I am sorry to be watching this ' unravelling' news report .

I hope she will be OK. Her poor family.

It is being reported that 2 people have been shot and 2 stabbings but no police confirmation as yet. The area is on lock down at the moment and there is a Primary School in the vicinity .

I hope the gunman is caught soon.

Yesterday, when I heard about this, I wanted the death penalty brought back.

Jalima Fri 17-Jun-16 18:48:42

Yes

It also brings back memories of all those others who lost their lives doing their public duties sad

micmc47 Fri 17-Jun-16 18:54:51

How sad. What started out as a thread on which people could express their condolences has now degraded into several ongoing and frankly pointless arguments and speculation about what did or did not motivate the attacker. Leave the speculation to the gutter press and wait for the trial transcript. All this petty point-scoring does a dis-service to Jo Cox's memory.

I'm sorry if you were offended, but that's the reality of what's going on and I find such groups dangerous and frightening. The police can't do anything. It's futile to pretend they don't exist.
dd not offended but I wonder if a forum like GN is an appropriate place to repeat them.
I agree, dangerous and frightening as are all extremist groups.

Why can't the police do anything?
Some posts may be upsetting or distasteful or express an unpopular view but are not necessarily criminal.
Others may be grossly offensive and therefore could well meet the threshold for prosecution.
Others may be part of a campaign of abuse or credible threats of violence against an individual or group of people which likewise may well lead to prosecution.

Possible far right motive. Counter terrorism unit now involved.

I did my usual Mum visit today, and found Mum in tears -she is a tough old bird and has seen much in her nearly 100 years.

This is what she said. I have paraphrased as she talked all afternoon
"I grew up in the 30's and watched people like Mosley trying and failing to convince the British of his cause. We new what decency was. We were pleased to help the kinder transport children and opened our hearts to them, because we knew what decency was. I helped fight the war against a greater enemy and we defeated the fascists, because we knew what decency was. We abhorred the Rivers of Blood speech because we were decent. We opened our hearts to the people from East Africa because we knew what decency was. We were decent because we understood what community and fellowship meant. I was so pleased that the Common Market would protect us from the atrocities of another war.
During the 80s suddenly we were told community meant nothing- we must look after ourselves as individuals.
Somehow since then we have gradually lost our sense of what is decent and what it means to care for our fellow human beings.

Why when a decent human being recognises the need in so many human beings - just as we did all those years ago she is killed?

I have lived too long.

durhamjen Fri 17-Jun-16 19:25:19

Whitewave, I love your mum.

Lazigirl Fri 17-Jun-16 19:29:31

I love her too.

From my post at 11.17 this morning up to now I have been watching this thread.

I am know not only saddened but to be honest I am shocked at some posters.

All I can say is if you think for one minute your political point scoring, your lack of respect and tone is a reflection of what path most people have chosen to take today then to be honest I will never understand you.

Thank goodness we have been able to witness decent, empathetic coverage by those who have only the desire to put aside politics, prejudice and hate in reflective thought for the sake of remembering what a terrible loss this has been.

I hope you can reassure your DM that not everyone has lost their sense of what is decent.

As anniebach has said ("One doesn't have to be a member of any extremist group to read, listen and then agree with them"), that is exactly what I think may have happened. You can imagine saddos sitting alone at their computers reading this awful stuff, and then deciding to take action off their own bat. Very sad.

durhamjen Fri 17-Jun-16 19:47:15

Please stop it, POGS.

Anniebach Fri 17-Jun-16 19:47:32

POGS, the only hate which has been spoken of is hate of the brutal murder , how do you expect politics not to be mentioned when the victim was a politician

durhamjen Fri 17-Jun-16 19:48:09

Yes, jingl, MPs have been warned of copycat attacks.

Jalima Fri 17-Jun-16 19:48:22

This is what I am finding confusing dd:
When a poster (accidently?) posted a link to a vile right wing, white supremacist website and I objected, it was MY post which was deleted

You objected to a link to a rightwing website which someone accidentally? posted, but then posted the actual vile words on another? rightwing forum.

If you objected to a link which people may or probably may not follow, why post an extract from another which you presumably object to also?

Jalima Fri 17-Jun-16 19:50:41

What on earth is wrong with that sentiment which I am sure most people will echo.

This was written by the man who was having dinner with Jo Cox's husband the night before she died.

durhamjen Fri 17-Jun-16 19:56:05

It's the rest of it, Jalima, as you well know. I am not political point scoring. Neither are others on here.

Jalima Fri 17-Jun-16 19:59:24

Thanks for the link djen
very moving, also disturbing.

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 17-Jun-16 20:01:29

I wouldn't know how to go about fighting these hate groups. How many ordinary people do?

Anniebach Fri 17-Jun-16 20:01:50

Jamila, predjuduce and hate has been streaming into our homes for months , we have a poster threatened just for delivering leaflets
