.... almost want the other side to win, simply because the follow up to the result would be so much more interesting? Yes, I know that is completely irresponsible. hmm

I have been answering questions asked of me , including your own.

daphnedill Fri 24-Jun-16 04:53:26

OMG! Even Birmingham voted Leave. That's it then!

merlotgran Fri 24-Jun-16 04:50:59

I can't believe we stayed up all night. DH is now cooking breakfast. The dogs and cat think we've gone mad.

I also can't believe the result!!

WOW!!

daphnedill Fri 24-Jun-16 04:50:28

@ww

Yes, it will. Glad I wasn't intending to go abroad this Summer.

My daughter has a Euro bank account - she's going to be quids in - I think this will be a case of Mum sponging off daughter.

Maggiemaybe Fri 24-Jun-16 04:49:09

Yep. I'm off to bed now. No more to see here sad

Please listen carefully! I AM NOT A LABOUR SUPPORTER!! I think the fact that the party is so weak is a factor, but not the only one. Liverpool and Manchester, for example, are solidly working class Labour, but voted Remain.

Please don't turn this into an anti-Labour Party rant.

The pound has fallen to its lowest level since 1985, which will have repercussions for interest rates and public debt - just as the 'experts' predicted.

The EU has far less control than people seem to believe and I wish more than anybody else that people understood more about the EU and how it works. People obviously have an opinion, but it's just not based on fact.

I just don't know where the UK is heading now and I'm genuinely distressed and fearful for the future of my country. I think there are some dark and gloomy days/years ahead.

whitewave Fri 24-Jun-16 04:47:08

B of E will probably have to take emergency measures.

obieone Fri 24-Jun-16 04:44:56

Contrary to what a lot of people seem to think of me on gransnet, in some ways I am far from living in a bubble.

10 miles to the left of whre I live, there are many expensive, 4 million type houses.
If I go 10 miles to the north or east of where I live, lets just say it is not like that!

If I go 10 miles south, I would say that the people are "ordinary"?

I regularly go, socialise, shop etc in all of these areas.

POGS is right. Labour is in the London bubble. It needs to wake up.

Where I dont probably agree with POGS, is that I dont think Corbyn has done too badly? He was a bit between a rock and a hard place. I dont really think his heart is in Europe really, and I would guess or like to guess that he has been feeling a bit disloyal to the grass roots that voted him in.

whitewave The exhaustion's set in!

Maggiemaybe Fri 24-Jun-16 04:42:52

I've been up all night, WhitehaveN. I said I wouldn't, but it's had a horrible fascination for me.

whitewave Fri 24-Jun-16 04:42:26

Yes pogs of course the result will be accepted, but I am so worried what's ahead. Not just now but in the years. I hope and pray that history doesn't show a steady decline as I am so fearful it may. The sunny uplands are by no means certain.
When the lines of Farage can claim victory I shake

POGS Fri 24-Jun-16 04:41:21

Estimated 73% turn out , higher than I thought it would be.

rubylady Fri 24-Jun-16 04:40:13

We're leaving!

whitewave Fri 24-Jun-16 04:38:27

Has anyone been up all night? I've been up since about 1.30. Had about 3 hrs sleep.

Maggiemaybe Fri 24-Jun-16 04:33:32

Well, I came to bed 45 minutes ago, but couldn't sleep, so am watching on my iPad as the results roll in. Might as well have stayed downstairs with the TV. Can't leave it now though.

jevive73 Fri 24-Jun-16 04:32:52

So be careful what you wish for jinglebells. Looks like we will be leaving the eu. Oh dear......

POGS Fri 24-Jun-16 04:32:39

Labour have flipped flopped between saying sorry for the high level of immigration under it's watch to Corbyn saying he is happy for unlimited immigration. The working class have to live with the consequence and they have not been heard. They have just been called racist by the party they thought would understand the issues they experience because of it.

Employment has been boosted but take just one thing Corbyn has been keen to mention, The Posted Workers Directive, produced by the EU but works against countries such as the UK who pay higher wages than other countries, particularly the Eastern European countries. Corbyn says we must work from within to get rid of it, it has already being revised! The point however is neither Labour nor Tory governments could do a thing about it, their hands were tied.

It doesn't matter which party had been in power it is the fact the EU has too much control and people have voiced that opinion in the referendum. It is still close to call although I think they will call it soon for Leave. Believe it or not I reluctantly voted remain today , I always said I was head in, heart out and head won today.

How will Brexit help, God knows and I am as concerned as anybody. It could go either way and there will no doubt be
difficult times ahead but democracy has been exercised and we have to accept that.

rubylady Fri 24-Jun-16 04:25:49

This poor guy on tele for IN looks really deflated, poor chap.

rubylady Fri 24-Jun-16 04:24:01

Went to wake DS up so that he could come and watch and he sleepily, grumpily told me to shut the door! He did vote though, his first time.

whitewave Fri 24-Jun-16 04:23:05

I am awash with tea.

rubylady Fri 24-Jun-16 04:21:42

I haven't insisted on anything! angry

I have also written that I don't have much confidence in Labour, although I'd like to. I agree that Labour has been very weak on it all and I think both Conservative and Labour are going to have a new leader soon.

I do understand the complaints of people who resent the London-centric bubble, being a Northerner myself, who couldn't find a job and had to move South, but the people outside that bubble actually benefit from EU finance. Even fishermen now have a deal from the EU which is beneficial to them.

But...but...I don't live in a working class area, there are few immigrants and unemployment is low. Why did they vote Leave? On the face of it, they don't have anything to complain about. The disaffected working class theory doesn't explain it all.

I really don't understand what people think they will gain from leaving the EU.

whitewave Fri 24-Jun-16 04:04:55

POGS I know what you are saying, but don't you think this goes back further than that?
Being that we have had a Tory government for the past 6 years what could Labour have done?
Of course the working class are fed up. We have had austerity on top of everything else and they are the class that always suffers.
How wil Brexit change that?

POGS Fri 24-Jun-16 03:53:27

You can keep insisting it is all down to the Tories being at fault till the cows come home.

Labour have not been listening . I know Corbyn is highly respected by some but it is said , again by some, Labour haven't had a look in with the media and haven't got their case for remain over. Labour haven't got it's case for remain over because Corbyn has been weak, weak , weak. He has elected not to debate , unless it is with his core supporters in attendence or the under 30's on Sky. He went on The Last Leg and admitted his support for the EU was 7.1/2 out of 10. He has said so much against the EU he has actually been a candidate for the Leave Campaign. He has looked like a man who has been scared to get stuck in and chose to take the easy route with only his cronies getting near him

Labour have not been listening to what the working class have been saying. Labour have concentrated on Climate Change and Workers Protection as reasons to Remain. The problem is Corbyn has been saying about protection for all Europeans but he has lost the ear of those in the UK who know from experience the EU has not been good for those who vote for Labour and see EU workers undercutting their wages, seeing jobs moved to other EU countries because the EU has paid for this to happen.

The rhetoric from Remain calling people racist/xenophic has been negative for Labour especially. The working man does not appreciate the likes of Geldoff targeting working class fishermen. Labour are in a Westminster , London centric bubble and you are seeing the Labour vote has ignored the call to unite behind Remain because it is disconnected from it's leadership. People are showing they are fed up with a political elite who are not listening , they are not as thick as some people would believe but they know what is happening all around them and they want less beaurocracy and feel there is genuinely too much interference from the European Parliament /Commission and Court.

The pound is now down 8% - its biggest one day move ever.
