I come and go on Gransnet and have just returned after a break to find some really interesting topics. durhamjen is so up there with all the facts and must do such a lot of reading. She knows just how to put her finger on relevant information which is very useful to us all on here. She's evidently a driven woman - ideal for the above post. whitewave would make an admirable deputy.

What not illegal nell?

nigglynellie Fri 08-Apr-16 18:24:20

Hiring an advisor. Why mention it and what she's paid? Seems irrelevant to me, particularly as all PM's wives seem to!

WilmaKnickersfit Fri 08-Apr-16 18:31:48

Surely she doesn't pay £54k for a style advisor? shock I honestly thought she chose her own wardrobe or at least didn't pay out that kind of money. Even if the advisor only works for Sam (unlikely), that's a ridiculous amount of money. Maybe she shares her with the Cabinet and their partners. Don't care who is in power when it comes to this btw.

Ana Fri 08-Apr-16 18:33:53

Wonder if Denis Thatcher got a clothing advisor/allowance?

whitewave Fri 08-Apr-16 18:48:25

This isn't a serious thread nell

Jalima Fri 08-Apr-16 22:46:20

Wonder if Denis Thatcher got a clothing advisor/allowance?
I wouldn't have thought Denis needed advice on anything

Jalima Fri 08-Apr-16 22:49:53

Surely she doesn't pay £54k for a style advisor?
Perhaps that includes the clothes

Now, how much can I claim on expenses for my clothes if I am to be um er, forgotten my job title already. blush
Oh yes, was it the Agriculture, Rural Affairs and Food job?
Some very expensive and glamorous wellies and a Drizabone.

Anniebach Fri 08-Apr-16 22:55:58

Don't forget umberellas Jalima

whitewave Fri 08-Apr-16 23:00:46

Sorry got it wrong it isn't 54k its 53k.Funded by those who pay their taxes. The stylist is paid as a civil servant.

whitewave Fri 08-Apr-16 23:02:48

So I want quite a lot of posh evening clothes to wear to all my art and culture dos. So can I book the stylist at her earliest convenience?

Jalima Fri 08-Apr-16 23:03:04

I think I would have to wear a very fetching waterproof hat, can't cope with an umbrella and keep shaking hands with farmers, cows, sheep etc

Jalima Fri 08-Apr-16 23:04:03

Beginning to think I picked the wrong job

However, I could revisit my youth by going to all those Young Farmers' Dances wink

durhamjen Fri 08-Apr-16 23:07:10

Not illegal, but a bit crass at the moment, as her husband and his best friend think it's okay to take £30 a week away from the disabled.

Who wants to be Samcam's adviser?
Why does she need one? She's got shares in Smythson's?
Maybe she cannot get her hands on her money at the moment - too many people watching.

whitewave Fri 08-Apr-16 23:10:57

It's off shore somewhere

Jalima Fri 08-Apr-16 23:13:04

Not me, I can't style myself.
I will stick to my wellies and waterproofs.

WilmaKnickersfit Fri 08-Apr-16 23:28:55

It won't include clothes, in fact I think the PM's wife will get a clothing allowance. Just think of all the formal dresses she'd need. Anyway, we'll share the dress advisor in our government. I can't wait to go shopping! Or maybe the shops will come to us with goodies for us to try on! Somebody give me the phone number for Rigby and Peller so I can get fitted for a new bra! grin

Jane10 Sat 09-Apr-16 09:15:57

I'll just wear my House of Lords robe all the time. It'll cover a multitude of sins -a sort of velvet and (artificial I insist) ermine burka. Lovely. Wonder if I can wear my slippers too?

Elegran Sat 09-Apr-16 09:25:33

Velvet robe, no . . . Sorry,, Jane, mixed metaphors there. Are there any top jobs still vacant? I am unemployed, could do with some pin money. Getting the flat roof redone next week, could I swing that on "maintenance to important ancient buildings" do you think?

Jane10 Sat 09-Apr-16 11:18:42

You'd be bound to get a grant for that. What's wrong with a velvet robe by the way? Is this a matter for the Education Minister or the Fashion Police? Ooh that could be an interesting job....

Elegran Sat 09-Apr-16 11:29:02

The velvet robe reminded me of fur coats, Jane. that's all. Can I be Minister for Misinformation? I could send out false reports of what everyone said in cabinet so that their popularity ratings soared and we all get re-elected next time round.

durhamjen Sat 09-Apr-16 12:07:58

Just heard that the woman who won £43,000 for being the best dressed woman at Aintree bought her dress for £7.

So no dress allowances or advisers, sorry.
No I am not sorry. Daft word in these straitened times.

Do we all need to read Orwell's 1984 again, so we can gen up on what newspeak is, or rather what we should not say?
After all, we do wish to be an improvement on the present shower - or am I taking this too seriously?

whitewave Sat 09-Apr-16 13:29:13

No dj I would worry very much indeed about anyone wanting to be worse than the present shower.

Just looking on the news about the temporary bridges used in D Day - wonder if Millibands dad used it? What a brave lot they all were. I find this part of our history fascinating.

By the way how can I get a list of all the u turns this shower have done?

durhamjen Sat 09-Apr-16 14:10:10

My father in law built them.
He was in the engineers and had to go in front of all the tanks building bailey bridges across the rivers before they got there.
He met Montgomerie once when he was left to guard a bridge that they had just built in record time. All the other troops went into the town to relax, and he was just left there, when Monty appeared with his entourage.

WilmaKnickersfit Sat 09-Apr-16 14:12:47

Sorry DJ but if I'm going to be on QT and sit in the front row during PMQT, I at least want an advance on my salary to buy a couple of new suits. I promise to buy something that I can mix and match and not choose designer labels (won't fit me anyway). grin

durhamjen Sat 09-Apr-16 14:43:27

Okay, Wilma, just for that.
How many suits do you think Cameron and Osborne have got for the front row?

U-turns up to 2013, Whitewave.
