against them.
