Labour MP's harassment

For a while now there have been reports of Labour MP's being bullied, harassed by left wing activists. They have been threatened with deselection, sent photos of dead babies to put pressure on them to vote on Syria etc.

Yesterday during the Syrian debate many Labour MP's made reference to this happening and Labour MP John Mann called for Cameron to apologise for his words but also said the Labour front bench should also apologise for the harassment the Labour MP's were recieving. Labour MP Stella Creasy literally left the debate to go to her office as the staff were receiving phone abuse and there were anti war campaigners causing them harassment. This point will be refuted by those who attended so we must all make our own decision as to whom we believe.

I mentioned in posts last night how disgusting I think this behaviour is on the Should we bomb Deash/IS thread. I genuinely feel very sorry for the Labour MP's and to be honest I think there is going to be more trouble ahead if the Labour Party do not back their MP's a little harder than has happened so far.

What gives people the right to assume their opinion , their view should not be doubted, not debated and must be adhered to or they resort to threatening behaviour. It is not democratic and I agree with those MP's and commentators who believe this wave of activism is a backward move for the Labour Party..

Perhaps we could have a boxing ring emoticon or a boxing glove one. With a bit of holly attached. Never seen so much intransigence over words like wonder or if.

Ouch! Thinking about the bit of holly Stansgran tchgrin

So now Momentum have decided to bar all parties from attending their meetings , they are declaring Labour members only can attend.

I wonder if the other parties such as the Socialist Party , The Socialist Workers Party , Stop the War Coalition, Left Unity Communist Party etc. will take any notice.

Certainly getting very muddled with all the goings on .

Anya Tue 08-Dec-15 20:21:47

And I see Caroline Lucas has resigned from the Stop the War Coalition.

thatbags Tue 08-Dec-15 20:33:36

Tweeple are saying Jeremy Corbyn should distance himself from StW too.

Anya Tue 08-Dec-15 20:43:01

What a mess!

Iam64 Tue 08-Dec-15 20:55:48

I was pleased to see Caroline Lucas resigned from the Stop the War Coalition. I would be pleased to see Jeremy Corbyn distance himself from StWC as well.
It is a mess Anya

Ana Tue 08-Dec-15 21:04:43

Lucky for him that he had to resign as Chairman after he became leader of the Labour Party.

POGS Tue 08-Dec-15 21:06:12

Good for her , I should think she thought long and hard before making that decision.

As for Corbyn he might have stood down as Chair of Stop The War but he is showing no signs of refuting what they say nor what they do by the looks of it. He is in a spot of bother for attending their fund raising event so he is making no attempt to put a barrier between himself and Stop The War. At least he is complying with his convictions but there is certainly a lot of unhappy politicians in his party over Stop The War, Momentum et al.

Marr on Sunday asked Tristram Hunt MP if he thought Corbyn should go ahead with ' breaking bread ' with the StopThe War event soon or should he send out a message and not go there.

Hunt said "Yes, very much so, I don't think he should go there. Stop The War Coalition picketed the Labour Party HQ when we were trying to run a phone bank for the Oldham bi-election, so they were preventing the election of a Labour Member of Parliament . We have seen some pretty ugly comments from them about Hilary Benn and saying he should be sacked. Also their comments about Islamic State , their comments about how the French almost had it coming to them. I think they are a really disreputable organisation and I hope Jeremy will step back and not go to their fund raiser.

Really scraping the barrel now, durhamjen. Chris Floyd....hmm

Anniebach Tue 08-Dec-15 22:56:47

Jen, I think that was an excellent article, I was amused by 'holy Tony ' but I am glad he put the record straight , not that the Blairites or those on the right will accept it.

durhamjen Tue 08-Dec-15 23:48:08

What's wrong with Chris Floyd, Ana? I guess you haven't read the article, unlike Annie. All you are doing is attacking me, again.

Eloethan Tue 08-Dec-15 23:55:09

Ana What exactly did you object to in the Floyd article?

Which of his statements do you believe are untrue?

janeainsworth Wed 09-Dec-15 07:22:28

Who is Chris Floyd? I don't suppose I'm the only person on GN who has never heard of him. I started to read the article but couldn't penetrate the ramblings. confused

thatbags Wed 09-Dec-15 07:47:22

This article certainly makes StW seem like an ideologically unsavoury organisation.

"In recent years, the Stop the War Coalition has defended Russian aggression in Ukraine and Georgia; has barred Syrians from speaking at its meetings while giving the floor to debased British Assadists and Stalinists; and have sided firmly with the Ayatollahs and the Ba'athists ahead of democrats and genuine anti-imperialists in the Middle East. In the wake of the Paris attacks the StWC even compared ISIS to the Spanish Brigades."

Iam64 Wed 09-Dec-15 09:00:59

I've not heard of Chris Floyd either

thatbags - thanks for the link, I hadn't seen that article. Of the two links I just read, I found the one bags linked to be much more well written and researched.

rosequartz Wed 09-Dec-15 10:02:50

I've not heard of Chris Floyd either isn't he a boxer?

annsixty Wed 09-Dec-15 10:30:15

Get with itRose Floyd Merryweather and Chris Eubanks.

rosequartz Wed 09-Dec-15 10:33:47

annsixty of course blush
It just sounded very familiar (not a boxing fan but had heard of the names and getting mixed up), now you mention it I have heard of Floyd Patterson, is that right? But not Floyd Merryweather.

It could be quite likely, though, as anyone and everyone has an opinion these days which can be transported to the world on twitter or whatever and posted as fact.

jimorourke Wed 09-Dec-15 10:37:12

Of course we must have democracy but the Tory Party forced their MPs to back their Leader David Cameron by whipping all the votes.

The Labour Party acted democratically because their Leader Jeremy Corbyn allowed their MPs to vote with their conscience. New members of the Labour Party have a lot to learn about what is acceptable behaviour towards MPs they don't agree with. Ultimately LP members can be expelled from the party. However forcing our country into a bombing war is bound to bring out strong feelings against it .

However when other political parties don't even allow debate that's not democratic.

Anya Wed 09-Dec-15 10:38:24

'Rose Floyd' Ann60 confused

Don't you mean Pink Floyd ?

Anniebach Wed 09-Dec-15 11:30:41

Cameron ordered his MP's bev whipped because he so feared losing the vote, a case of I want to bomb and I am going to bomb ,

annsixty Wed 09-Dec-15 12:49:10

Ok ok Anya my excuse was that I was getting my tissues ready to go and see youngest GS (4) in his Nativity. He was a shepherd and the star of the whole thing of course tchgrin
