New thread folks!

Helps keep track of new cabinet and her early days. Will be interesting.

Jalima Fri 16-Sept-16 21:34:14

Newcastle didn't vote for Brexit, either.
51% leave 49% for

Fairly close I would say!

MaizieD Fri 16-Sept-16 17:46:34

It does seem an odd thing to infer, though.

POGS Fri 16-Sept-16 14:09:10

What does it matter which town/city voted Brexit or Remain?

Gracesgran Fri 16-Sept-16 14:04:43

Oh come on Jane. You said Jen was "economical" with the truth which is a euphemism used in parliament where the are not allowed to say people have lied. Jen dignified that with a reply.

Harrogate - my nearest town - voted remain too. Now go and look at the map to see how the rest of North Yorkshire, etc., voted Jane. That is your job not mine; mine it to put over my argument yours is, yes, to clarify that and add more details but not, I would say, by saying someone else is "economical with the truth", unless you are happy to put people's backs up.

durhamjen Fri 16-Sept-16 13:58:38

You have done, Jane!
Saying you are not going to respond is a response.

janeainsworth Fri 16-Sept-16 13:57:14

Don't tell lies, Jane

Sorry Jen but I'm not going to dignify your post with a response.

durhamjen Fri 16-Sept-16 13:37:06

Don't tell lies, Jane.
Daphne said the people of Liverpool, Manchester and the Wirral didn't vote Brexit.
I said Newcastle didn't vote Brexit either.

Did I say the whole of the north east?
I said Newcastle, which is the truth.
Give people on here some intelligence to know that Newcastle isn't the whole of the north east.

Did you think that Daphne meant the whole of the North West?
Have you told her off for saying that?

janeainsworth Fri 16-Sept-16 13:30:17

It wasn't the whole truth Jen.
You appeared to be trying to give the impression that the people of the north-east en masse voted to remain - they didn't.

durhamjen Fri 16-Sept-16 13:21:49

Why is that being economical with the truth?
You agree that Newcastle voted to remain.
I said Newcastle didn't vote for Brexit either.
That is the truth, isn't it?

Daaphne said Manchester, Liverpool and the Wirral didn't vote Brexit.
Are you going to suggest that she was being economical with the truth because she didn't mention the rest of the North West?

MaizieD Fri 16-Sept-16 13:15:17

funny you should mention Sunderland. I was talking to someone yesterday who reckoned they had been told by someone fairly senior at Nissan, Sunderland that they wouldn't leave the UK even if we Brexited because a)The workforce was the most efficient in their European plants and b) the inevitable devaluation of sterling would mean that they would still be profitable even if there were a 10% tariff on cars sold to Europe.

I offer this without comment...but...

I wonder why the Japanese are saying the opposite?

janeainsworth Fri 16-Sept-16 12:57:22

jen you are being economical with the truth, aren't you?
Newcastle might have voted Remain, but Northumberland didn't and North Tyneside didn't.
Prize for daftest of the lot must surely go to Sunderland who voted for Brexit, despite it jeopardising the jobs of the thousands who work at Nissan sadsad

Gracesgran Fri 16-Sept-16 12:08:40

No Jen - or at least that is not what I heard him say - in the full interview I think he mentioned Leeds and Sheffield ... we shall see.

Sorry MaizieD if I gave you a shock with my little joke (OK - it wasn't funny). I think I was just surprised to see him. I must admit although I am not a fan of his I am happy for him to bring the North back to the table as TM certainly hasn't mentioned it.

Riverwalk Fri 16-Sept-16 12:08:27

I heard that Jane! grin

I loved Brian Redhead - just checked, 22 years since he died sad

durhamjen Fri 16-Sept-16 12:03:30

Newcastle didn't vote for Brexit, either.

janeainsworth Fri 16-Sept-16 12:00:09

Riverwalk Nick Robinson was interviewing George Osborne this morning about the Northern Powerhouse, and Nick took the opportunity to reminisce about the time the late great Brian Redhead read out the weather forecast.
'Bright in the north, dull in the south,' announced Brian. 'like the people.'
grin

daphnedill Fri 16-Sept-16 11:45:42

Manchester, Liverpool and the Wirral DIDN'T vote for Brexit!

Riverwalk Fri 16-Sept-16 11:43:46

George Osborne - Prime Minister of the North of England?

Serves them right for voting for Brexit! grin

durhamjen Fri 16-Sept-16 11:40:21

That's the North West, not the North East, I presume. We have been sensible and said we don't want an elected mayor, so we've been told we are out of it.
Phew!

MaizieD Fri 16-Sept-16 11:25:28

George Osborne - Prime Minister of the North of England?

I am not one given to prayer but 'Dear God, please spare us that.

Please...'

Gracesgran Fri 16-Sept-16 08:45:42

George Osborne - Prime Minister of the North of England? It was good to hear that the Northern Powerhouse is not yet dead though.

Too much to read so I had better opt out of this thread!

(although we don't just export Marmite, Bird's custard and British sweets to Australia!)

daphnedill Thu 15-Sept-16 18:05:40

@Jalima

No problem! The UK's total exports are worth about £500 billion a year, so £10 billion is very insignificatnt.

durhamjen Thu 15-Sept-16 14:51:36

www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2016/sep/15/hinkley-point-c-nuclear-power-station-gets-go-ahead

Theresa May has given the go-ahead for Hinkley point.
Brexit means British sovereignty, so we let China build three nuclear power plants in the UK.

Jalima Wed 14-Sept-16 21:16:37

apologies dd, you gave a percentage and I skim read it as an amount (re exports)

Jalima Wed 14-Sept-16 21:13:34

UK exports to Australia accounted for £10 billion three years ago:
Top 10 UK exports to Australia (2014):

road vehicles
medicines and pharmaceuticals
general industrial machinery
specialised machinery
professional and scientific instruments and apparatus
power generating machinery and equipment
electrical machinery and appliances
beverages
apparel and clothing accessories
metal manufactures

A bit more than in a post above.
