London Mayoral Election

Doesn't seem to be a thread on this. Most GN members won't have a vote but we all have an interest in how the Capital functions and the Mayor's office has a fair amount of power over things like transport.
In the blue corner we have Zak Goldsmith child of Sir James and Lady Annabel, brother to Jemima Khan. Previous jobs editor of The Ecologist (gift from his uncle) and Tory MP for Richmond.

And in the red corner Sadiq Khan, son of Amanullah Khan, who worked as a London bus driver for over 25 years; his mother, Sehrun. Human rights lawyer and then a Labour MP Tooting.

How will London vote in a few weeks time? And if you have a vote - who do you favour and why?

Politics has been changing in Scotland for as long as I can remember Alea mainly because of the anti or pro union stance. It would not surprise me if they ended up with a pro-union left and a pro-union right; and anti-union left and an anti-union right party but that is just conjecture. I offered my opinion - you really cannot tell me I should have a different one all you can do is present a different argument.

Alea Sun 08-May-16 16:21:59

I am not telling you or anybody to have a different opinion, merely stating my own and asking why you take exception to my description.
Honestly, do you have to apply in triplicate to be allowed to express an opinion on these threads?
As a Scot I believe I am entitled to my views, my choice of epithet and my right to express them with impunity.

Nemo me impune lacessit, remember.

It's worth noting that this was the first Scottish Parliamentary Election in which 16+ young people were able to vote. I wonder if this made any difference to the balance of power at Holyrood.

www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/uk-elections-2016-results-in-full-council-seats-conservative-tory-labour-jeremy-corbyn-a7019041.html

Not many papers or people on here have mentioned this, though.
Hard to believe the Tories lost more seats on Thursday than Labour.
Labour won all the Mayoralties and both by elections.

Look at this, too.

"The Conservatives have also lost overall control of Elmbridge Borough Council in Surrey, where votes were not counted until Saturday. This was partly due to boundary changes which reduced the number of council seats from 60 to 48.

After the boundary changes and Thursday’s election, the Conservatives ended up with 11 fewer seats in Elmbridge, with their total of 22 councillors being insufficient for them to have an outright majority over seven Liberal Democrats and 19 residents association members who were elected councillors."

Serves them right for changing the boundaries.

So we've been talking about antisemitism - but wow- the Islamophobia on the Net is just absolutely vile. Had several messages today on FB from Swiss and French 'friends' which made me feel sick- replied and then deleted them.

Anniebach Sun 08-May-16 17:30:49

islamophibia isn't racism, it's free speech, but condemning Israel for their actions in Pakistan is racist and not free speech

Gracesgran Sun 08-May-16 17:41:53

I think you should start at the beginning Alea and see who was not being allowed to express a view. smile but it's OK.

Alea Sun 08-May-16 17:43:05

confusedconfused

granjura Sun 08-May-16 17:43:50

the hypocrisy is seriously shameful and blatant...

Those French and Swiss posting on FB and all over know nothing, but zilch, nought, nada, rien du tout ... on Sadiq Khan apart that he is Muslim. Shameful and blatant racism and rampant Islamophobia. I will NOT put up with it- whatever the consequences!

durhamjen Sun 08-May-16 17:44:25

you.38degrees.org.uk/petitions/sack-laura-kuenssberg

This is interesting, a petition to sack Laura Kuennsberg because she has not shown impartiality as she should have throughout the whole election coverage, particularly of Jeremy Corbyn.

whitewave Sun 08-May-16 17:46:53

Yes I have given up listening to her I think she is showing her immaturity. But it has been quite dreadful, even if you are a Tory supporter it has been so partial as to be quite useless.

Alea Sun 08-May-16 17:47:34

Was it "routed"? Bearing in mind the first devolved Scottish parliament's First Minister was the Labour politician Dewar?
Was it JC should have been involved?
Was it "keeping an open mind"?
Was it KH and the sausage?

Other than that, I'm confused

Gracesgran Sun 08-May-16 17:48:40

Interesting Jen. The BBC have been particularly partial I feel.

whitewave Sun 08-May-16 17:53:19

I think that the BBC needs to rethink its political presenters. People like Andrew Neil drawn from a particular leaning publication are clearly not impartial. They need to get back to strict impartiality.

durhamjen Sun 08-May-16 17:54:11

And most of the newspapers - but we expect it of them. This is an interesting chart.

It really shows the problems Corbyn has to put up with.

durhamjen Sun 08-May-16 17:56:21

For those of you who do not like links, it's only one click and very easy to understand.

Gracesgran Sun 08-May-16 18:15:39

Naughty Jen grin It is interesting though smile

Jalima Sun 08-May-16 18:23:04

The BBC can't win, then; for years they were accused of being leftist and biased towards the Labour party, now they are accused of being biased towards the right.

I thought Laura Kuenssberg was always biased towards the left, but challenging JC as one would challenge any new party leader thus giving him the chance to state his case and his beliefs.

Jalima Sun 08-May-16 18:28:23

Why "poor old Londoners having to have a mayor"!
I must admit I am one who does not agree with having an elected Mayor, but if that is what Londoners want, that is fine!

Unfortunately, as was demonstrated in London with Boris, and in Bristol with George Ferguson, the position of Mayor has tended to concentrate more on a personality cult than on what is best for the cities they purport to represent. Far better to have a Leader of the Council, someone who is not a 'personality' and who works with their Council (we hope) with dignity for the best outcomes for their areas, as we hope happens in the shires, counties and boroughs/cities without mayors.

Jalima Sun 08-May-16 18:33:07

Had several messages today on FB from Swiss and French 'friends' which made me feel sick- replied and then deleted them
shock I think I would be deleting the friendships too.
Thank goodness my messages on FB today have been wishing me a happy mother's day, photos of other family enjoying a wedding etc etc, someone's birthday celebrations, happy stuff.
I didn't think that FB was for anything political and deeper !

Anniebach Sun 08-May-16 19:02:42

Perhaps Laura K has a memory problem, she constantly reports that a senior member of the Labour Party told her etc, but never a name .

When she has a chance to attack Corbyn -she would manage this if she reporting the weather - she gets so excited

whitewave Sun 08-May-16 19:13:41

Yes she can bring him into everything she reports it really is ridiculous.

Gracesgran Sun 08-May-16 19:32:13

I wonder if they are frustrated. Here we are with only four years to go until the next general election and the LP haven't laid out enough of their policies in detail for the media to pull apart. Add to that the LP don't think they have to run to the media time table. How annoying for the press.

Anniebach Sun 08-May-16 20:27:34

Corbyn certainly doesn't jump when the media yells jump, I am quite sure they had pencils sharpened ready for his presence at Khan's signing in, hard cheese

durhamjen Sun 08-May-16 21:25:52

My son said that the cameras kept focusing on an empty chair when Corbyn was mentioned. When I looked at the coverage again, I was sure that it was Khan's chair, next to his wife. Lenses sharpenly focused as well as pencils.
