Andrea Leadsom

I have to say that, despite her denials, I am disgusted that Andrea Leadsom is using her fecundity as a means to improving her chances of becoming Prime Minister. After what Britain has just gone through with the deceitful and destructive Brexit campaign, can it be true that a potential Party leader begins her campaign by making unfair and unkind comparisons in order to gain ground?
She now claims that her comments have been taken out of context - how can anyone refer to that specific difference between yourself and another in any other context? I despair.

Doesn't matter which (witch) of them gets in, they will be both in it for themselves not the country.
I don't agree with TM in everything she says and does, but I do think she has what she believes is the country's best interests at heart.
And I do think she is what we need at the moment (until we have an election at any rate).

specki4eyes We are in this situation, like it or not, and I am trying to be optimistic and think that TM is our best hope of negotiating a reasonable exit deal.

Unfortunately, I am not a member of any party, and I cannot vote so what I think doesn't really matter.

I just read Quizqeen's post. Theresa May was unable to have children but I find it ludicrous that she links Heath's behaviour with his lack of children. So, as I didn't like Gordon Brown removing the free ten percent tax band for the poorly paid, should I assume that anyone with a glass eye will be a poor Chancellor or leader?? I don't like to be argumentative, but felt I had to on this occasion.

Mardler123 Sun 10-Jul-16 20:40:21

I would not be influenced to vote for a man because he kept on presenting himself as a husband and father. Either he is up to the job or not. Why should it be different fo a woman?

Jalima Sun 10-Jul-16 20:43:54

a scary careerist who claims to have a hot line to God. I'm a socialist

I think, in fact that that was Tony Blair who claimed to have a hotline to God Jaxie.
When he took us into an illegal war that all the idiots such as us marched against, or protested against if we were unable to march.

Tegan Sun 10-Jul-16 21:09:29

I was wondering what she had said about God; I think it was Andrew Marr last week who asked her if she'd had a voice from God or something like that...I did wonder what he was referring to. She must have said something about it in the past. Made me think of the Francis of Assisi quote from Mrs T.

Didn't a lot of women vote for Thatcher because she had children, run a house and job, so therefore she knew what it was all about.

Barmyoldbat Sun 10-Jul-16 21:33:46

She is also for abolishing maternity pay and rights for women working in small firms. Also wants to cut rights and benefits for part time workers, of whom most are women. Neither are very family friendly. Despise the woman

Well said, Daphne Broon! Ms Leadsom seems to stretch the truth in many different directions, as well as making sly digs at her rival for party leadership. Untrustworthy!

I can't believe that AL wants to bring back fox-hunting. How can anyone be in favour of inflicting terror and agony on an innocent animal? What is the difference between fox-hunters and people who run dog-fights for betting purposes, which is illegal and frowned on by nearly everyone? I thought this country was becoming civilised at last when fox-hunting was abolished, and here is AL advocating its return! She seems like a very intransigent person who will say anything if it will gain her votes! I certainly wouldn't vote for her. She doesn't seem honest with her CV, and as for The row about TM not having children - well, that is really punching below the belt!

We could club together to buy a couple of single tickets for some of our politicians...failing that, we could throw them in Room 101.

Granny2016 Sun 10-Jul-16 21:52:00

@ Jaxie...Sadly though,we would all get her!

Granny2016 Sun 10-Jul-16 21:55:53

@ jeveve73.....I didn,t realise Gordon Brown had a glass eye !!!!!

Jalima Sun 10-Jul-16 22:05:50

He had a detached retina from a rugby injury when he was a teenager and lost the sight in his left? eye; he nearly lost the sight in the other one too but that was saved.

I remember when people criticised his writing on letters to bereaved families of servicemen and women; this was probably a result of his poor vision and not carelessness.

Primrose 25 - her views on employee rights goes back to a statement she made in the House of Commons in 2012 and I quote
"I envisage there being absolutely no regulation whatsoever,"
"No minimum wage, no maternity or paternity rights, no unfair dismissal rights, no pension rights—for the smallest companies that are trying to get off the ground, in order to give them a chance."
She was referring to companies with 3 employees or less and while I acknowledge that maternity rights can be problematic for the small business "no unfair dismissal rights" "No minimum wage" Really??
That CV? I would pay to see Claude Littner (Sir Alan Sugar's henchman) tackle her on that.
Oh and Disgruntled I know a lot of nice Scottish Islands. Won't help you though as we have Nicola Sturgeon already plotting IndyRef2 which could cause an even bigger mess North of the border. I have long been wondering where there is a safe place is to retreat to and escape the lunacy. I'll let you know if I think of anywhere.

Candelle Sun 10-Jul-16 22:50:17

maglil55: can you please advise the fruits of your research? I think I want to join you.

This country is going to he*l on a handcart and I, too, fear for the future of my family.

As to Mrs Leadsom - I fear she is a duplicitous woman who will say whatever the person to whom she is speaking wants to hear - and then sleep well at night.

Theresa May is an extremely hard-working MP with a proven track record who may..... be able to undo some of the terrible damage inflicted on our poor beleaguered country or at least steer us through the next few years of uncertainty.

Carolpaint Sun 10-Jul-16 22:56:54

So relieved that TM is child free, so no future panics when your son gets lost in the desert or is implicated with other Harrow boys in attempting to get a coup off the ground in Africa. AL also says she is not a feminist, as a badge of pride, is this the sort of statement that endears to the Tory faithful in the Shires? So she does not believe in equality? All we want is an equal chance. On the Radio 4 today one of her ex bosses said she sat at a desk outside his office and worked out pay deals for traders, sounds like an accounts clerk. All a bit shabby

If Leadsom gets to be PM that will be the final nail in the UK's coffin

Tegan Sun 10-Jul-16 23:03:44

I do wonder if Cameron [and a few others] had a long term plan to get Theresa May the PM job? Possibly the only plan thus far. By the way, does anyone ever remember a PM being booed at a sporting event before??

maglil55 Sun 10-Jul-16 23:30:44

Candelle - politics.co.uk latched onto her statement from 2012 to the House mainly because it is a contradiction of what she said at her launch (I don't know if I am allowed to include links?)
She does have form for contradicting herself - Hansard Society’s annual parliamentary affairs lecture 2013 she said “I don’t think the UK should leave the EU. I think it would be a disaster for our economy and it would lead to a decade of economic and political uncertainty at a time when the tectonic plates of global success are moving." Andrew Marr raised it with her last Sunday and she defended her turn around by saying it had been a journey.
Sorry if this all seems a bit boring. 39 years of Financial Services tends to turn you into a bit of a researcher. Were I still working Andrea Leadsom would have provided me with a rich vein of comedy material on what not to do and she has come out with some crazy statements. But there again it seems a lot of people don't care about facts now. Gee I'm depressing myself.

Carolpaint Sun 10-Jul-16 23:42:22

Thank you Tegan for raising the PM being booed today, Andy Murray was being pleasant but the boos of some of the crowd seemed churlish. Yes, it may be, there is a vague plan to make it seem an election rather than a coronation, who knows, the Chinese curse is: May you live in interesting times, ouch.

Lepidoptera Sun 10-Jul-16 23:54:40

I know two retired Conservative councillors, plus three or four others who might be party members, and I'm pleased to say that they are all too sharp to be conned by Leadsom. They might even find TM a bit right-wing.

maglil55 Mon 11-Jul-16 00:03:26

Oh and Candelle I still haven't come up with a lunatic free haven. It has also dawned on me that AL cannot compare herself to Margaret Thatcher - that lady was famously "not for turning". AL has turned so often I'm amazed she isn't constantly dizzy. I did however come across someone who described her as Maggie with a Chainsaw - now that does create a picture grin

suzied Mon 11-Jul-16 10:38:20

Heard a commentator on the radio playing a clip of AL before the referendum saying the £ will stabilise and strengthen on June 24th. Meanwhile, the £ is lower than the Argentine peso and bitcoin in the currency stability list 2 weeks on. Shows how accurate her economic forecasting is.

Zorro21 Mon 11-Jul-16 10:46:32

Black Ops - Angela Leadsom was at least not afraid to campaign in favour of Brexit, whereas May hid behind the sofa.

May has also spent numerous years as Home Secretary doing absolutely nothing to ensure the UK's borders were controlled.
