Brexit watch, round 2

Can someone explain to me why millions of leave voters aren't protesting about the fact that they appear to have voted for a pack of false promises? All I can assume is that they've got their heads buried in the sand and/or they're not even interested in what's happening because, unlike us remainers they've 'moved on'.

Because absolutely nothing has been decided yet. What's the point in leaping up and down stamping feet about something that hasn't yet happened?

I think that Theresa May is struggling as much as any other 'Remainer' to pinpoint just what Brexiters were voting for.

Most of the Leave voters I know just said they were sick of unelected Brussels bereaucrats telling us what to do. Nothing about controlling immigration.

As we already have immigration controls on non-EU immigrants and, as far as I can see, any free trade agreement with the EU will be dependent on our accepting free movement of EU citizens; so no 'control' there.

If any Brexiters are able to point me to a workable solution to this seemingly insurmountable problem I'd be happy to read it.

If the Leave voters you know are representative of the majority, then most Brexiteers aren't concerned about immigration at all. Perhaps someone should tell the government...

I thought that the government had been 'told' by the Leave vote. That's what the 'Leavers' keep saying. But they don't really say much else. So the govt seems to be struggling to make sense of it all.

But you just said most of the Leave voters you know aren't bothered about immigration...

So what did they vote for?

'Taking back control'. But, if a lot of the votes weren't about immigration why has there been a rise in hate crime against immigrants and why are so many wanting to return to their homelands now?

Arron Banks, who funded the Leave campaign, recently tweeted:

Farage said something similar before the vote. He wasn't bothered about any plan, but just wanted to leave.

Banks says Singapore and Hong Kong are the model.
Unfortunately they are the ones selling cheap imports to the UK.
Stuff like dresses and nightwear that are easily set on fire, toys that still have lead paint, phonechargers that blow up, lots of stuff we can buy from the pound shops, but I bet he never does because he's loaded, loaded enough to be able to fund another political party.

This thread could continue with speculation until the cows come home ( and most likely will) but I prefer to wait until plans/policies are in place before either applauding or groaning.No doubt the government will try and get the best deals it can, that's what we pay them to do, to represent the will of the people.

But in a democracy the people have a right to try and influence policies and plans before they're presented as a 'fait accompli'.

No, I really don't want to take notice of Arron Banks, but he can't be ignored. Allegedly he spent £11 million on the Leave campaign and boasted that he did it in a way so that it didn't all count as electoral spending. The man has money and he's prepared to spend it to get his own way

Carswell also wrote a book about Hong Kong and Singapore being models for the UK. Fortunately, Carswell and Banks hate each other, but there are others who have similar ideas. If the UK goes down that route, it will have cheap labour and the majority will work in the sweat shops of the world, while the 'fat cats' use the UK as the biggest tax haven of them all.

Apparently it's fine to criticise Leave voters for being 'stupid' and to imply that they should know exactly what's going to happen and when with regard to Brexit, but it's not OK to point out that it can only be speculation at this stage.

No, Ana, I don't think it's OK to call people who voted Leave stupid. However, it's understandable when people can't even articulate why they voted as they did and we know that many of the promises were hot air. That really isn't democracy in action.

I do find it unpleasant when those who voted Leave gloat and say things such as 'You lost. Haha! Suck it up!' (and, yes, I have seen those very words on other sites and the attitude is implied in some comments on GN). This isn't a football derby, although it's tempting to think some people see it that way.

The foreign media I've looked at don't view Brexit as in 'how hilarious!' but 'The British are nuts. Why on earth have they done it?', which is a sentiment shared by some in the UK.
