Should we be worried about right-wing populism?

Following on from the Trump thread.

It seems that right wing populism is growing with its anti-immigration stance, and its racist and fascist undertones.

The evidence I suggest is the following.
Trump in America
50% of Austria voting for a fascist president
Polands "Law and Order" party.
France Marine le Pen
UKs UKIP
Other European countries have growing right wing parties.
Eastern Europe has seen the rise of authoritarian nationalism, fascism and anti- minority populism.
They all share the same model as what we see in Russia, Putins government can be described as authoritarian, and socially conservative nationalism.

Some of our parents generation lost their lives fighting this evil. We can't let it slip back into our lives.

Rudeness verging on bullying, in fact.

whitewave Fri 27-May-16 21:33:29

I simply don't understand it, I never find it necessary to argue, or complain. That's all I'm saying. Mind you I am like that in real life as well so probably me being a wimp.

Elegran Fri 27-May-16 21:44:31

You are at liberty to be a wimp if you wish, ww but there is no obligation on anyone else to allow bad manners to go unchallenged.

Elegran Fri 27-May-16 21:47:02

PS thatbags Us sisters is right behind you, so am me.

daphnedill Fri 27-May-16 22:17:16

Bad manners are rarely challenged, so it seems.

petra Fri 27-May-16 22:33:52

Is it still me 'your' talking about ?

thatbags Fri 27-May-16 23:05:45

No.

Anya Fri 27-May-16 23:06:47

Totally untrue DD. - I actually let most of DJ's ridiculously biased postulations go unchallenged as I CBA 90% of the time grin

durhamjen Fri 27-May-16 23:44:57

whitewave, I've just read that Marine Le Pen has decided not to visit the UK in the run-up to the referendum.
One thing we can be grateful for.

harrigran Fri 27-May-16 23:45:26

petra, we were sticking up for you not telling you off.

daphnedill Sat 28-May-16 03:26:03

@granjura It hasn't been reported that much in the UK, but France seems to be in a state of chaos with petrol shortages, etc. From what I understand, Hollande is very unpopular and the socialists are split between those wanting a market solution and those looking for a more radical, traditional socialist solution - a bit like the Labour Party. Marine Le Pen is waiting to pounce.

obieone Sat 28-May-16 05:57:58

I agree with petra.

granjura - 17.51pm The price would go up as it should. Cheap food or cheap goods sometimes dont have a moral background. Which actually I am guilty myself to an extent.

whitewave Sat 28-May-16 08:20:39

How is Le Pen doing in the polls? Really what I'm asking is her party likely to win an election?

petra Sat 28-May-16 08:20:54

harrigran. Thank you.

Anya Sat 28-May-16 08:30:34

Yes, we were all sticking up for you petra

Anya Sat 28-May-16 08:32:38

Totally agree with your point about cheap food and cheap goods obieone

granjura Sat 28-May-16 10:05:36

totally agree that we should eat less but better quality food- but it seems those who do are in the minority obione. Bogof offers result in tons of waste, the price of milk cannot sustain farmers, and if you get 2 large chickens for a fiver- it doesn't take much to realise the husbandry couldn't have been top notch!

France has many parties on the right, many in centre, and many on the left- socialists and communists have always been at loggerheads- and yes, Marine is waiting in the wings...and is very likely to be elected sad - as said, this phenomenon is happening all over, including in Switzerland with the UDC/SVP sad - however, the way the country is run means that parties do have to work in collaboration all the time- and the people can also force referendums. Very different to the UK system where every few years things swings from left to right as the winning party takes all.

whitewave Sat 28-May-16 10:19:20

Seems there is a bit of panic in the States. The democrats are saying that even if democrats doesn't like Clinton - and she isn't popular they must get behind her to keep Trump out of the White House. I think quite a few Republicans feel the same.

The whole trouble it seems to me is that the politicians we are putting up with are hopeless, and the voter is desperate to find a leader that is honest, fair and with integrity. Mind you I am still puzzled about Trumps popularity.

Anniebach Sat 28-May-16 11:13:14

I don't think JillyT's post was racist, it was very pre 1960's though. We the British will only allow those we can use into the UK. No condemnation of UK employers who pay the low wages , it's the fault of the workers ?

Gracesgran Sat 28-May-16 11:48:34

Should we be worried about right-wing populism? If it is extreme then yes, but the we should be worried about all extremists. Or greatest defence would be PR and, for me, we couldn't have it soon enough. That way parties would have the number of MP relative to those who vote for them and they would have to back their ideas in Parliament.

Anniebach Sat 28-May-16 12:23:09

Extremists are frightening and I think should give cause for concern

rosesarered Sat 28-May-16 13:03:29

Exactly, ALL extremists be they right wing or left wing can be dangerous in government. Both are elected in response to what is happening in their countries.

Blinko Sat 28-May-16 13:42:30

Just read something that's made me think on, if we come out we risk becoming a poodle of the US (again). I think we're already too much in the shadow of the US and if the US were under Trump that would be a calamity! imo...

daphnedill Sat 28-May-16 14:49:11

I agree absolutely, Blinko. One of the people I trust least in the debate is Liam Fox (--who I think is as dishonest as they come--), who is on record as wanting closer ties with the US, especially the Tea Party faction and similar. Carswell is the same, although more upfront about he what he wants.

granjura Sat 28-May-16 15:19:00

Yes Blinko - to stand up to the USA and also China and Russia- we would be much much stronger as part of Europe.
