Trump. How could all those people vote for him?
Ochone ochone (Gaelic lamentation)

Jalima Fri 11-Nov-16 19:16:35

who will take over? we know already, don't we?

whitewave Fri 11-Nov-16 19:16:05

It depends who is in the Senate and House of Representatives. Obama had an impossible struggle, Trump has no excuse.

Jalima Fri 11-Nov-16 19:14:56

^How can rioting, setting fire to things, criminal damage be seen as merely expressing upset or having the right to challenge the vote result?
^
It cannot POGS, it negates everything the Democrats claim to hold dear.

That hysterical woman on QT last night did the Democrats and Hillary Clinton a disservice by her refusal to listen to anything that anyone else said.
I hope that is not typical, because, if so, they have a long road back.
sad

Yet - despite 8 years (nearly) in office - Obama has failed to close down Guantánamo Bay.

So how much power does the President really hold?

Anniebach Fri 11-Nov-16 19:10:59

Anya, there must be so many in fear and nothing can be done to help them , I thought of Jesse Jackson crying when Obama became president, I would think he is crying now but for opposite reasons

The words democracy and democratic are being bandied around willy nilly in the media, in general discussions and also here. While the UK electoral system leaves much to be desired, the US system also needs revision if it is to be truly democratic. It worked well in the 18th century when it was devised, but the country is now a very different place and the percentage of presidents-elect who did not receive the majority of popular votes has increased.

State, not Federal laws decide who may be disenfranchised because of a criminal record and those laws also define what sort of criminal record qualifies a citizen to lose his or her vote. Consequently, a disproportionate percentage of black men have lost their right to vote – and this would have made a substantial difference in some swing states (e.g. Florida). It does not seem democratic to me that once someone has served a prison term he should be continue to be punished by disenfranchisement.

In this particular election I also think that the actions and statements of James Comey should come under scrutiny. He may even be liable to prosecution under the Hatch Act but I don't know enough about it to be sure.

Thanks Annie for actually reading a post by someone who might actually suffer under Trump's reign.

durhamjen Fri 11-Nov-16 17:40:24

This is an interesting idea. Has America relinquished world leadership, and if so, who will take over?

Anya, your post was so sad but so true

durhamjen Fri 11-Nov-16 17:16:11

This is how some other countries saw it.

politicalscrapbook.net/2016/11/donald-trumps-first-tweet-after-being-elected-attacks-the-media-for-inciting-protesters/

This is funny. Trump says it was a very open election. Really? It was a very nasty and vicious election. Somehow I don't think the media needed to incite the protesters.

For all 'remainders'.

MaizieD Fri 11-Nov-16 16:07:42

So let me get this straight. Remain voters are saying the EU Referendum was won by a narrow margin so should basically count for nowt. The Alternative Vote Referendum was won by a NO vote of 69% to YES vote of 32.1% but that still does not suit their remit so they want another vote, another vote, another vote until presumably THEY get THEIR way.

Far from getting anything straight, POGS, you have twisted what I said into something so distant from its meaning that I hardly recognise it.

granjura Fri 11-Nov-16 15:59:21

'We the people' is such a strange concept- as is democracy.
Under the French election system, Clinton would have been elected with 55$% of the vote- and she did get more votes than Trump.

And for 40 years I voted in every election in the UK, knowing full well that, due to the First Past the Post system and the Constiuency I lived in- my vote would go straight into the bin. When I explained that yesterday to Swiss and French friends at an outing- they were totally dumbstruck and said- but surely THAT is not democracy at all. You should have seen their faces when I explained about the House of Lords afterwards !!!

Thought I'd throw this post from a black, American friend who posted this on FB

" So many are in shock and I would like to add my opinion for what it's worth. Since the election was so close, I prefer that Trump won just to shut his people up about what he could have done had he won and also to spare Hillary and the rest of us the pain of listening to the Right Wing Pundits vilifying yet another hopeful voice in the Presidency (first black, then female). "We the People" have collectively spoken and the TRUE FOUNDATION of America is now completely exposed, naked and out in the open. Although hidden by beautiful words and a high standard of living, America has NEVER been a country for ALL. Founded on the conquest and genocide of the native inhabitants, made prosperous by the unpaid forced labor of once free PEOPLE who were ruthlessly kidnaped and sold as property into brutal slavery and other people who were "Shanghaied" into indentured servitude to build the railroad system and with the best and most productive lands (states) stolen from Mexico by force. Now "we" even have the nerve to resent the people of Mexico for living in the land we stole from them and for even speaking their language. The United States of America has NEVER apologized, offered reparations or compensated for these atrocities and crimes against humanity in any way. On the contrary, the US has consistently and violently opposed the freedom and progress of these groups and many more. ALL progress by women, indigenous people, black, brown, yellow and other people of color has been hard fought against a system designed to keep them down and disempowered. Any progress has been tenuous at best. With the election of Donald Trump and all that he stands for, the true nature and foundation for power in the United States is now right out in the open for all to see in its naked, ugly truth. America has collectively and KNOWINGLY hand picked a despicable liar, cheat, fraud, ignorant, prejudiced, misogynistic, rapist, bigot swindler direct from the billionaire class! Perfect!!! No more hiding, "we" and he got what "we" asked for."

I hope he HATES living at the White House (such a comedown from Mar-a-Largo). I hope he chokes on the compromises he'll have to make. I hope EVERYONE who voted for him is actively embarrassed by his actions in office. I hope Melania is stressed out and overwhelmed by the pressures of her new position. I hope his followers FINALLY see that far from being an answer, Trump and his ideology are their greatest challenge to progress. Let's hope this puss will be enough to lance the American boil of worshiping money and power as God above all else. Then maybe, just maybe we can begin to heal as a country that truly stands for what it says...

AlieOxon Fri 11-Nov-16 15:29:26

Oregon, of course, didn't vote for Trump. I don't condone violence, but understand the anger.

Personally I hated the man from way before he started trying to be a politician.

POGS Fri 11-Nov-16 15:27:49

"We had our chance at a version of Proportional Representation but those of our Great British Public who bothered to vote in the referendum plumped for the status quo."

Another Democratic vote that took place and will never appease those who did not get the outcome THEY wanted.

I would think UKIP would prefer Proportional Representation for obvious reasons.

Remainders say the EU Referendum was only 'advisory' but there was no issue with either the Proportional Representation Referendum nor the Scottish Independence Referendum.

Had Clinton won the vote but Trump had more individual votes the subject wouldn't be raised and if it was the response would be tough Clinton won by a democratic process.

As for the riots it is The Game Keeper turned Poacher scenario. How can rioting, setting fire to things, criminal damage be seen as merely expressing upset or having the right to challenge the vote result?

I repeat for those who continue to twist my words I dislike practically everything Trump said, I dislike Clinton equally but my faith in people accepting a democratic vote is being shattered and I do fear that greatly.

Anniebach Fri 11-Nov-16 15:01:24

Anno he said and we all know he is a man of honesty , day 2 he will walk on water

Anya Fri 11-Nov-16 14:25:12

The man is obviously certifiable Anno - you're asking logical question of an illogical brain.

annodomini Fri 11-Nov-16 14:22:53

1. How do you build a 3000 mile wall in a day?
2. How does Trump make Mexico pay for the said wall?
3. And how does he even find all illegal immigrants, never mind deport them all on day one?

grizelda Fri 11-Nov-16 14:09:15

It is said that a country gets the government (or president) it deserves

Anniebach Fri 11-Nov-16 14:04:06

It was to be built on day one of his presidency, and all illegal immigrants would be out of the country , also on day one , he is fully booked for day one isn't he?

Ana Fri 11-Nov-16 13:57:18

Ha,ha! grin

Anniebach Fri 11-Nov-16 13:55:10

He said Mexico would have to pay for the wall, Mexico says - not paying

Ana Fri 11-Nov-16 13:50:58

Is he still going to build The Great Trump Wall?
