I am sorry to be watching this ' unravelling' news report .

I hope she will be OK. Her poor family.

It is being reported that 2 people have been shot and 2 stabbings but no police confirmation as yet. The area is on lock down at the moment and there is a Primary School in the vicinity .

I hope the gunman is caught soon.

I did quite a heckler speaking of brown envelopes but couldn't be that surely , it's been a joke for years

She also said something about not giving up the political fight so you will do good lazi welcome to the Labour family! I am not an active member -no time with elderly mum.

I will not join any political party but I will always remember her as an upholder of decency, fairness and compassion.

And yes, I do remember when she became an MP (she seemed so tiny but a force to be reckoned with).

sad

Sounds like the next Labour candidate for Jo's seat will have no opponents put up against them in the by-election. There is talk of her husband standing but maybe he will not want to right now.

Here is the main bit of what I said this morning. We had good TV coverage on Welsh BBC/S4C News (but fortunately not me being interviewed.)

Some may wonder why we are here this morning, given that we never knew Jo. I think the answer is when we elect an MP, we give them a little bit of our own political rights/freedoms and while they are in office they carry these rights and freedoms for us all. So an attack on an MP is an attack on all the people they represent. And after an election, when MPs form a new parliament they hold these rights and freedoms for the whole of our country. So a violent attack any of them and it looks like the attack was politically motivated – is an attack on the democratic freedoms of us all.
Many people these days are cynical about politics and politicians. They can’t be bothered to vote. They say they are all crooks. This is a great injustice to the many good hearted, hard working MPs who do their best for their communities. And many people don’t appreciate the local work that MPs do – holding weekly surgeries, listening to complex problems, and trying to help people by tackling all kinds of thorny issues. Jo was a fine example of an MP who wanted to serve her community and work towards a better world for people everywhere. On Ynys Mon we have another fine MP who shares these values – can we take a moment to express our thanks to out MP for all his hard work and committment on our behalf

And something more – we all know about the battle for women to get vote and enter parliament. It’s 85 years since Megan Lloyd George was elected for parliament in this constituency – the first Welsh woman MP. I think I’m right in saying that she’s been Anglesey’s only female MP. Women are still outnumbered 2:1 by men in the House of Commons. Those women who stand for office and get elected are still specially courageous, and it is an outrage and a shame on this country that in a week when one more was elected in Tooting, another was lost to us in this violent attack.
There is a pause this weekend in our political campaigning to stay in the EU. But the best way we can honour this fine woman is to work with renewed energy and enthusiam for the better world that Jo so longed for and worked so hard for.

Anniebach Sat 18-Jun-16 22:03:05

Applause, bravo, X

durhamjen Sat 18-Jun-16 23:12:14

Excellent, JessM.
Did you manage to tell them about the 50/50 petition in parliament?

Jp Cox's fund has reached over £500,000 in one day.

Granny2016 Sat 18-Jun-16 23:42:58

Lazigirl...I don,t understand why you would join a political party which you are disillusioned with.

Tegan Sat 18-Jun-16 23:56:56

Sometimes we lose our way politically and it takes something like this to make us realise that the core values that made us ally ourselves to a particular party are still there. This referendum has been a bit of a wake up call to a lot of people I think. And also made me realise that there are still things that need fighting for.

durhamjen Sun 19-Jun-16 00:04:38

Well said, Tegan.

Granny2016 Sun 19-Jun-16 00:34:56

Tegan....Leaders from all parties have spoken out with disgust at the murder of Jo Cox,and rightly so.
Surely all parties share the same core values in relation to this sad situation.

durhamjen Sun 19-Jun-16 01:29:31

Even Britain First and the EDL?

daphnedill Sun 19-Jun-16 02:01:23

UKIP's official statement was fairly half-hearted. They called the murderer mad and wrote that the murder was inexplicable, without any indication that he could have been inspired by their rhetoric.

They most certainly don't share the same core values that Jo Cox held.

Britain First has gone very quiet over the last 48 hours after their pathetic attempt at squirming.

Jo stood for fairness, compassion and tolerance and stood up to injustice. I undertsand Tegan's sentiments.

Pamish Sun 19-Jun-16 02:57:20

@JessM, that's a great statement. Somehow it is an attack on us all in a way that other murders are not. Never expected to find myself feeling that parliamentary democracy is sacrosanct - but it is. I would even have been disturbed by an attack on a far-right Tory. (I would make some exceptions.)

My MP had a police presence in his surgery yesterday.
.

JessM Sun 19-Jun-16 05:52:45

I think most MPs in favour of Remain will be feeling slightly nervous this week. And if there is a vote to Remain they will continue to be so perhaps. But they don't want to cut themselves off from people. Ours was out with us yesterday, mingling with supporters. Part of their job is to be accessible and they don't want bodyguards.

Anniebach Sun 19-Jun-16 08:42:23

I think Corbyn summed it up for me when he referred to labour as a family . It is our core values which we have always held which make it so for me. I was so lucky to be at the party conference when Mandela came to thank the Labour Party for it's part in the fight against apartheid. At another conference when Stephen Lawrence's father thanked the party and unions for their support in the Lawrence's fight for justice . There was the support for the miners during the strike , our core values have't changed .

Granny2016 Sun 19-Jun-16 09:10:09

Durhamjen....When I refer to our political parties,I refer to those that I perceive to be mainstream and viable.
So NO,I do not include EDL and Britain first.

You do love your nit picking don,t you !!!!

Anniebach Sun 19-Jun-16 09:40:35

UKIP?

whitewave Sun 19-Jun-16 09:45:05

What happens if it is 50/50?

Anniebach Sun 19-Jun-16 09:54:30

whitewave, more canvassing ? I feel a cloud of depression descending . On a serious note, the next few days will be torture , I truely fear a Brexit / UKIP win

trisher Sun 19-Jun-16 10:02:42

Anniebach I hope that young voters will turn out and tip it for Remain. I think many of them have registered and most will vote to stay.
JessM fantastic speech, so moving.
