I am sorry to be watching this ' unravelling' news report .

I hope she will be OK. Her poor family.

It is being reported that 2 people have been shot and 2 stabbings but no police confirmation as yet. The area is on lock down at the moment and there is a Primary School in the vicinity .

I hope the gunman is caught soon.

In the wake of the two recent atrocities (Orlando and the murder of Jo Cox), this is a very good article by Niall Ferguson. He compares the two in an interesting way and reaches what I think is a reasonable conclusion.

I didn't know till I read the article that he's married to Ayaan Hirsi Ali.

.trisher, I hope so, the young do seem to want to remain. My grandson is canvassing in Cardiff, he is in touch with his university friends in different parts of the country and it is a positive from them. My granddaughter - in her defence is nineteen and just home from university! - is texting from her bed most of the day , both are now considering politics following the bile from this campaign , the London Mayor campaign and the murder of Jo Cox , they want the world Jo Cox wanted , many young people do. Even the sixteen year old is helping with leaflet drops . It is their world now and I am hopeful this generation will make it a better world for all.

Again after viewing this thread I remain affirmed in my opinion that hate does not belong to any one political party, hate does not predominantly belong to the far right or the far left.

Hate belongs to ' the individual' but when 'collectively' there is a joining of like minded individuals who display hate it is corrosive and easy to observe.

Granny2016- in the meantime though, EDL and Britain First do vote for UKIP and Farage.

How Farage dares going on about the Fisheries Commission - when he has been picking up his fat cheque as MEP and attended ONE out fo FORTY TWO of the Fisheries Commission's meetings whilst he has been MEP.

ONE ! When he should have been there fighting for the British fishermen. Who btw do hve the second best quota for fishing in Europe, after Danemark.

Excellent article by Brendan Cox.

When he should have been there fighting for the British fishermen

Then surely that's all the more reason to take back control of our fishing industry and impose our own quotas.

Tegan Sun 19-Jun-16 13:03:20

So you condone the fact that he was paid to 'fight their corner' but pocketed the money and did very little to help them? Does that not make him somewhat two faced [or am I missing something here?]. Perhaps he gave his EU pay packet to the fisherman he should have been representing but is too modest to mention it.

merlotgran Sun 19-Jun-16 13:10:05

I haven't condoned anything. I'm not a UKIP supporter.

daphnedill Sun 19-Jun-16 13:10:48

I don't follow your logic. The UK has very generous quotas - second after Denmark.

If the UK is to maintain sustainable fishing stocks for future generations, it would have to impose the same quotas (or less). The allocation of quotas to specific ports is in any case a UK, not EU, responsibility. Many of the worst affected areas receive EU funding, which would not be guaranteed if the UK left the EU.

The EU has decided on an overall limit and Farage should have been fighting for a bigger share of that limit.

You can read more about fishing here:

I think many now believe if we leave the EU we will have complete freedom to do what we want, when we want and the countries of Europe will jump in and give us aid if we ask them too. We will have control over our own borders , no matter last week a sinking boat was rescued in the channel by the French, we had one boat in the channel they had twenty. And if the fencing, police patrols and camps are removed from Calais ?

Welshwife Sun 19-Jun-16 14:34:44

None of it bears thinking about!

granjura Sun 19-Jun-16 14:51:45

Posted on another thread too- but this non political lecture is really clear and non partisan- from one of the most experience EU Law experts in the UK, fromn Liverpool University. Not to be missed if anyone want to make an informed judgement<.

merlotgran Sun 19-Jun-16 14:59:28

My logic is simple.

Granjura complained that Nigel Farage (and no doubt many other MEPs) are picking up fat cheques for doing the bare minimum.

I agree with her.

This cannot happen if we leave the EU.

obieone Sun 19-Jun-16 15:06:49

Good point merlotgran.

Which I think, if I remember correctly, was his point in the dirst place. He said right from the start, that if he was elected, his platform was he wanted very little to do with it, and had plans to be a nuiscance there.
He think he has done exactly what he said he would do.

Tegan Sun 19-Jun-16 15:07:57

What about the MEP's that do work hard? Do we tar all of them with the same brush that is Farage. If he loathes the EU as much as he appears to be he should have done the decent thing and resigned sad.

granjura Sun 19-Jun-16 15:14:44

It shouldn't happen if anyone agrees to be on an electoral list to be MEP. Totally agree with Tegan- if he didn't want the job, the only honest thing would have been NOT to apply!!!

And then to complain the UK has no influence- when those who are supposed to represent us and indeed have an infuence on decisions- just pick up the cheque and do not do the job they were elected to do. How dishonest is that?

But I agree, if MEPs to not attend without good cause, on a regular basis- their cheque should be cancelled and their place up for re-election.

Same in any Government btw. On oru Council here, 2 nephews of the Maire are elected every few years by his cronies and never come to any Council meetings or the various Commissions they are supposed to work with. Totally wrong and dishonest.

merlotgran Sun 19-Jun-16 15:22:15

The MEPs that do work hard can campaign to become MPs.

MargaretX Sun 19-Jun-16 15:23:02

Was this the thread about Jo Cox? i didn't recognize it, but did read his article about immigration. very good This work will comfort him -I hope!

Gracesgran Sun 19-Jun-16 15:29:00

Did you watch the lecture granjura flagged up merlotgran? Just interested to know.

daphnedill Sun 19-Jun-16 15:46:05

Reposting the link, because it's well worth it. Twenty minutes, but worth every minute, especially for those still saying they don't know enough to make an informed decision.

Anniebach Sun 19-Jun-16 15:46:06

If Farage became a MEP. To make a nuisance of himself how has he managed this by rarely attended ? Did he think everything would be halted whilst they searched for him?

durhamjen Sun 19-Jun-16 15:50:42

"Tegan....Leaders from all parties have spoken out with disgust at the murder of Jo Cox,and rightly so.
Surely all parties share the same core values in relation to this sad situation."

Granny2016, you said ALL parties, twice. You did not exclude EDL and Britain First. Call that nitpicking if you like. Otherwise if you mean all main parties, say so. I did actually check to see if Britain First could count itself as a political party, and it does.

daphnedill Sun 19-Jun-16 16:05:30

Yes, it does, dj. Paul Golding stood in the election for London Mayor as a Britain First candidate. He was the one who turned his back on Sadiq Khan when he was elected.

durhamjen Sun 19-Jun-16 16:39:08

Yes, I remember that. Rude and uncouth.
I have just watched that link, then sent it on to all those I know on facebook, to watch then pass on.
Very impressive. Praise for Corbyn, too, about the law. I imagine Corbyn asked his friend Keir Starmer about that. Or is Corbyn a lawyer?
It should be required viewing, but only just over a million so far. How do they count that?
I ought to have asked my son to do an extra like for me on facebook. Is that possible?
Never mind.
Soon to be over.

Tegan Sun 19-Jun-16 16:40:49

Strange that the things I wrote about core values etc should cause Granny2016 to assume I was a Labour voter because I don't think I actually said which party I had allied myself to.
