EU - I'm in a quandary

I can't be the only one!

I'm minded to vote out - the main reason being the free movement of capital and labour has resulted in a very low-wage economy and zero-hours contracts (gravy train, inefficiency, lack of democracy, vested interests, etc., also play a part).

However, how can I be on the same side as Bozzer, Gove, Fox, Farage et al - I wouldn't normally give them the time of day. Apart from Gisela Stuart I can't think of any politician I'd be remotely connected to.

Surely the Big Beasts in politics, academia & sciences, unions, etc. can't all be wrong?

As I said, a quandary confused

Excellent, granjura. I have passed it on to all my contacts.

Pity he didn't say this a lot eaarlier - although he might have done; we've just missed it.

Nevermind. Soontobe over. Then what?

granjura Sun 19-Jun-16 19:16:07

You make a good point DJ- should people be able to post in advance, by post- rather than on the day. New information comes up all the time. That lecture would perhaps have made all the difference to some. In Ye Olde days not long ago. all would have had to vote on the day- having listened to all the arguments to the last minute.

For anyone still in a quandary.

I am in my seventies and have voted in every election since I've been eligible to vote.

I've never voted conservative.

I've just watched David Cameron on QT EU special and I thought he made an excellent case for REMAIN. I hope that those still in a quandary watched it too. If you didn't see it check it out on BBC -i-player.

durhamjen Sun 19-Jun-16 20:01:04

It's also repeated at 11.15 tonight.

durhamjen Sun 19-Jun-16 20:02:23

I've never voted conservative either, varian. I do not call it voting conservative, because they are on both sides.

whitewave Sun 19-Jun-16 20:02:55

He was definitely better than Gove.

granjura Sun 19-Jun-16 20:05:59

Same here varian- albeit 5 years younger.

I find it bizarre that I am agreeing with Cameron, even Osborne- whom I would never vote for in a month, decade, century of Sundays- but I do agree with them and both make avery good case. I would just love to hear from Nick Glegg.

Jalima Sun 19-Jun-16 20:09:56

Yes, Cleggy has been very silent.
Obviously very pro-EU

We have heard from Tim Farron though, the new kid on the Lib-Dem block.

constitution-unit.com/2016/06/13/removing-references-to-eu-law-from-the-devolution-legislation-would-invoke-the-sewel-convention/

This is interesting. If Brexit win, the devolved governments will have to agree to remove all the references to EU law from their legislation. If they do not agree, probably because they vote to remain, there will be a constitutional crisis.

Jalima Sun 19-Jun-16 20:11:40

I have a postal vote gj (for a very good reason) but I will vote on the day, having discovered I can take it along to the polling station and put it in the box along with the others.

That's what we do if we are in the UK for any other election

Tegan Sun 19-Jun-16 20:17:03

I thought they gave him a really hard time tonight [harder than Michael'ignoretheexperts'Gove]and it really annoyed me when they wouldn't let him answer the question. Remain don't have as many soundbites to use as the leavers; I'm hoping that he really got his point across about the £350 million figure which, wrong as it may be, is now ingrained in peoples consciousness.

durhamjen Sun 19-Jun-16 20:19:39

Not surprised Clegg has been quiet. He was actually giving a speech in Edinburgh when they heard that Jo Cox had been shot.

www.libdemvoice.org/nick-clegg-on-the-brexit-betrayal-50981.html

Here if you want to read or listen to it.

Jalima Sun 19-Jun-16 20:21:06

but he has been quiet all the way through, or else not been reported.

David Dimbleby really needs to learn when to zip it and when to take charge.

Tegan Sun 19-Jun-16 20:34:35

'What really concerns me is that these people who might be lulled into thinking that this false utopia that the Brexiteers are promising might come to pass. There isn’t a land of milk and honey, there isn’t a promised land where all our problems will disappear if we leave the EU next Friday. No there isn’t.

What there is is political upheaval, constitutional gridlock, economic decline, international irrelevance. That’s not what I want, that’s not what we want. We don’t want that for our kids our our grandkids either'
...the last bit of Nick Cleggs very powerful speech. I implore people to read the whole speech through jens link.

durhamjen Sun 19-Jun-16 20:38:09

Listening to it shows how good he is, too.
Perhaps he'll give more speeches this week.
The polls are looking better today.

Soon to be over. Like he said what will we think if we wake up next Friday to find out we have lost all relevance in the world.

daphnedill Sun 19-Jun-16 20:39:48

I agree that Cameron spoke well. He didn't even go red in the face. It's a shame he doesn't speak like that at PMQs. I almost warmed to the man (almost hmm).

I also agree with you about Dimbleby, Jalima.

durhamjen Sun 19-Jun-16 20:40:14

I thought Dimbleby was very good at trying to counter Gove's speeches. Gove wouldn't have answered a single question properly if Dimbleby hadn't put him back on track.

JessM Sun 19-Jun-16 20:49:49

Good post Tegan.

Welshwife Sun 19-Jun-16 21:03:11

Nick Clegg's wife wrote about the problems Brexit will cause for the UK a couple of weeks ago - I think I saw a link to what she wrote on Facebook.
Off to read his speech now.

Jalima Sun 19-Jun-16 21:03:53

I didn't see Gove.

Clegg is very much a Europhile, he will be passionate about Remain of course.

durhamjen Sun 19-Jun-16 21:13:53

He worked for the European Commission for five years, so does know something about it. However, as we will be the first country to leave in this way, nobody knows what will really happen if we do leave, not even those who try to reassure us all will be fine.

varian Sun 19-Jun-16 21:19:07

The Libdems have always been virtualy ignored by the media except during the coalition years and they have hardly been included in the EU debate either on tv or the press.

Yet in spite of the disastrous 2015 election they have been more active than any other party in campaigning for Remain.

granjura Sun 19-Jun-16 21:27:14

I can well imagine that there are a lot of people now who wished they had voted for Nick Clegg- and the voice of reason in this nightmare scenario.

Jalima Sun 19-Jun-16 21:36:30

I think not gj
nothing to do with the EU
