EU - I'm in a quandary

I can't be the only one!

I'm minded to vote out - the main reason being the free movement of capital and labour has resulted in a very low-wage economy and zero-hours contracts (gravy train, inefficiency, lack of democracy, vested interests, etc., also play a part).

However, how can I be on the same side as Bozzer, Gove, Fox, Farage et al - I wouldn't normally give them the time of day. Apart from Gisela Stuart I can't think of any politician I'd be remotely connected to.

Surely the Big Beasts in politics, academia & sciences, unions, etc. can't all be wrong?

As I said, a quandary confused

I suggest the in lot put their paper up and I put mine up then the undecided can read both and see which one has been the most truthful during this last few months

As far as I'm aware, the owners of none of the above have made a £1.3 million donation to UKIP and become the mouth for the Leave campaign.

dramatictessa Wed 15-Jun-16 11:06:50

Seriously, you're putting the Express up as a candidate in the most truthful newspaper competition? Hope you haven't got a bet on itsmile
Futurelearn have an online course about the referendum. It is a welcome relief from all the hysterical hyperbole and very easy to navigate and understand. I recommend it to anyone who really wants to know what the EU is about, our role in it (including our influence) and what the consequences of remaining or leaving might be (might is the key word, no-one can predict with certainty).

whitewave Wed 15-Jun-16 11:28:32

I'm doing that as well

whitewave Wed 15-Jun-16 11:30:05

Any hyperbole that does take place and there is at least one with an obvious agenda gets squashed immediately.

practical Wed 15-Jun-16 11:50:13

I didn't say the Express was a paragon of virtue but many things I have read over the last months have come to be.

whitewave Wed 15-Jun-16 11:53:25

Like what?

Copied from a Facebook post by Calvin Morris.

A good friend of mine came up with a great idea. If you don't have the time/inclination to find out all the facts about the EU referendum (I don't blame you) and are possibly unsure which way to vote, perhaps knowing how other notable people are thinking could help out.

Here are a few that strongly believe the UK should remain a member of the EU:

• Governor of the Bank of England
• International Monetary Fund
• Institute for Fiscal Studies
• Confederation of British Industry
• Leaders/heads of state of every single other member of the EU
• President of the United States of America
• Eight former US Treasury Secretaries
• President of China
• Prime Minister of India
• Prime Minister of Canada
• Prime Minister of Australia
• Prime Minister of Japan
• Prime Minister of New Zealand
• The chief executives of most of the top 100 companies in the UK including Marks and Spencer, BT, Asda, Vodafone, Virgin, IBM, BMW etc.
• Kofi Annan, the former Secretary General of the United Nations
• All living former Prime Ministers of the UK (from both parties)
• Virtually all reputable and recognised economists
• The Prime Minister of the UK
• The leader of the Labour Party
• The Leader of the Liberal Democrats
• The Leader of the Green Party
• The Leader of the Scottish National Party
• The leader of Plaid Cymru
• Leader of Sinn Fein
• Martin Lewis, that money saving dude off the telly
• The Secretary General of the TUC
• Unison
• National Union of Students
• National Union of Farmers
• Stephen Hawking
• Chief Executive of the NHS
• 300 of the most prominent international historians
• Director of Europol
• David Anderson QC, Independent Reviewer of Terrorism Legislation
• Former Directors of GCHQ
• Secretary General of Nato
• Church of England
• Church in Scotland
• Church in Wales
• Friends of the Earth
• Greenpeace
• Director General of the World Trade Organisation
• WWF
• World Bank
• OECD

Here are pretty much the only notable people who think we should leave the EU:

• Boris Johnson, who probably doesn’t really care either way, but knows he’ll become Prime Minister if the country votes to leave
• A former Secretary of State for Work and Pensions who carried out a brutal regime of cuts to benefits and essential support for the poorest in society as well as the disabled and sick
• That idiot that was Education Secretary and every single teacher in the country hated with a furious passion for the damage he was doing to the education system
• Leader of UKIP
• BNP
• Britain First
• Donald Trump
• Keith Chegwin
• David Icke

So, as I said, if you can’t be bothered to look into the real facts and implications of all this in/out stuff, just pick the list that you most trust and vote that way. It really couldn’t be more simple.

And if you are unsure about leaving, don't.

Please repost this list, if you think it might help.

ww: "Like what?"

Christmas? Rain in June? The Queen's birthday?

practical Wed 15-Jun-16 12:20:35

lets turn this around because I am not dancing to your tune
how do you know what you say is true?

practical Wed 15-Jun-16 12:24:06

can't be bothered to read that list but just noticed a couple Obama oh yes he made a right mess of being president and tells us what to do. Farmers union yes the leader of the union wants in because he will get a gong but the farmers want out so a bullying union suits the bullying government

dramatictessa Wed 15-Jun-16 12:29:11

practical I don't know if what I say is true, but I usually look to experts in their field to back up my statements, (unlike Michael Gove).I don't consider the Express to be an expert in anything other than screaming, misleading headlines. What do you consider it to be an expert in?

whitewave Wed 15-Jun-16 12:43:14

I now know who you work for! "The Express"!

Your posts are as believable as the Express headlines.

whitewave Wed 15-Jun-16 12:49:01

mamie also on the leave side

Sorry I tried really hard to find someone sensible.

whitewave Wed 15-Jun-16 12:56:39

I can add some to Remain though

Natural Britain
RSBP

POGS Wed 15-Jun-16 13:09:12

Hers a list

Hypocrisy
Argument
Anger
Narcasism
Spin
Lies
Double Dealing
Fear Mongering
Propaganda
Bias
Loathing
Insult
Prejudice
Intolerance
Bigotry
Hyperbole
Fabrication
Myth
Backbiting
Distortion

No wonder some people can't decide.

varian Wed 15-Jun-16 13:11:50

Another one for the Remain list - the Leader of the SDLP, who like the Leader of Sinn Fein, does not want to see another wall built along the border of NI and the Irish Republic to "control our immigration". Mary Macaleese, former president of Ireland agrees.

Another one for the Leave camp - Vladimir Putin

whitewave Wed 15-Jun-16 13:19:29

What's that a list of pogs?

varian Wed 15-Jun-16 13:28:55

Another for the Remain list - Micheal Eavis, founder of the world's greatest pop festival who may be part of our generation but is certainly in touch with young people.

I've heard on the local news that Rolls Royce employees have been advised to vote 'Remain' if they want to safeguard their jobs. I can verify this later in the week as my SIL works for them. When people talk of 'getting our country back again' I wonder if they will recognise the country they have reclaimed sad. I also wonder what we will actually still have to export to our new markets, other than diggers and vacuum cleaners. I don't know many farmers, practical, but the one I do know is definitely voting 'Remain'. Obama; well, isn't he that useless American President who has been trying to get his country to see sense with regards their gun laws [or lack of them]. Phew, how much better it will be when Trump takes over.

Welshwife Wed 15-Jun-16 14:51:01

Obama is also the one who wanted a Healthcare system more like the NHS - but the people who would have benefitted the most were those against if!! He had hood ideas in many cases but the senate and congress were against him.

whitewave Wed 15-Jun-16 15:06:42

The republicans held the Senate. Obama has been hampered for the whole of his presidency. What a charmer he is though.

whitewave Wed 15-Jun-16 15:21:33

Channel 4 is reporting that Farage has been offered a place in Johnsons government and the Lords shock

So if I grab every penny I can from the tax payer, consistently lie, rely on xenophobic myths to persuade the voter etc. Will I be offered a lady ship? Well would I want to be seated with that lot of scoundrels is more to the point?

Devorgilla Wed 15-Jun-16 15:29:47

I'm another Remain. If I had been in any doubt Calvin Morris's list would nail it for me. Pretty weighty people on the Remain side there.
Yes, WW and dramatictessa, the Futurelearn course is good value.

daphnedill Wed 15-Jun-16 15:33:17

@whitewave

It's another £300 a day to add to your ill-gotten gains wink
