I think people are more racist and xenophobic than they generally admit because of the constraints of political correctness. It is a basic human trait to defend territory and look after your own tribe. Politicians ignore this at their peril.

I hoped it would be a Clinton victory, simply because I regarded her as the lesser of two evils, but I would echo the sentiments of a young American black woman interviewed on the BBC this morning, I didn't want either of them. Hillary Clinton came with a lot of distateful baggage and I can quite see why she wouldn't appeal to the disillusioned in parts of the depressed Mid West when amongst the many other questionables that surround her, she has been in receipt of large sums of money from Goldman Sachs for speeches, not to mention money mis appropriated from The Bill Clinton Foundation. The liberal elite, don't seem to get it and are so often the architects of their rejection by the very people they claim to represent. Quite honestly I find it very insulting, as one poster on here stated, America voters have now overtaken the British as the most stupid. This is such an over simplification, it just isn't that black and white. I think it's regrettable that these were the only two candidates that America had to make such a monumental choice with, but labling millions of people stupid is a gross over simplification and displays a very lofty, superior attitude.

I am not surprised by the vote after listening to the rants of an American friend about Obama and Clinton. I too am shocked by some people's attitude regarding Brexit and the US election. I am of the belief that we should not be thinking this is our Country but this is our World. We are multicultural, different colours etc but we are all Human. We should be looking after each other and protecting our World for our Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren. Lots of people do not seem to care for others anymore and that is terribly sad.

Not really saying that AB, I would have voted for Hillary, as I said the lesser of two evils, although I did hear that some from the Bernie Sanders camp were so anti Hillary they intended voting for Trump. Others stated they wouldn't consider voting for either of them, so those people cannot complain at this outcome. We all know that whoever runs in America has to have squillions to fund their campaign, so unfortunately that ruled out better candidates than the two they eventually ended up with. I find Trump repulsive on many levels, but he must be accepted as the overall winner. Whether he's what America deserves remains to be seen, lets hope some of his worst excesses are reigned in. In the meantime think the liberal elite everywhere must look to themselves as to why they don't resonate and are indeed reviled by great swathes of their electorate.

I agree, Trump seems like a disastrous choice for President but, rather like Bexit, it happned so now let us see what he can do. We heard a lot of big promises and very little about his plans to make them reality. Interesting times for sure.

Now we have to pick through all the hyperbole, viciousness of the campaign and try to find glimmers of light in some of his promises before the campaign turned into personal fight between the two of them.

Such as the promise to put the UK first in the queue for a trade deal, not last as Obama said.

Doesn't Corbyn believe that we should be rebuilding the infrastructure of the UK which is what Trump is promising for the USA?

There will be brakes on what he is able to do and some of his more ludicrous ideas will be quietly dropped.

I think that was Trump's appeal to many Americans - they felt that no-one cared about them and he told them that he did and promised them a brighter future.

I can't find an excellent link you posted prior to the US election but I believe after the EU referendum result . It too was insightful as to the psyche of voters.

It will be interesting to see if Brexit , the US elections will be a start of a wider global trend. We have the Italian Constitutional Referendum in December , the German Federal Election 2017, French Presidential Election April/May 2017.

As you so rightly said the liberal elite both here, America and Europe simply don't or won't understand that their are thousands of ordinary, and everyday, 'bog standard'(!!) people who feel totally and utterly disenfranchised by the same old political elite telling them how to vote, how to think and then calling them names and labelling them as stupid, ill educated, etc when they don't fall into line with their intellectual so called superiors. No liberal loveys, you're the arrogant ones, you're the blind ones, you're the ones who are unrealistic and completely out of touch, rather like aristocrats of long ago, and you're the ones who have caused Brexit and now Trump.

Americans rejected the monarchy many years ago! (although many of them are obsessed with the Royal Family).

Therefore perhaps the idea of yet another dynasty may be anathema to many of them; the Kennedys, the Bush family and the Clintons (I heard there were plans for Chelsea Clinton to be groomed for the Presidency after Hillary).
Hillary is a known quantity and many voters may have been very uneasy with her past history and links to the arms industry, as they were with Bill's sleaze.

It looks as though the liberal elite lost the confidence of more than one group of people. There are those who feel disadvantaged through poverty and those who may be comfortably off who also feel they are not being listened to.

Take my brother - comfortably off retired professional who is not a racist - he worked happily with and managed people from many ethnic minorities in his career. But he voted for leaving the EU because he lives in the south east and had worries about immigration as it impinged on his life. He felt that no-one was listening to his concerns or trying to address them, as the narrative around immigration keeps stumbling on allegations of racism. I am sure that there are many others like him who do not have a racist bone in their bodies, but have legitimate concerns about how immigration and refugees should be managed for the benefit of all.

He can have Katie for welfare, Farage for international relations and Sir Philip Green for finance.
