.... almost want the other side to win, simply because the follow up to the result would be so much more interesting? Yes, I know that is completely irresponsible. hmm

Ceesnan Fri 24-Jun-16 07:07:00

Well I woke up to the news and am delighted. Sorry if that upsets those of you who voted to remain, but let's face it, if you had won you would feel like cheering from the rooftops too smile

annsixty Fri 24-Jun-16 07:05:22

God help us then.

Quite a few British people have looked at Greece and Spain and said 'that looks nice I'll go and live there' I wonder what will happen to them and their pensions now?

whitewave Fri 24-Jun-16 07:04:23

Good bags as long as your future doesn't include the likes of Farage.

daphnedill Fri 24-Jun-16 07:03:12

@thatbags

Try reading the financial pages. We're heading towards the same situation as Spain and Greece.

thatbags Fri 24-Jun-16 07:00:04

What a lot of doomsayers! I feel a sense of excitement about the political future that I haven't felt for a long while. Working class people have refound their voice and used their hard won democratic right. They looked at Greece and Spain and said Sod that!

Nandalot Fri 24-Jun-16 06:57:51

Apologies for all the errors in typing. Should have proof read.

thatbags Fri 24-Jun-16 06:57:36

Not quite the whole of Scotland wink

Nandalot Fri 24-Jun-16 06:56:32

Varian, I am with you. And what have we gained? The Brexit supporter on the BBC earlier started backtracking already on how long it would take from to make savings from not being in EU and on immigration controls. And Sturgeon is already talking about Scotland's desire to remain in EU. So Great Britain could become just England and Wales.

J52 Fri 24-Jun-16 06:54:51

I feel as if we have just jumped off the edge of a cliff! I cannot guess at what the future holds, but I'm keeping my 'Scottish passport' in a safe place.

A bit surprised by the Welsh result when so much of their modern infrastructure was paid for by the EU.

Anyway the phrase ' be careful what you wish for' comes to mind and I hope that the majority remain happy with their lot. We will see.

whitewave Fri 24-Jun-16 06:48:56

We will almost certainly lose the triple A which will make borrowing more expensive.

varian Fri 24-Jun-16 06:47:26

I have had a terrible sense of foreboding about this and have just woken up to the ghastly news- this is a sad day for the UK, for Europe and or the world.

Gracesgran Fri 24-Jun-16 06:44:03

We may loose our triple "A" rating and a comment from the markets "Stirling has burnt to the ground overnight".

oldgoat Fri 24-Jun-16 06:43:47

So the whole of Scotland voted to stay in. Wonder what the likely consequences will be?

Luckygirl Fri 24-Jun-16 06:43:32

There were bound to be DM readers who voted with an anti-immigration mindset - there was no way of avoiding that - it is human nature and I deprecate those who were motivated in this way as much as you do GandTea. I do indeed accept that this is what motivated some and I too feel ashamed on that score.

I am just saying that not every out voter should be tarred in the same way and that some thought though the issues in great depth and came to a different conclusion from yours.

My biggest concern, as I said above, is that such a momentous decision should have been decided by such a miniscule majority - this was always going to be the case whichever way the vote went and that to my mind is not democratic at all. Referenda are blunt instruments and have no place in a democracy in my view.

whitewave Fri 24-Jun-16 06:39:23

Hope our triple lock holds good, although there is no telling with the Brexit lot what will happen

GandTea Fri 24-Jun-16 06:37:19

"Racism was not the only motivation of those who wanted to leave."

The very fact that you accept that racism was part of he motivation of some makes me ashamed.

I suspect that anyone who is not white/British now feels less welcome in this country than they did.

The pound has now dropped to it's lowest 30 years

annsixty Fri 24-Jun-16 06:35:29

The old Chinese proverb/curse comes to mind
"May you live in interesting times"

whitewave Fri 24-Jun-16 06:34:26

Nobody is questioning the democratic process lucky it is how the hell we got where we are that id so bewildering, and the fallout thst is just as predicted beginning to happen

Luckygirl Fri 24-Jun-16 06:30:57

Racism was not the only motivation of those who wanted to leave.

The result is, as expected very very close indeed, which is what was inevitable and is why this referendum should never have happened - it can hardly be described as the will of the people when almost half the people disagree.

daphnedill Fri 24-Jun-16 06:29:23

wy = my (typo)

daphnedill Fri 24-Jun-16 06:29:07

@ Gracesgran

I spent most of wy working life as a languages teacher and belong to a number of language teacher sites. Approximately a third of language teachers in the UK are EU nationals and are now very worried about their future.

daphnedill Fri 24-Jun-16 06:26:49

Bank of England staffers have been called into work and told to expect to work over the weekend.

Gracesgran Fri 24-Jun-16 06:26:35

I feel more afraid this morning than I did when mortgages were 15% and we ended up with two houses for a short time.

I except this is the will of the people but comments like "this is our Berlin Wall moment" as I have just heard are ridiculous. I do not remember 48% of Germany being against the wall coming down and it must be remembered that this huge change turns on what appears to be just 4%. Add to that it appears the younger voters did, as expected, in the majority vote to remain.

The only thing Robert Peston could say as a positive was it compares to Margaret Thatcher coming to power and changing the proceeding consensus. He said that eventually the country got richer after years of upheaval and wiping out our industries. In my opinion we are still reeling from those changes and yes, the "country" got richer but many people have lost any sense of security and the opportunity for a reasonable income.

I await:

Many carers returning to their EU country and NHS staff going to work in more secure economies.
Increase in prices of everyday goods
Attacks on State Pensions in order to try and keep us on an even keel fiscally.

It is certainly not my "Berlin Wall" day.

daphnedill Fri 24-Jun-16 06:25:38

Indeed! Maybe we should send some of them to Berlin for a meeting with Merkel. With a bit of luck, Germany might take pity and annexe us. hmm
