Labour MP's harassment

For a while now there have been reports of Labour MP's being bullied, harassed by left wing activists. They have been threatened with deselection, sent photos of dead babies to put pressure on them to vote on Syria etc.

Yesterday during the Syrian debate many Labour MP's made reference to this happening and Labour MP John Mann called for Cameron to apologise for his words but also said the Labour front bench should also apologise for the harassment the Labour MP's were recieving. Labour MP Stella Creasy literally left the debate to go to her office as the staff were receiving phone abuse and there were anti war campaigners causing them harassment. This point will be refuted by those who attended so we must all make our own decision as to whom we believe.

I mentioned in posts last night how disgusting I think this behaviour is on the Should we bomb Deash/IS thread. I genuinely feel very sorry for the Labour MP's and to be honest I think there is going to be more trouble ahead if the Labour Party do not back their MP's a little harder than has happened so far.

What gives people the right to assume their opinion , their view should not be doubted, not debated and must be adhered to or they resort to threatening behaviour. It is not democratic and I agree with those MP's and commentators who believe this wave of activism is a backward move for the Labour Party..

Oops! Too much wine
You still haven't enlightened me as to who Chris Floyd is, dj, or perhaps more importantly, why I should respect his views.

rosesarered Wed 09-Dec-15 19:20:56

What about the Floyd who used to cook with wine? sometimes he even put it in the food! tchgrin

thatbags Wed 09-Dec-15 19:21:10

Gandhi wasn't above criticism anyway. Nobody's perfect.

rosesarered Wed 09-Dec-15 19:23:09

Gandhi was hardly a saint, in fact a lot of deaths and riots can be attributed to him.

"But I’m sure very few of the Blairite bleaters and Tory twit-tweeters actually read the article. Certainly none of them took issue with its substance. They saw a headline that set their hive-mind going, in a setting — the STW website — that could be exploited to make partisan hay, and off they went. Of course, except for that first Tweeter, no one ever contacted me to find out if I actually was a STW “activist” or member, as they happily and witlessly repeated around the country."

8th paragraph, bags.
Blairites and Tories in equal measure. I do not understand why you single out Labour party members.

Janea, do you only read articles or blogs by people that you know?
Read the article and then you will find out why you should.
If you can't be bothered, it does not matter at all.

Ana Wed 09-Dec-15 19:39:29

Or indeed if jane or anyone else chooses not to read it it doesn't matter at all. No need for the rather rude 'can't be bothered', durhamjen.

durhamjen Wed 09-Dec-15 19:44:34

Hello again, Ana. Still following me around?

Anya Wed 09-Dec-15 19:47:01

She's behind you tchgrin

Ana Wed 09-Dec-15 19:49:13

Following you around, durhamjen? Ha, ha, you flatter yourself! tchgrin

dj I prefer to read articles by people of merit and who have some reputation as good writers/thinkers. It is fair to assume that anyone writing for the BBC or one of the quality papers is probably worth reading. But any sixth-former, or possibly junior school pupil, can set up a blog. It doesn't mean they're worth reading.
As I said, I tried and failed to penetrate Chris Lloyd's deathless prose.
If you post links without any explanation, that implies that you endorse them.
Instead of sneering, could you tell me who Chris Lloyd is and explain the merit of his writing?

durhamjen Wed 09-Dec-15 20:00:41

No, jane, if you do not want to read it, it does not matter.
It's quite sad, though, that no new writers will get your attention.
He's not a sixth former or junior school pupil. That to my mind is rather sneering, too. Many sixth formers can write very intelligently, as can many junior school pupils.

janeainsworth Wed 09-Dec-15 20:14:17

I'm not doubting that some of them can, dj
All I'm saying is that just because someone writes something, other people should necessarily deem what they have written as worthy of attention.
You certainly haven't produced any cogent reasons why I should bother to read him - but then I do wonder whether you bother to read other people's posts, since you rarely answer even genuine questions.

durhamjen Wed 09-Dec-15 20:15:59

This is a blog, I assume not by a sixth former, but not a person with a reputation such as you would read, jane. Anyone can write a blog on wordpress.

beastrabban.wordpress.com/2015/11/23/drone-operators-called-children-fun-sized-terrorists/

It's about drone operators, and how they dehumanise people to make their job seem easier.

janeainsworth Wed 09-Dec-15 20:21:25

Thank you, dj.
I'm afraid the connection between drone operators dehumanising people and harassment of Labour MPs escapes me.

thatbags Wed 09-Dec-15 20:22:20

I 'singled out' LP members and supporters, as you put it, dj, because I think it matters more when they express dissatisfaction with their leader than when Tories sneer at the leader of the Opposition. The same would apply if it were the Tory Party we were talking about.

Also, I thought the article was about stuff that happened at the Labour Party Conference. Do Tories go to LP conf?

It doesn't surprise me when Tories find fault with Labour politicians.

I'll leave it there. I think I might be on a different planet from the one you inhabit.

Ana Wed 09-Dec-15 20:23:45

Still no answer to your question, jane. One has to wonder whether the writer is of no consequence as long as the message agrees with durhamjen's own opinions.

durhamjen Wed 09-Dec-15 21:19:58

Yes, but you do not know, either, do you, Ana?

Labour party people are asking Corbyn to leave the Stop the War Coalition, to distance himself from it like Caroline Lucas has done, because of an article on their website saying that France had reaped the whirlwind of western support for bombing in the middle east.

The link I gave was to the man who wrote that article. He was not a member, and had not been asked if they could use his article. That was what he was writing about, and giving updates about.

Blairites will stop at nothing to discredit Corbyn. They are the ones asking him to leave a group he helped to form after the Iraq war was started.

The connection was not between drone operators and harassment of Labour MPs, jane, but between two articles that you would not read because you had not heard of their authors.

Nobody's perfect - Jack Lemon in Some Like It Hot

Anniebach Wed 09-Dec-15 21:24:46

Even the history of India's fight for freedom from the British raj has been rewritten on this forum

durhamjen Wed 09-Dec-15 21:28:56

I was looking for a blue link there, Annie. Then I realised you meant on this forum!

Ana Wed 09-Dec-15 21:30:49

Er, that's what she said.

durhamjen Wed 09-Dec-15 21:32:40

Hello again, Ana.

Ana Wed 09-Dec-15 21:38:21

Hello, durhamjen.

Sorry, am I not allowed to comment when you and ab are having a private conversation?

janeainsworth Wed 09-Dec-15 21:46:25

I must be unusually dense, I think.
A man writes a blog on which he says: “Paris reaps whirlwind of western support for extremist violence in Middle East, after Isis killed 130 people in the French capital.” (That's from the Guardian)
Stop the War coalition endorse this view by re publishing it. It's irrelevant whether or not they have his permission.
Caroline Lucas resigns from Stop the War because she can't support this position.
dj you conclude from this that 'Blairites will stop at nothing to discredit Corbyn'.
Sorry?? Which Blairites would these be exactly?
Should you feel like explaining for the benefit of me and I'm sure other Gransnetters who are equally mystified, I'll be on Bags's planet.

durhamjen Wed 09-Dec-15 21:49:06

Sorry, can't reach that high, jane.
