The EU - we are on the home straight folks!

Jon Danzig has written a piece in the Independent - looking at the character and their aspirations of the Brexit leaders. Interesting reading. I could not do a link for some reason.

I did not uphold cutting people out, gg. I upheld a support thread for Brexiters so that they felt they felt they had equal 'airing' to Remainers without feeling shouted down. My argument was not about stopping people saying what they wanted to say on the subject. There were several other threads where Remain supporters could and did already do that. HQ decreed that what I argued for could not be allowed. End of argument in favour of a predominantly Brexit thread.

Devil's advocate, as I said. A discursive exercise. I lost the argument with no hard feelings.

Given how nice Soop is to everyone and how she hardly ventures out of the Soop Kitchen for fear of argy-bargy, which DJ knows full well, I think her comment was far worse. It was personal; my argument was not, even if HQ did consider it outwith the rules. Massive difference from where I am. If you don't see the difference between personal and nonpersonal, that's where the difference in our understanding occurs. I am content to leave it at that as we are both entitled to our viewpoints.

Tegan it was on the news I saw the eu are not allowed to bale out businesses that are going out of business at the time I thought well they did it for banks.

practical the NE mines went because of Thatcher's policy not the EUs. And anyway I don't want to rake over old ground, those industries have gone. Nissan hasn't and is significant in its contribution to the whole economy of the NE but if we leave the EU it will go. I asked how you could justify your insistence on sovereignty and immigration controls to people who will lose their jobs. It seems you can't. Good enough reason I think to stay in.

Nobody is or was being shouted down thatbags. If they are you should report it. It is better for everyone that we can all offer their opinion but that really doesn't mean anyone should expect agreement just because you have put it forward.

I have said this before but that thread was not a "support" thread as we see on here, and for which I have been grateful, where people help kindly (mainly ) with personal difficulties - in fact I don't think a personal problem was aired. Nor was it a thread like Soup's kitchen. I look now and again and it seems to be a thread which, by it's very nature, avoids the contentious issues. The tread at issue started, from post one, to discuss the most contentious issue of our time. I think it was one of the most upsetting things I have seen on GN if I am honest and the attempt to exclude those with a different political opinion felt very personal to me. When people start to have their personal political opinion censored I worry for the country. That may sound extreme but, thankfully, it appears GNHQ felt much the same.

That's got nothing to do with foreign aid, practical. I think you are getting a bit mixed up here.
I've said before, it was the British government which wanted to stop the EU from putting tariffs on Chinese steel. If it had allowed it, that would have allowed other companies to buy British steel at cheaper prices.

People like Gisela Stuart annoy me, trisher, profiting from jobs and immigration offered, then wanting to prevent others from having the same opportunities.

Yes, I was referring to the foreign aid comment. For some reason I always form a negative opinion of someone that brings the subject of foreign aid into an argument .

I don't think you got the point at all Ana so no point in explaining it again but I do hope you don't ever give up your right to a political view too easily.

I am not naturally "confrontational" as you put it, far from it but I think those who are not in the least assertive would be beaten up and thrown away in some of the threads. I felt I was when I first came on so if you feel I have become what you choose to call "confrontational" I wonder who we should blame?

I agree, Gracesgran there was absolutely no need for the nastiness towards soop who is rarely, if ever, contentious, unlike many others.
And the apparently deliberate misspelling of soop so many times is quite nasty too. It's not as if she is a newcomer after all.

I must say I misunderstood what was going on at first because I didn't read all the thread and only thought that djen was offering G and Ts all round - that is what it sounded like. Wrong.

Keep laughing - until someone tells you that you are not allowed to express your views; that there are places you may not go - that is what the people on that thread did. It has happened before and, having seen some of the outpourings of "leave" people, here and elsewhere, I can see the possibility.

I, for one, will always fight such a lack of not just democracy but plain old humanity ... but you keep laughing - at me if it makes you feel better until someone stops you as you tried to stop others.

Gracesgran wasn't talking about the disgraceful post about soop, but about her own upset feelings when someone started a thread for Outers - although strangely enough I do recall whitewave starting a thread entitled something like 'Only left-wingers need read this'.

I don't think anyone got their knickers in a twist about it though, it was settled amicably enough.

The S.O.tells me that Farage put up posters today on his site referring to what happened in Orlando and saying things like 'do we want this to happen here'. Has anyone seen this...he has been made to take it down.
