Would Newcastle's student population have had something to do with it?

And why did Merseyside (both sides of the river) and Manchester vote to remain?

DJ, I suspect that the fear of an immigrant population may be worse that the actuality.

It seems despite the efforts of the many labour MP's working to keep the party together it is not Hunt and Benn but MacDonald and Corbyn who who want to split the party , seems they msy succeed. Oh gosh I will be without a home

Anniebach I wonder why you are blaming Corbyn for the Labour party split and not the MPs who have refused to work with him. It seems to me that you are joining a concerted media campaign to get rid of him. It may be that his appeal to younger and more activist people is precisely what is being complained about by the MPs. Younger people have grown up with the media and media-savvy politicians, and recognise that in not being able to do the quick, spin-doctored response Corbyn is offering something different.

I agree fully GrandTea , when the referendum campaign started I posted that I was telephone canvassing ,Wales and England, and it was immigration which spoken of by a large majority

Newcastle historically has a record of being out of step with many of its neighbours. The student population may be responsible for part of the vote. The Universities undoubtedly are. They are a huge employer, many people rely on them and know that a substantial number of the students are from abroad. The biggest building projects in the city are those to provide student accommodation.

I think what has been said for so long by some is finally hitting home!

Immigration was certainly the only reason that was given round here (N Shropshire) when I was canvassing. This is an area which has minimal number of immigrants! But a very high number of Daily Mail readers

Badenkate, Shropshire was one of the English counties I covered by telephone canvassing and yes immigration kept coming up

Living in a seaside town close to Newcastle we have a very small immigrant population. In fact hardly any at all . Which is exactly how I would like it to stay. We hardly have enough jobs for the young people who were born and bred here as it is.

If you don't have any jobs, it's highly unlikely you'll have an influx of immigrants, so I'm sure your bubble is safe.

Pay no attention to phrases like 'your bubble' Gilly , there are others on GN who disagree with you but could put their point over in a much better way.

Do you know what daphnedill I would rather live in my (safe)"bubble" than live in some kind of idealistic cuckoo land . Our town was a ship building And coal mining town until those industries were decimated by various governments ( I could not point the finger at either one) highly skilled manufacturing is still the main employment in the area although on a much smaller scale .
